Описание: The recording studio is a performance setting in which popular music performers often produce multiple takes, using particular strategies to vary outcomes in search of the 'perfect take'. However, repetition offers the opportunity to discover the unexplored liminality between what we expect to hear and what is performed. Observing multiple takes of one's own recorded performance within the temporal limits of a vocal recording session yields qualitative data to create an ethnography of both the process and the Work itself. Presenting artefacts from a recording session in conjunction with an autoethnographic text provides a demonstration of how evolving external cues, and internal cognitive scripts interact with technology and social conventions in the recording studio to impact a popular music musician's performance and, in effect, the creation of a new Work.

Автор: Sam Cleeve Название: Live from the Other Side of Nowhere: Contemplating Musical Performance in an Age of Virtual Reality ISBN: 1501346350 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501346354 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Цена: 76030.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: In recent years VR has become an increasingly prevalent platform for musical performance—Bjork, U2, Gorillaz, and even the LA Philharmonic all having taken to the virtual stage. These virtual encounters profoundly disrupt assumptions long held to be true of live music, undermining the necessity of physical and temporal co-presence, exploding our expectations of performance spaces, opening up new possibilities for performance involving avatars, and affording intimate encounters otherwise impossible in the physical world.
Proceeding through a series of case studies and analyses, and drawing in equal parts on the findings of musicology, performance, film, and media and cultural studies, Live from the Other Side of Nowhere begins to pry apart the conceptual challenges that this disruptive technology poses to our understanding of the "live" as an autonomous category of musical activity.

Between 1895 and 1920, the United States saw a sharp increase in commercial sound recording, the first mass medium of home entertainment. As companies sought to discover what kinds of records would appeal to consumers, they turned to performance forms already familiar to contemporary audiences—sales pitches, oratory, sermons, and stories. In A Most Valuable Medium, Richard Bauman explores the practical problems that producers and performers confronted when adapting familiar oral genres to this innovative medium of sound recording. He also examines how audiences responded to these modified and commoditized presentations. Featuring audio examples throughout and offering a novel look at the early history of sound recording, A Most Valuable Medium reveals how this new technology effected monumental change in the ways we receive information.
