Описание: Readers interested in the psychology of non-Western peoples will find this volume provocative in both descriptive and theoretical detail. The first book-length study of Siamese psychological life, it describes the members of an Asian peasant community whose dominant personality traits are aimed at the maintenance of their individuality, privacy, and sense of self-regard. In addition, it offers suggestions for handling many of the theoretical and technical problems crucial to cross-cultural personality research. Basing his research on two years of fieldwork in the Central Plain community of Bang Chan, Mr. Phillips offers a systematic analysis and comparison of two kinds of data: observations of the villagers' overt behavior in workaday social encounters, and their subjective responses to a special psychological test. Many readers will find particular value in his discussion of the design, translation, and implementation of psychological research methods in non-Western cultures. The author analyzes the central role of affability and play in the villagers' daily contacts, the use of politeness as a "social cosmetic," and the implications of this cosmetic for the inner lives of the Thai. He examines the villagers' readiness to become involved with others in the first place, and the sense of linkage that ties them together over time. He demonstrates how the individualistic tendencies of the Thai intrude on the stability of interpersonal relationships and how in the village of Bang Chan all social interaction is set within a framework of cosmic unpredictability, with human volition only one of the several indeterminate and uncontrollable factors in life. This "loosely structured" system of social relationships is seen to have its roots in early childhood, with strong support from both Hinayana Buddhist doctrine and the sociologically simple and undifferentiated nature of Bang Chan society. In presenting the psychological test results, the author examines the villagers' attitudes toward authority, dependency, and aggression; their anxieties and reactions to crises; and their dominant drives and wishes. These various issues are linked to the theoretical problem of "conformity" and to the basic human need for privacy and psychological isolation. Описание: Peasant Wars in Bolivia reveals the active political role played by the Cochabamba valley peasants during the 1952-64 revolutionary period in Bolivia from a non-state perspective. Based on contemporary research in social, political, and cultural issues in Latin America it blends sociological and anthropological methods to go beyond recognized contexts of central power and emphasize the revolutionary experience of the peasants themselves.Drawing on archival research, newspapers, interviews, and a wealth of secondary sources, the book argues that the Cochabamba valley mestizo population of rural workers forged their own collective "campesino" identity alongside their revolutionary struggles against regional elites and the state. This newly created identity allowed the campesinos entry into the Bolivian national political arena as dynamic actors, transformed their subjectivities, and changed the existing political culture of Bolivia. It goes on to analyze the historical status of the revolution and the role of the mestizo peasantry within it in the context of academic and political debates of the first two decades of the twenty-first century.Crossing established borders between history, anthropology, and sociology, Peasant Wars in Bolivia is a fascinating, interdisciplinary exploration of the revolutionary campesinos of the Cochabamba valley, of Bolivia's nationalist revolution, and of the ways it has been interpreted and understood within Bolivian politics and culture.

On the western border of Poland stands an ancient forest, the only primeval forest left in Europe. Today, the people of Poland must decide its future and reconcile its past. Thousands of years old, the Bialowieża Forest is a region of outstanding biodiversity, boasting centuries-old oak trees; endangered animals such as wolves, woodpeckers, and bison; and thousands of species of insects and fungi. Situated in a country seeking to reconcile its communist past with its modern European future, the forest is the subject of debate among villagers, biologists, foresters, environmentalists, and politicians determining what a modern country does with its primeval forest. Should the forest support a flagging economy by providing jobs and renewable natural resources through logging? Or does modernity mean environmental protection and ecotourism? And if so, what version of Poland's history would ecotourists encounter on their trip to the Bialowieża Forest? In Foresters, Peasants, and Beetles, Eunice Blavascunas provides a moving and surprising portrait of the collision of traditional peasant farming, conservation work, and commercial logging in the Bialowieża Forest. As it is simultaneously logged and protected, ancient and modern, Polish and global, the stakes could not be higher as Poles must decide both what the Bialowieża Forest has been and what it will become.
Автор: Shipley Morgan Название: Psychedelic Mysticism: Transforming Consciousness, Religious Experiences, and Voluntary Peasants in Postwar America ISBN: 1498509096 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781498509091 Издательство: Bloomsbury Рейтинг: Цена: 100980.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: Concerned with scholarly, popular, and religious backdrops that understand the connection between psychedelics and mystical experiences to be devoid of moral concerns and ethical dimensions--a position supported empirically by the rise of acid fascism and psychedelic cults by the late 1960s--Psychedelic Mysticism: Transforming Consciousness, Religious Experiences, and Voluntary Peasants in Postwar America traces the development of sixties psychedelic mysticism from the deconditioned mind and perennial philosophy of Aldous Huxley, to the sacramental ethics of Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and Ralph Metzner, to the altruistic religiosity practiced by Stephen Gaskin and The Farm. Building directly off the pioneering psychedelic writing of Huxley, these psychedelic mystics understood the height of psychedelic consciousness as an existential awareness of unitive oneness, a position that offered worldly alternatives to the maladies associated with the postwar moment (e.g., vapid consumerism and materialism, lifeless conformity, unremitting racism, heightened militarism). In opening a doorway to a common world, Morgan Shipley locates how psychedelics challenged the coherency of Western modernity by fundamentally reorienting postwar society away from neoliberal ideologies and toward a sacred understanding of reality defined by mutual coexistence and responsible interdependence. In 1960s America, psychedelics catalyzed a religious awakening defined by compassion, expressed through altruism, and actualized in projects that sought to ameliorate the conditions of the least advantaged among us. In the exact moments that historians and cultural critics often locate as signaling the death knell of the counterculture, Gaskin and The Farm emerged, not as a response to the perceived failures of the hippies, nor as an alternative to sixties politicos, but in an effort to fulfill the religious obligation to help teach the world how to live more harmoniously. Today, as we continue to confront issues of socioeconomic inequality, entrenched differences, widespread violence, and the limits of religious pluralism, Psychedelic Mysticism serves as a timely reminder of how religion in America can operate as a tool for destabilization and as a means to actively reimagine the very basis of how people relate--such a legacy can aid in our own efforts to build a more peaceful, sustainable, and compassionate world.
