Today’s colleges and universities are facing mounting criticism from both internal and external interest groups and constituencies. While strident calls for reform accelerate, resources for higher education have weakened. Thus, demands to improve college education abound amidst hard times. This timely book, Making College Better: Views from the Top, offers more rational and practical responses to that public outcry by allowing college presidents and chancellors from a wide variety of postsecondary institutions the opportunity to address, in measured ways, many complex issues and how they might be untangled. Moreover, these academic leaders provide possible remedies to make college better through more strategic policies and practices.
Making College Better will appeal to all those interested in the future of higher education, including students, college administrators and other higher education personnel, parents, legislators and other officials, and public and private sector leaders. It is especially useful for courses in the organization and administration of higher education, the college presidency, contemporary issues in higher education, foundations of higher education, higher education and society, and college student development.

Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students
Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions.
The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students.
Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process.
While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.

Описание: Presents a collection of chapters that cover a wide range of evidence-based approaches designed to enhance the practices of those who work closely with college athletes. The aim of the text is to spark conversation about how college and university constituents can reframe their thinking about the importance of innovative research to careful, informed practice.
Community College Leadership and Management places emphasis on reframing college practices in order to advance student success. This calls for leaders to be well versed on promising strategies which have illustrated evidence in advancing academic success. Such practices include intrusive academic advising, exit interviews with dropouts and graduates, and the use of technology to supplement face-to-face academic counselor advising. These leaders are aware of and welcome the challenges and opportunities a changing student population presents to community colleges. The authors critically analyze and call for a deconstruction of conventional practices and the construction of new approaches to understand how student success is envisioned. For example, a redefinition of what constitutes student success is advanced. A redefinition of student success—as the attainment of an academic, vocational, career, or personal goal—is put forth. This broader perception, definition, and meaning of student success is not limited to or constrained by an accountability paradigm. It is driven by the need to capture a more complete picture of the trajectory of contemporary and traditional enrollees from increasingly diverse backgrounds: students whose goals do not fit solely and neatly into two traditionally dominant outcomes like graduation and transfer. It is the role of community college leaders to affirm, inculcate, and communicate this more nuanced definition, allowing it to guide the vision and mission, programs, policies, and practices of the institution. Carlos Nevarez and Luke J. Wood support their arguments through various models, frameworks, research findings, case studies, and presentation of self-reflective questions aimed at advancing reflective community college scholar-practitioners.
Why do so many capable high schoolers fail to earn coveted college acceptances and scholarships? Why are a lot of competent teenagers not prepared for the transition to college level work? The answer is simple: most students (and their families ) do not realize that they must carefully plan from the beginning of ninth grade in order to attain an impressive profile for their college applications, and have no idea what colleges are searching for in a candidate until it is too late. This detailed, practical, and uniquely structured book provides an effective & proven roadmap for fostering college readiness with a comprehensive, step-by-step timeline to follow throughout each year of high school.
Geary Woolfolk has navigated his family through the college admissions & scholarship process several times with overwhelming success, and shares the "secrets" to his sons' academic achievements through knowledgeable insight and with an amiable and collegial style. Based on in-depth research and his own experience with guiding his children and teenagers in his community, Geary reveals his approach to creating a highly competitive college profile from the perspective of a family who has been there before. In these pages, you will discover:
- How to plan and track your progress from the beginning of high school through becoming a freshman in college
- How to develop essential skill sets that enable you to thrive in high school and truly become "college-ready"
- How to identify your best-fit colleges and enter into a strong position to earn admission to dream schools
- How to greatly improve your chances of earning top scholarships
- How to plan and organize during the college application season.
- How to transition into "college mode" and be ready for success immediately upon graduating from high school
This well organized and thorough guide will provide students and parents with concrete strategies for identifying what colleges are looking for in an applicant, developing a resum to meet these expectations, and vigilantly planning each year of high school to achieve key acceptances, earn valuable scholarships, and ensure college readiness.
