Описание: In an ever-changing global environment, under the pressure of climate change and the movement of people and goods over long distances, the emergence of animal diseases in previously unaffected areas is no longer an exceptional event. Lumpy Skin Disease is an example: it entered continental Europe for the first time in 2015, turning into a regional crisis involving many countries in the Balkan Peninsula in less than a year. This special EMPRES issue looks at its epidemiology and diagnostics, and presents a range of approaches for controlling the disease.

Описание: The farming of animals for meat and milk confronts a stark dilemma. While world demand from a growing and more affluent human population is increasing rapidly, there are strong counter-arguments that we should eat less meat and pay more attention to environmental protection, animal welfare and human health and well-being. The aim of this book is to identify and explain the causes and contributors to current problems in animal husbandry, especially those related to 'factory farming', and advance arguments that may contribute to its successful re-orientation. Husbandry is considered in its broadest sense, namely the productive and sustainable use of the land for the good of all (plants, humans and other animals). The first part of the book outlines principles and arguments necessary to engage with current problems: depletion of natural resources and destruction of environment, animal welfare, food and health, fair trade and sharing resources. These arguments are illustrated by examples and sufficient evidence to justify the argument without obscuring the message. The second part presents a series of constructive proposals for change and development in animal husbandry, both in the developed world and subsistence agriculture. These include more integrated crop and livestock farming systems, the ethics of animal welfare and environmental management, and the evolution of a new social contract whereby the rights of the people to a fair share of good, safe food and a green and pleasant land are matched by a shared responsibility to preserve these things.

What constitutes animal welfare? With animals being used for companionship, service, research, food, fiber, and by-products, animal welfare is a topic of great interest and importance to society. As the world's population continues to increase, a major challenge for society is the maintenance of a strong and viable food system, which is linked to the well-being and comfort of food animals. Animal Welfare in Animal Agriculture: Husbandry, Stewardship, and Sustainability in Animal Production explores the pressing issue of farm animal welfare in animal production systems in the United States and globally.
A framework for open discussion on animal welfare, this multidisciplinary book brings together the perspectives of 40 highly qualified and recognized experts in their respective fields. Fourteen chapters address a range of topics that includes ethics, sociology, food safety, ecology, feed resources, biotechnology, government regulations, and sustainability, as well as animal comfort, health, and contributions to society. The book also offers a historical perspective on the growth of animal agriculture from family farms to industrial animal agriculture--and the impact this has had on society. Illustrating the diversity of viewpoints, the concept of animal welfare is defined from the perspectives of an ethicist and philosopher, a research scientist, a veterinarian, an industrialist, and an activist, as well as from the perspective of sustainability and product quality.
Written primarily for students, but also highly relevant for professionals in varying fields of academia and industry, this timely book reveals important insights into animal welfare and animal agriculture. Unique in its depth, breadth, and balance, it underscores the need for dialogue on wide-ranging and often contentious issues related to animal production systems.

Описание: The agricultural activities are often based on individual producers decisions and on their attitudes, knowledge and level of technology. It is however also based on political and economic considerations, attitudes and opinions from the society. Thus, continuously updated scientifically based knowledge, both from an environmental, social and economic view, need to be disseminated and applied with a much increased ambition. Technological facts may be well known, but still strong social and economic reasons and pressure from outside to make short term profits hinders the appropriate application of relevant measures. This is the reason why we have all parts of the sustainability concept covered in our texts: the ecological, the social, the economical, and the institutional/juridical. "Sustainable agriculture" has become a popular way of expressing that what society wants is an environmentally sound, productive, economically viable, and socially desirable agriculture.

Описание: Archaeological evidence suggests that the bird commonly known as the chicken (Gallus domesticus) is a domesticated version of the Indian and Southeast Asian Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) which is still found in the wild today. It is thought that the bird was first tamed in China around 6000 BC, with the birds moving into India by 2000 B.C. The chicken then spread from China to Russia and from there into Europe between 750 B.C. 42 A.D. Some scholars believe that the bird may have been domesticated first for its use in cockfighting, and only later used as a food source. The White Leghorn breed or crosses of this breed is the large white bird most commonly used in agriculture and for research, but there are over 400 different breeds of chickens. Chickens have a rigid social structure called the "pecking order" by which every bird establishes who is dominant and who is submissive in relationship to every other bird.

Описание: Quality of feed nutrition is influenced not only by the content but also by some other aspects such as, feed presentation, hygiene, anti-nutritional factors, digestibility and palatability. Feed additives provide a mechanism by which such dietary deficiencies can be addressed and also benefits not only associated with the nutrition and thus the growth rate of the animal concerned, but also its health and welfare. Feed additives could modify animal metabolism in specific and direct ways by improving production efficiency (weight gain or milk yield); improving carcass composition in growing animals; increasing milk yield in lactating animals; and decreasing animal waste per production unit. This book discusses the impacts of feed additives on animal metabolism, health and production.

Описание: These guidelines propose a harmonized international approach to assessing the environmental performance of feed additives in livestock supply chains, taking into consideration their impact all along the supply chain for large ruminants, pigs and poultry.
Many categories of feed additives exist worldwide. Manufactured by a wide range of sectors, feed additives target different livestock species to pursue different objectives, ranging from improving nutrition and animal health to curbing emissions and preventing pollution. Research is active in this field and a growing number of additives are being developed and marketed.
Feed additives carry both environmental burdens linked to their production and environmental benefits linked to their usage, yet environmental assessments have often failed to address this complexity. These guidelines strive for a more coherent inclusion of feed additives in environmental assessments of livestock production, in order to increase the understanding of their environmental impact and reveal possible synergies or trade-offs with other environmental criteria.

Описание: Prospects for Livestock-Based Livelihoods in Africa's Drylands examines the challenges and opportunities facing the livestock sector and the people who depend on livestock in the dryland regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. It presents a novel way of thinking about pastoral development, grounded in a conceptual framework that focuses on the multiple shocks that drylands livestock keepers face and how those shocks can be addressed, drawing on a state-of-the-art literature review carried out by scientists of leading research institutes and development organizations, and integrating the results of an innovative approach to modeling development options for the drylands livestock sector. Looking to the future, the picture is mixed. On the positive side, demand for red meat is expected to strengthen in domestic and regional markets, suggesting that livestock keepers will have good market opportunities. On the negative side, a large majority of livestock keepers are classifi ed as poor, and the natural (feed) resource base is likely to be suffi cient to enable improved meat and milk production for the growing human population. Prospects for the livestock sector through 2030 vary by aridity zone. In arid and semi-arid zones, a reasonable goal for 2030 is to have land use, training, and microfi nance systems established that promote an appropriate balance between human and livestock carrying capacities, featuring mainly grassland/pastoral systems that reliably and sustainably satisfy the minimum income needs of herder households, produce at least a signifi cant part of the demand in local markets for animal source food, and provide environmental services for which livestock keepers receive compensation. The goal includes signifi cant employment generation outside the sector. In the higher rainfall zones of the semi-arid areas, and in the subhumid zones, a reasonable goal for 2030 is to have intensifi ed production systems established, featuring mainly mixed livestock/arable farming or agro-pastoral systems that are closely linked to nearby grassland/pastoral systems and that consistently generate marketable surpluses of differentiated red meat and livestock products that can compete not only in the expanding domestic market but also in selected regional markets.

Автор: Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Название: Livestock Activity Data Guidance (L-ADG): Methods and guidance on compilation of activity data for Tier 2 livestock GHG inventories ISBN: 9251321175 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789251321171 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 54510.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: The purpose of the Livestock Activity Data Guidance (L-ADG) is to improve the accuracy of livestock emission estimates in national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and enable countries to measure and report progress towards their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Livestock emissions – including enteric fermentation, manure management and emissions from dung and urine deposited on pasture – account for about 11 percent of global GHG emissions.
A recent review found that among 140 developing countries, 92 have included livestock-related emissions in their NDCs. However, very few have national GHG inventories that are able to track changes in livestock emissions resulting from mitigation policies and measures, which requires a Tier 2 approach as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This occurs because a lack of activity data and incomplete or poor-quality data hamper the use of the Tier 2 approach.
The L-ADG focuses on estimating activity data from the main ruminant types found in developing countries - cattle, sheep and goats - and provides guidance on how to: identify and assess the availability and quality of existing activity data; structure a Tier 2 inventory to make use of available data; compile activity data when data exists but is incomplete or of insufficient quality; estimate activity data when data is missing; and assess the quality of data and identify priorities for continuous improvement.

Описание: Pigs are everywhere in United States history. They cleared frontiers and built cities (notably Cincinnati, once known as Porkopolis), served as an early form of welfare, and were at the center of two nineteenth-century “pig wars.” American pork fed the hemisphere; lard literally greased the wheels of capitalism.J. L. Anderson has written an ambitious history of pigs and pig products from the Columbian exchange to the present, emphasizing critical stories of production, consumption, and waste in American history. He examines different cultural assumptions about pigs to provide a window into the nation’s regional, racial, and class fault lines, and maps where pigs are (and are not) to reveal a deep history of the American landscape. A contribution to American history, food studies, agricultural history, and animal studies, Capitalist Pigs is an accessible, deeply researched, and often surprising portrait of one of the planet’s most consequential interspecies relationships.
