The Taliban made piety a business of the state, and thereby intervened in the daily lives and social interactions of Afghan women. Pious Peripheries examines women's resistance through groundbreaking fieldwork at a women's shelter in Kabul, home to runaway wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters of the Taliban. Whether running to seek marriage or divorce, enduring or escaping abuse, or even accused of singing sexually explicit songs in public, "promiscuous" women challenge the status quo—and once marked as promiscuous, women have few resources. This book provides a window into the everyday struggles of Afghan women as they develop new ways to challenge historical patriarchal practices.
Sonia Ahsan-Tirmizi explores how women negotiate gendered power mechanisms, notably those of Islam and Pashtunwali. Sometimes defined as an honor code, Pashtunwali is a discursive and material practice that women embody through praying, fasting, oral and written poetry, and participation in rituals of hospitality and refuge. In taking ownership of Pashtunwali and Islamic knowledge, in both textual and oral forms, women create a new supportive community, finding friendship and solidarity in the margins of Afghan society. So doing, these women redefine the meanings of equality, honor, piety, and promiscuity in Afghanistan.

Описание: Persisting Partition looks at the 1947 Partition of India from a new perspective: through an analysis of women's narratives of Pakistan. Historiography of this period tends to focus on the minutiae of bureaucratic processes, while literary studies appraises the efforts of fiction to represent the human costs of Partition. This study challenges this division between historiography and literary analysis, arguing that it limits any attempt to address the legacy and memorialisation of Partition.
Humaira Saeed considers the nationalist narratives that frame the nation's founding in terms of the masculinist discourses of sacrifice and heroism, rather than in terms of loss and trauma. As such, these narratives resist the effective integration of marginal voices, and Saeed proposes that tensions over how Partition is remembered and narrativized are asserted in particularly gendered ways. Persisting Partition considers how history is mediated through cultural production, as well as the potential for women’s narratives to disrupt the homogenizing effects of dominant national historiography. Through analysing a range of cultural forms—photography, feature film, fiction, and documentary—Saeed argues for a more interdisciplinary approach to the ways in which Partition and Pakistan might be narrativised.

The military rule of General Zia ul-Haq, former President of Pakistan, had significant political repercussions for the country. Islamization policies were far more pronounced and control over women became the key marker of the state's adherence to religious norms. Women's rights activists mobilized as a result, campaigning to reverse oppressive policies and redefine the relationship between state, society and Islam. Their calls for a liberal democracy led them to be targeted and suppressed. This book is a history of the modern women's movement in Pakistan. The research is based on documents from the Women's Action Forum archives, court judgments on relevant cases, as well as interviews with activists, lawyers and judges and analysis of newspapers and magazines. Ayesha Khan argues that the demand for a secular state and resistance to Islamization should not be misunderstood as Pakistani women sympathizing with a western agenda. Rather, their work is a crucial contribution to the evolution of the Pakistani state. The book outlines the discriminatory laws and policies that triggered domestic and international outcry, landmark cases of sexual violence that rallied women activists together and the important breakthroughs that enhanced women's rights. At a time when the women's movement in Pakistan is in danger of shrinking, this book highlights its historic significance and its continued relevance today.

Описание: Afghanistan is regarded as a 'classical patriarchal' society, where old social tradition, religious doctrine and socio-economic and cultural backwardness have made women second-class citizens. But how have women - on different levels - lived in Afghanistan? How have they treated been treated, both in the private sphere and in public? And how did they resist mistreatment during the war inside Afghanistan, in refugee camps or in diaspora? Who are the sponsors and perpetrators of human rights violations against Afghanistani women? What are the connections between Islam, local customs, the mistreatment of women, and women's connectedness to revolution and jihad? This book provides answers to these questions through an innovative study of the life and short stories of one of the country's leading female writers, Maryam Mahboob. If offers a completely different image of both the suffering and resistance of Afghanistani women than that we in the 'West' have come to know. About the author: Dr Faridullah Bezhan was born and grew up in Afghanistan, where he taught literature at Kabul University. He is now a Senior Research Fellow at the Monash Asia Institute, Monash University Australia. He has published several books and articles in English and Persian on the history and literature of Afghanistan, especially the work of the country's prominent and emerging female authors. *** This is a deeply touching, painfully thoughtful expose on the plight of women in Afghanistan, analyzed through the creative lens of Mahboob's writing....There is no doubt that the true purpose of the work is to bring readers deep into the psychological conflict and personal turmoil women have suffered throughout the horrific tumult of Afghani life and politics for nearly four decades, as seen in Mahboob's works. It also serves as a powerful launching point for readers who want to pursue the bigger issues that the work takes on, including diaspora dilemmas, gender studies, and religious radicalization's impact on civil society. Автор: Anne-Cathrine Riebnitzsky Название: The Women`s War: A Female Soldier`s Account of Her Time in Afghanistan ISBN: 9353886309 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789353886301 Издательство: Sage Publications Рейтинг: Цена: 16890.00 T Наличие на складе: Поставка под заказ. Описание: The Women's War is the gripping true story of a Danish female soldier's tours to the Helmand Province in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009. There she comes into contact with the Afghan women who are fighting against oppression, domestic violence and the horror regime of the Taliban, and together they initiate a covert collaboration. The women receive the necessary aid to establish dressmaking rooms, beauty salons, chicken farms and other projects while being aware of the fact that the international military forces are their only chance to get rid of the Taliban.
The Women's War emerged out of the friendships built by a soldier with Afghan women who helped the international military forces in unexpected ways. It is a book by a woman in the armed forces about what war does to women, about the looming risk of taking chances in wartime and about grief over fallen friends, but more importantly, it is about how women in one instance found the will to not only survive but to make something out of the terrible conditions that war brings.
Protecting the Afghan Women focuses on the injustices women in Afghanistan face on a regular basis and has a strong focus that uses many examples throughout to back up its claims. It examines the deep cultural and historical roots of discrimination and violence against women in Afghanistan, including the country's strong religious and cultural practices. It looks at the relevant verses of Islamic scripture and the thinking that has developed around them to search for an answer. Does the problem lie in widespread ignorance by so-called mullahs and religious leaders, or is it a continuum of extreme abuse against women that has roots much deeper and long-standing than the relatively brief era of Taliban control?
The book discusses these issues at length and also considers Afghanistan's new constitution, attempts to determine the state's obligation to protect and advance women's rights, and addresses the failure of the Afghan government and human rights actors to promote women's rights in Afghanistan in a broader sense.
The ability to speak and be heard matters. It matters for your credibility and your career. Yet, the reality is that many women find it challenging to speak and be fully heard.
Have you been ignored or interrupted in meetings?
Have you avoided giving a speech or presentation?
Have you wanted to speak out but felt not ready, not prepared enough?
Women's voices are simply heard less. It explains why gender balance is still proving so hard to achieve, decades after legislative frameworks have been put in place.
This book is a handbook for millennial women, designed to help them speak and be heard, to help them navigate the challenges, maximise their success and fast forward their careers.
