Описание: Literary Translation and the Making of Originals engages such issues as the politics and ethics of translation; how aesthetic categories and market forces contribute to the establishment and promotion of particular “originals”; and the role translation plays in the formation, re-formation, and deformation of national and international literary canons. By challenging the assumption that stable originals even exist, Karen Emmerich also calls into question the tropes of ideal equivalence and unavoidable loss that contribute to the low status of translation, translations, and translators in the current literary and academic marketplaces.

Автор: Brian James Baer Название: Translation and the Making of Modern Russian Literature ISBN: 1628927984 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781628927986 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 28500.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Brian James Baer explores the central role played by translation in the construction of modern Russian literature. Peter I’s policy of forced Westernization resulted in translation becoming a widely discussed and highly visible practice in Russia, a multi-lingual empire with a polyglot elite. Yet Russia’s accumulation of cultural capital through translation occurred at a time when the Romantic obsession with originality was marginalizing translation as mere imitation. The awareness on the part of Russian writers that their literature and, by extension, their cultural identity were born in translation produced a sustained and sophisticated critique of Romantic authorship and national identity that has long been obscured by the nationalist focus of traditional literary studies. Modeling the long overdue integration of translation into literary and cultural studies, Translation and the Making of Modern Russian Literature studies the circulation and reception of specific translated texts alongside re-readings of seminal works of the Russian literary canon.

Автор: Sherry Simon Название: Speaking Memory: How Translation Shapes City Life ISBN: 0773547886 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780773547889 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 104500.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: Speaking Memory evokes the complex "language-scapes" that form at the crossroads of culture and history in cities. While engaging with current debates on the nature and role of translation in globalized urban landscapes, the contributors offer a series of detailed and nuanced readings of “translational” cities – their histories, their construction and transformation in memory, and the artistic projects that tell their stories. The three sections of the book highlight historical case studies, conceptual issues, and text-based analyses of city scripts, in particular as they relate to creative literary practices and language interventions on the surface of the city itself. In this volume, translation points to the dissonance of city life, but also to the possibility of a generalized, public discourse – a space vital to urban citizenship, where the convergence of languages can be the source of new conversations. Essays cover a variety of topics and approaches, bringing new voices and insights to discussions on multilingualism and translation in the urban contexts of cities including Dublin, Montevideo, Montreal, Prague, and Vilnius. Defining cities as fields of translational forces where languages are both in conversation and in tension, translation in Speaking Memory is stretched beyond its usual confines, encompassing literary, artistic, and cultural practices that permeate everyday contemporary life. Contributors include Liamis Briedis (Vilnius University), Matteo Colombi (University of Leipzig), Michael Cronin (Dublin City University), Michael Darroch (Windsor University), Roch Duval (Université de Montréal), Andre Furlani (Concordia University), Simon Harel (Université de Montréal), William Marshall (Stirling University), Sarah Mekdjian (Université Paris III), Alexis Nouss (Université d’Aix en Provence), Katia Pizzi (University of London), Sherry Simon (Concordia University), Will Straw (McGill University), and Miriam Suchet (Université Paris III).

Exorcising Translation, a new volume in Bloomsbury's Literatures, Cultures, Translation series, makes critical contributions to translation as well as to comparative and postcolonial literary studies.
The hot-button issue of Eurocentrism in translation studies has roiled the discipline in the past few years, with critiques followed by defenses and defenses followed by enhanced critiques. Douglas Robinson identifies Eurocentrism in translation studies as what Sakai Naoki calls a "civilizational spell." Exorcising Translation tracks two translation histories. In the first, moving from Friedrich Nietzsche to Harold Bloom, we find ourselves caught, trapped, cursed, haunted by the spell. In the second, focused on English translations and translators of Chinese literature, Robinson explores accusations against American translators not only for their inadequate (or even totally absent) knowledge of Chinese and Daoism, but for their Americanness, their trappedness in individualistic and secular Western thought. A closer look at that history shows that Western thought and Chinese thought are mutually shaped in fascinating ways. Exorcising Translation presents a major re-envisioning of translation studies, and indeed the literary relationship between East and West, by a pioneering scholar in the field.

Автор: Jane Hiddleston Название: Writing After Postcolonialism: Francophone North African Literature in Transition ISBN: 1350022799 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781350022799 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 126720.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: ‘Focusing on francophone writing from North Africa as it has developed since the 1980s, Writing After Postcolonialism explores the extent to which the notion of ‘postcolonialism’ is still resonant for literary writers a generation or more after independence, and examines the troubled status of literature in society and politics during this period. Whilst analysing the ways in which writers from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia have reacted to political unrest and social dissatisfaction, Jane Hiddleston offers a compelling reflection on literature’s ability to interrogate the postcolonial nation as well as on its own uncertain role in the current context. The book sets out both to situate the recent generation of francophone writers in North Africa in relation to contemporary politics, to postcolonial theory, and evolving notions of ‘world literature, and to probe the ways in which a new and highly sophisticated set of writers reflect on the very notion of ‘the literary’ during this period of transition.’
Автор: Longino Название: French Travel Writing in the Ottoman Empire ISBN: 1138822655 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781138822658 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 163330.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Examining the history of the French experience of the Ottoman world and Turkey, this comparative study visits the accounts of early modern travelers for the insights they bring to the field of travel writing. The journals of contemporaries Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Jean Thevenot, Laurent D’Arvieux, Guillaume-Joseph Grelot, Jean Chardin, and Antoine Galland reveal a rich corpus of political, social, and cultural elements relating to the Ottoman Empire at the time, enabling an appreciation of the diverse shapes that travel narratives can take at a distinct historical juncture. Longino examines how these writers construct themselves as authors, characters, and individuals in keeping with the central human project of individuation in the early modern era, also marking the differences that define each of these travelers – the shopper, the envoy, the voyeur, the arriviste, the ethnographer, the merchant. She shows how these narratives complicate and alter political and cultural paradigms in the fields of Mediterranean studies, 17th-century French studies, and cultural studies, arguing for their importance in the canon of early modern narrative forms, and specifically travel writing. The first study to examine these travel journals and writers together, this book will be of interest to a range of scholars covering travel writing, French literature, and history.
Автор: Alba, Sonia Название: Tunisian womens writing in french ISBN: 1845199391 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781845199395 Издательство: Gazelle Book Services Рейтинг: Цена: 135850.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Tunisian womens literary production in French, published or set between the years 1987 and 2011 from Tunisias second president Zine El Abidine Ben Alis rise to power to the eve of the Tunisian Revolution reveals the role of women, their political engagement, and their resistance to patriarchal oppression. A great deal of media and scholarly attention has focused on the role of women during the Tunisian Revolution itself, yet few studies have considered womens literary and active engagement prior to the uprising. By contrast, this book focuses specifically on the time period leading to the Revolution. The book is structured around three chapters, each focusing on a different form of writing and on a number of contemporary Tunisian writers who have chosen to express themselves in French. Sonia Alba explores the complex ways in which the authors have attempted to deal with those issues cultural, social and political most relevant to them. This is the first study of Tunisian womens writing in French to compare and contrast key themes in three different genres within a single study and within the conceptual framework of subaltern counterpublics. The work is enhanced by the inclusion of extracts from previously unpublished authors interviews. Tunisian Womens Writing in French is essential reading for all Francophone and Postcolonial scholars, and for scholars and students working in Contemporary Womens Writing.
