As individual institutions of education at all levels respond to the call for greater accountability and assessment, those who teach literacy face the challenging task of choosing what to measure and how to measure it. Both defining literacy clearly and tying that definition to strategies for assessment are two of many challenges faced by educators, theorists, and members of the public who assume responsibility for assessing literacy as well as developing and improving literacy programs. In a pluralistic and democratic society sensitive to multicultural variation, we need to find our way between the competing needs for inclusiveness and for clear and useful standards. Multiple definitions of literacy raise the issue of whether there can be a standard or set of standards and if so, what they are in an environment of multiple literacies. Indeed, the downside of the defeat of older monolithic notions of literacy is the undermining or at least the questioning of well-established methods of literacy assessment. To some extent, the older methods of assessment have been revised in the light of more expansive definitions of literacy. But will this kind of revision be enough? How are the criteria for judgment to be known and applied? Thus, this volume addresses the problems of assessing literacy development in the context of multiple and inclusive definitions. Each section consists of chapters that deal with the issue of definitions per se, with standards in postsecondary settings, with the K-12 situation, and with alternative, non-school environments where literacy is critical to human functioning in a democratic society.

This book supports teachers of all subject specialisms to consolidate their existing knowledge of language and shows them how to develop skills to use language to build subject knowledge at secondary level. Tasks guide the reader to think about the language we use for different purposes, and how we use it to describe, explain and learn about our world. This paves an accessible way for subject-related language to become more visible and enables readers to use accessible terminology to confidently talk about it, as well as modelling it and guiding the development of its use with all learners, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Starting from basic educational principles, the book asks readers to consider the processes of learning and why every good teacher needs knowledge about language to support this, addressing a range of questions including: Who are the EAL learners? What are the processes of language development? How is language used to present and discuss knowledge in my subject? Why does every good teacher need knowledge about language to support subject literacy? The authors provide examples, discovery tasks, reflections and templates for activities, to help the reader identify the tools they need to set up a framework for scaffolding pupils' language development. With a progression plan, directed tasks, and formative feedback, this framework provides a template for classroom practice and further professional development.

Описание: This book presents an innovative theoretical and methodological approach to study information literacy in higher education contexts. While mainstream studies tend to see information literacy as a technical and universal process, this book proposes a theoretical and methodological framework to study information literacy from a sociocultural perspective, highlighting the importance of the social and cultural contexts in which information literacy develops. This situated approach demands that research data must be analysed in relation to the contexts in which they emerge, so the book proposes a research method based on the study of personal histories and stories, learning situations and intersubjective relationships to characterize the different information profiles of different information users.
Adopting a multidisciplinary approach that combines contributions from educational research, psychology and information sciences, the authors first present a theoretical discussion to argue in favor of the sociocultural paradigm to study information literacy, then present their methodological proposal to observe informational competencies among higher education students, and finally present the results of an empirical study to identify different information literacy profiles among Latin American students and teachers. Breaking with the hegemonic paradigm in the field, Information Literacy in Higher Education - A Sociocultural Perspective provides useful and innovative tools to researchers working in different areas of the social sciences, such as education, psychology, linguistics and information sciences.

"Every teacher in English is a teacher of English," said George Sampson, one of the early school inspectors, back in 1921. It's never been truer, or more relevant.
Literacy has a major impact on young people's life-chances and it is every teacher's responsibility to help build their communication, reading and writing skills. However, this book isn't just about literacy; it's also about what great teachers do in their classrooms, about applying knowledge consistently across classrooms, in order to help pupils to become more confident in their subjects.
This book shows every teacher - whatever your subject - the simple steps which could transform your students into better speakers, listeners, readers and writers. Harnessing a range of straightforward, but powerful techniques, it shows you how to help each student in your subject to improve their spelling, to use the key vocabulary of your subject more accurately and to speak, read and write with confidence like a historian, scientist, designer or mathematician.
The book is structured into clear sections which are then divided into short, easy-to-absorb units on the classroom implications of what we know about literacy. Don't Call it Literacy also includes:
language commentaries which exemplify points made by the author;
talking points at the end of each unit for self-assessment;
a glossary for non-specialists;
subject specific vocabulary for building students' word power;
tutor time spellings lists;
a reading list on teaching, language, literacy and education.
Written by a leading authority in the field, this book will help both trainee and practising secondary school teachers to turn their classroom into literacy-friendly environments, increasing the motivation and achievement of their students.
