Описание: Baudelaire, Mallarme and Valery, three central poets of the modern French tradition, form a noble poetic lineage. Although very different, all three reflected deeply on the principles of poetic creation; all three sought to apply these principles in the practice of writing. The central theme of the eighteen papers collected here is the constant confrontation of theory and practice.

Total Expansion of the Letter: Avant-Garde Art and Language After Mallarmй

Описание: How cubism and Dada radically reimagined the social nature of language, following the utopian poetic vision of St phane Mallarm .

At the outset of the twentieth century, language became a visual medium and a philosophical problem for European avant-garde artists. In Total Expansion of the Letter, art historian Trevor Stark offers a provocative history of this "linguistic turn," centered on the radical doubt about the social function of language that defined the avant-garde movements. Major cubists and Dadaists--including Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Tristan Tzara--appropriated bureaucratic paperwork, newspapers, popular songs, and advertisements, only to render them dysfunctional and incommunicative. In doing so, Stark argues, these figures contended with the utopian vision of the late nineteenth-century poet St phane Mallarm , who promised a "total expansion of the letter."

In his poems, Mallarm claimed, "the act of writing was scrutinized down to its origins." This scrutiny, however, delivered his work into an indeterminate zone between mediums, social practices, and temporalities--a paradox that reverberates through Stark's wide-ranging case studies in the history of the avant-garde. Stark examines Picasso's nearly abstract works of 1910, which promised to unite painting and writing at the brink of illegibility; the cubists' "hope of an anonymous art," expressed in newspaper collages and industrial colors; the collaborative, cacophonous invention of "simultaneous poems" by the Dadaists in Zurich during World War I; and Duchamp's artistic exploration of chance in gambling and finance. Each of these cases reflected the avant-garde's transformative encounter with the premise of Mallarm 's poetics: that language--the very medium of human communication and community--is perpetually in flux and haunted by emptiness.

Описание: This book challenges and replaces the existing view of Mallarme's mission to 're-possess' music on behalf of poetic language. Traditionally, this view focused on only the last fifteen years of the poet's life, and sprang from a belief in Mallarme's 'sudden awakening' to music during an all-Wagner concert in Paris, in 1885. Professor Heath Lees shows that Mallarme's early knowledge and experience of music was much greater than commentators have realized, and that the French poet actually began his writing career with the explicit aim of making music's performance-language of 'effect' the ground of his poetic expression. Integral to the argument is Mallarme's reaction to the work and ideas of Richard Wagner, whose impact on France came in two waves: the first broke during the tempestuous 1860s days of the Paris TannhA¤user, while the second arrived in the mid-1880s, and gave birth to the Revue Wagnerienne. In refuting the critical literature that focuses on only the second of these waves, Lees shows that Mallarme exhibited a highly informed Wagnerian background during the first wave, and that his grasp of the composer's gestural motives and flexible musical prose led him towards a new kind of self-expressive, gestural rhythm that aimed musically to reinvent poetic language. In support of this, the book examines closely what Wagner 'really' said in the prose works that were becoming known in Paris by the 1860s, in particular, Wagner's important French text, the Lettre sur la musique. It also re-examines Baudelaire's classic Wagner-brochure, and reveals its author's surprisingly firm grasp of Wagner's musico-poetic fusion. In musically informed commentary, Professor Lees surveys the four decades of success and failure that resulted from Mallarme's repeated attempts to draw out the musical gestures and resonances of words alone. In the process, he throws new light on many of Mallarme's best-known texts, hitherto judged 'difficult' by those who have failed to appreciate the extent of the poet's heroic descent through the surface of words in search of 'la Musique'.

Описание: This book was originally published in 1976. Mallarme`s writings about the nature and purposes of art lie behind much modern critical theory. There is no sharp distinction between his poetry and his prose. Yet the prose is little studied. Dr Kravis treats it under the headings of literary, music and dramatic criticism, translation, writing on fashion and on language.
