Описание: The selected readings in Introduction to Criminal Justice: Structure, Process, Principles, and Morality thoughtfully examine the major functions of the criminal justice system and considers some relevant ethical implications. By including ethics, morality, and social justice as foundational concepts, this book serves to provide a sensitive and realistic view of the system to students newly introduced to the criminal justice discipline.Chapter One reviews the broad scope of the justice system, while Chapter Two provides a succinct overview of major criminological theories. In Chapters Three and Five readers learn the fundamentals of criminal law and the courts and Chapter Four considers the dynamic process of becoming a law enforcement officer and the challenges in policing. Chapters Six and Seven deal with the critical areas of community and institutional corrections. Chapter Eight examines offender reentry and Chapter Nine explores counterproductive governance policies that create criminogenic conditions. The final chapter considers the future of criminal justice and questions the readiness of the system to respond effectively to it.The contributing academics and researchers are experts in their respective fields and many have practitioner experience. Introduction to Criminal Justice moves beyond the basics of the discipline to consider the real consequences and ethical implications of the criminal justice system, making the anthology an ideal text for introductory courses.

Описание: Young people who come into contact with police officers on the streets today have little idea of the significance of the stabbing to death of Stephen Lawrence in a racist attack in 1993. Only their parents or grandparents remember the daily exposures of police incompetence and indirect racism which were given high profile in the media for six months. The repercussions of the case are still ongoing with the long overdue conviction in 2012 of two of the original suspects, and in the same year a number of racist assaults by police. This accessible and engaging book includes analysis of hitherto inaccessible transcripts. These dramatically show how the Inquiry was undermined to the point of failure to produce the desired results. Dr Stone also discusses contemporary issues and the relevance of the Inquiry today. This paperback edition is updated with a new Afterword, including revelations about police surveillance on members of the public who attended the Lawrence Inquiry, Dr Stone’s meeting with Mark Ellison QC prior to the release of his report on possible corruption and the role of undercover policing in the Stephen Lawrence case, and proposals for action on implementation of the agenda set by the Lawrence Inquiry. Hard-hitting and full of insightful detail, this book makes essential reading for academics, students, researchers and anyone interested in institutional racism, particularly in the police.

Описание:

This book offers a distinctive and novel approach to state-sponsored violence, one of the major problems facing humanity in the previous and now the twenty-first century. It addresses the question: how is it possible that large numbers of ordinary men and women are able to do the killing, torturing and violence that defines crimes against humanity? In his striking analysis, Rob Watts shows how and why states, of all political persuasions, engage in crimes against humanity, including: genocide, homicide, torture, kidnapping, illegal surveillance and detention.
This book advances a new interpretive frame. It argues against the ‘civilizing process’ model, showing how both states and social sciences like sociology and criminology have been complicit in splitting 'the social' from 'the ethical' while accepting too complacently that modern states are the exemplars of morality and rationality. The book makes the case that it is possible to bring together in the one interpretative frame, our understanding of social action involving personal motivation and ethical responsibility and patterns of collective social action operating in terms of the agencies of ‘the State’. Rob Watts identifies and charts the pathways of action and ‘practical’ (i.e. ethical) judgements which the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity constructed for themselves to make sense of what they were doing.
At once challenging and highly accessible, the book reveals the policy-making processes that produce state crime as well as showing how ordinary people do the state’s dirty work.
