Exorcising Translation, a new volume in Bloomsbury's Literatures, Cultures, Translation series, makes critical contributions to translation as well as to comparative and postcolonial literary studies.
The hot-button issue of Eurocentrism in translation studies has roiled the discipline in the past few years, with critiques followed by defenses and defenses followed by enhanced critiques. Douglas Robinson identifies Eurocentrism in translation studies as what Sakai Naoki calls a "civilizational spell.+? Exorcising Translation tracks two translation histories. In the first, moving from Friedrich Nietzsche to Harold Bloom, we find ourselves caught, trapped, cursed, haunted by the spell. In the second, focused on English translations and translators of Chinese literature, Robinson explores accusations against American translators not only for their inadequate (or even totally absent) knowledge of Chinese and Daoism, but for their Americanness, their trappedness in individualistic and secular Western thought. A closer look at that history shows that Western thought and Chindese thought are mutually shaped in fascinating ways. Exorcising Translation presents a major re-envisioning of translation studies, and indeed the literary relationship between East and West, by a pioneering scholar in the field.

Описание: Florida often seems not quite southern - yet it suffered more lynching than any of its Deep South neighbors when examined in proportion to the number of African American residents.Investigating this dark era of the state’s history and focusing on a string of brutal lynchings that took place during the 1940s, Tameka Hobbs explores the reasons why lynchings continued in Florida when they were starting to wane elsewhere. She contextualizes the murders within the era of World War II, contrasting the desire of the United States to broadcast the benefits of its democracy abroad while at home it struggled to provide legal protection to its African American citizens. As involvement in the global war deepened and rhetoric against Axis powers heightened, the nation’s leaders became increasingly aware of the blemish left by extralegal violence on America’s reputation. Ultimately, Hobbs argues, the international implications of these four murders, along with other antiblack violence around the nation, increased pressure not only on public officials in Florida to protect the civil rights of African Americans in the state but also on the federal government to become more active in prosecuting racial violence.

Описание: Lynching is often viewed as a narrow form of violence: either the spontaneous act of an angry mob against accused individuals, or a demonstration of white supremacy against an entire population considered subhuman. However, in this new treatise, historian Guy Lancaster exposes the multiple forms of violence hidden beneath the singular label of lynching.Lancaster, who has written extensively on racial violence, details several lynchings of Blacks by white posses in post-Reconstruction Arkansas. Drawing from the fields of history, philosophy, cognitive science, sociology, and literary theory, and quoting chilling contemporary accounts, he argues that the act of lynching encompasses five distinct but overlapping types of violence. This new framework reveals lynching to be even more of an atrocity than previously understood: that mobs did not disregard the humanity of their victims but rather reveled in it; that they were not simply enacting personal vengeance but manifesting an elite project of subjugation. Lancaster thus clarifies and connects the motives and goals of seemingly isolated lynch mobs, embedding the practice in the ongoing enforcement of white supremacy. By interrogating the substance of lynching, American Atrocity shines new light on both past anti-Black violence and the historical underpinnings of our present moment.

Описание: LYNCHING BARACK OBAMA How Whites Tried to String Up the President Molefi Kete Asante Asante, the author of African Pyramids of Knowledge, argues that the infamous historical acts of lynching black men in the United States might be used to describe how many people of the white Right Wing have used various techniques to "string up" presidential objectives. Barack Obama as the first black President of the United States met immediate resistance from a white majority that voted for his opponent in 2008. This was repeated in 2012. Thus, both John McCain and Mitt Romney received a majority of white votes in the two elections yet Obama won the elections. Asante contends that whites felt that they had lost "their" country and the only way to act was to prevent Barack Obama from asserting himself as a black man. Asante shows in a compelling manner, by choosing many of the attacks on Obama found in the media, that the President was tied up, roped, and hung out to dry by the white Republican Right. Nevertheless, as Asante explains Barack Obama championed some of the most progressive actions ever addressed by a president. He was unwilling to be cowed by the aggression of the frightened, fickle, and fearful virtual mob that wanted to "take their country back" from the President who was not one of them. "Asante's work reveals a profoundly reflective intellectual engaged in a balanced and authoritative analysis of the serious assaults on the personal and administration of the first black President of the United States. His metaphor is apt and well-placed in the analysis." ---Ama Mazama, co-editor, Journal of Black Studies. In this deeply researched prequel to his 2006 study Rough Justice: Lynching and American Society, 1874–1947, Michael J. Pfeifer analyzes the foundations of lynching in American social history. Scrutinizing the vigilante movements and lynching violence that occurred in the middle decades of the nineteenth century on the Southern, Midwestern, and far Western frontiers, The Roots of Rough Justice: Origins of American Lynching offers new insights into collective violence in the pre-Civil War era.
Pfeifer examines the antecedents of American lynching in an early modern Anglo-European folk and legal heritage. He addresses the transformation of ideas and practices of social ordering, law, and collective violence in the American colonies, the early American Republic, and especially the decades before and immediately after the American Civil War. His trenchant and concise analysis anchors the first book to consider the crucial emergence of the practice of lynching of slaves in antebellum America. Pfeifer also leads the way in analyzing the history of American lynching in a global context, from the early modern British Atlantic to the legal status of collective violence in contemporary Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa.
Seamlessly melding source material with apt historical examples, The Roots of Rough Justice tackles the emergence of not only the rhetoric surrounding lynching, but its practice and ideology. Arguing that the origins of lynching cannot be restricted to any particular region, Pfeifer shows how the national and transatlantic context is essential for understanding how whites used mob violence to enforce the racial and class hierarchies across the United States.

This work seeks to explain how a culture of violence that nourished this practice could form and endure for so long among ordinary people.

Ashraf H. A. Rushday looks at three lynchings over the course of the twentieth century to see how Americans developed two distinct ways of thinking and talking about this act before and after the 1930s.
