By turns contemplative and playful, gentle and impassioned, Tagore's letters abound in incredible insights-from sharply comical portrayals of English sahibs to lively anecdotes about family life, from thoughts on the nature of poetry to spiritual contemplation and inner feeling. And coursing through all these letters, like a ceaseless heartbeat, is Tagore's deep love for the natural splendour of Bengal.
In this manner, this volume also serves as a prose companion to his magnificent work Gitanjali.Letters from a Young Poet shimmers with wit and warmth, and offers unforgettable vignettes of the young poet in those happy days before extraordinary fame found him.
Tagore's Gitanjali(Song Offerings) was first published from Shantiniketan in West Bengal, India in 1912 in Bengali. It contained 157 songs. Later on the English translation, by Tagore himself, of the Bengali book with the same name, with an introduction by W.B. Yeats, was published from India Society, London on 1st Nov 1912. The book contained 103 songs out of which 53 were taken from the Bengali version. Gitanjali in English earned Tagore The Nobel Prize in 1913.

Описание: Representations of women in Indian cinema are often warped and twisted. They are subjected to a series of gazes - voyeuristic, investigative and titillating. The controlling look is always with the male. One film-maker who consistently steered clear of this right through his career was Satyajit Ray. None of Ray's women on celluloid can be reduced to a cliche. They defy every imaginable stereotyping. This is particularly true of the women in his adaptations of Tagore's stories. Woman at the Window attempts a completely new way of looking at Ray's films in general, and his films adapted from Tagore in particular, through contextualizing the women by objects they are surrounded by or are fond of, or are habituated to using or learning to use over time. What emerges is a one-of-its-kind book, indeed the first comprehensive study of this kind on the cinema of Ray which offers a greater understanding of the differences, or the absence thereof, between Tagore's original stories and Ray's celluloid readings of these stories, as also fascinating material for gender studies students, researchers, academics and scholars writing on cinema.

The King of the Dark Chamber (1918) is a play by Rabindranath Tagore. Translated into English by Tagore after he received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, The King of the Dark Chamber is a symbolic drama exploring themes of faith, power, citizenship, and love. Part meditation on human government, part reflection on humanity's connection to god, Tagore's play is a masterpiece of Indian literature. "My faith is, to go on obeying the King-it does not matter whether he is a real one or a pretender. What do we know of Kings that we should judge them! It is like throwing stones in the dark-you are almost sure of hitting your mark. I go on obeying and acknowledging-if it is a real King, well and good: if not, what harm is there?" What is the nature of kingship? If a nation is prosperous, and its people happy, should they question their ruler? Such questions abound in The King of the Dark Chamber, a symbolic story of a King who rules through absence alone. While he is more widely known as a poet, Tagore was also a gifted playwright who used the stage to explore timeless, universal themes. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Rabindranath Tagore's The King of the Dark Chamber is a classic of Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.

EXCERPT: "Everything has sprung from immortal life and is vibrating with life, for life is immense.
This is the noble heritage from our forefathers waiting to be claimed by us as our own, this ideal of the supreme freedom of consciousness. It is not merely intellectual or emotional, it has an ethical basis, and it must be translated into action. In the Upanishad it is said, The supreme being is all-pervading, therefore he is the innate good in all. To be truly united in knowledge, love, and service with all beings, and thus to realise one's self in the all-pervading God is the essence of goodness, and this is the keynote of the teachings of the Upanishads: Life is immense "
