Описание:

Students are reading on screens more than ever—how can we teach them to be better digital readers?

Smartphones, laptops, tablets: college students are reading on-screen all the time, and digital devices shape students’ understanding of and experiences with reading. In higher education, however, teachers rarely consider how digital reading experiences may have an impact on learning abilities, unless they’re lamenting students’ attention spans or the distractions available to students when they’re learning online.

Skim, Dive, Surface offers a corrective to these conversations—an invitation to focus not on losses to student learning but on the spectrum of affordances available within digital learning environments. It is designed to help college instructors across the curriculum teach digital reading in their classes, whether they teach face-to-face, fully online, or somewhere in between. Placing research from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, learning science, and composition in dialogue with insight from the scholarship of teaching and learning, Jenae Cohn shows how teachers can better frame, scaffold, and implement effective digital reading assignments. She positions digital reading as part of a cluster of literacies that students should develop in order to communicate effectively in a digital environment.

Описание:

The progress of ubiquitous information technologies has led to the arrival of entirely new environments where interaction amongst its users takes place. The means of communication, learning environments and methods of enhancing students’ competence have changed in both academic and professional settings. The book aims to investigate if the implementation of a virtual learning environment into regular foreign language instruction, as an augmentation of the regular classroom practice, has an impact on adult learners’ speaking (productive skills), listening (receptive skills) and grammatical competence. However, what was meant as a localised study became the new normal and a global reality as the coronavirus impacted all aspects of education.

Описание:

Adults' literacy is a topic of great interest to multiple audiences and scholarly fields but research into it is fragmented across disparate disciplines and hence lacks coherence. In particular, an impasse exists between cognitive science researchers and economists on the one hand, and critical theorists writing in the social practice tradition. This book acknowledges the importance of these fields, then builds on them and on other scholarly traditions by locating its discussion of literacy and orality within a media ecology framework. Based on in-depth interviews within successive literacy research projects in industry and community settings with trade apprentices, their supervisors and managers, industry training coordinators, literacy tutors, and adults of liminal (threshold) literacy, this book reveals the importance of oral-experiential ways of learning, knowing and communicating that exist in complex relationships with literate practices. The tradition of media ecology as exemplified in the writings of Walter Ong, Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan, Michel de Certeau, Eric Havelock and a collection of contemporary scholars, provides new insights into literacy and orality. The book in exploring the everyday workplace and community environments of adults with liminal literacy demonstrates how a media ecology perspective allows adult literacy and orality to be reimagined within a deeper and more holistic way than possible within disconnected disciplinary areas.

Описание: Choosing the right technologies to match student learning outcomes in today's technology-integrated classrooms presents educators and instructional designers with multiple curricula and instructional design challenges including selecting appropriate technologies to match desired student learning outcomes. As students continue to have broad access to information from a variety of web-based platforms, educators and educational professionals are increasingly tasked with ensuring the information used to complete key assignments or tasks is authentic and from a verifiable resource. As such, the era of deep fakes in images, audios, videos, and digital texts is more prevalent than ever as numerous programs using artificial intelligence (AI) can significantly alter original content to fundamentally change the intent of original content. Moreover, students are being bombarded by a plethora of information that is either intentionally or mistakenly false and must be navigated with care. Accordingly, educators and educational professionals are now tasked with employing best practices to not only teach basic digital literacy and citizenship skills but also to recognize how technology-immersed learning environments interact with deep fakes and misinformation while equipping students with the tools necessary to recognize authentic and altered content.

The Handbook of Research on Deep Fakes, Fake News, and Misinformation in Online Teaching and Learning Technologies is a critical reference source that addresses rising concerns of students' ability to navigate the multitude of false and altered information and content that is easily accessible through online platforms. The chapters go into deeper detail about how deep fakes, fake news, and mis- and dis-information have the potential of negatively affecting the fields of teaching and learning and the importance of student access to content-related tasks from legitimate, vetted resources that accurately reflect the desired information the student means to convey. The book seeks to reinforce the importance of digital literacy and digital citizenship among adolescents. This book is essential for teaching faculty, higher education faculty, higher education administrators, educational software developers, security specialists, information specialists, media specialists, librarians, educational researchers, and students looking for information on how deep fakes and fake news are being navigated within the context of online teaching and educational technologies.
