Watches Without Time is a compilation of the emails he sent home to family and friends during that period--so that, as he writes in the Preface, "should anything have ever happened to me, they would know what I went through."Watches Without Time gives a granular account of the challenges Zeller and his men encountered in Ghazni, and of the complex missions they undertook there. Written in clear and searingly intimate prose, it highlights the many emotion-laden experiences he underwent both during his tour and after his return to the United States.

Описание: Afghanistan is regarded as a 'classical patriarchal' society, where old social tradition, religious doctrine and socio-economic and cultural backwardness have made women second-class citizens. But how have women - on different levels - lived in Afghanistan? How have they treated been treated, both in the private sphere and in public? And how did they resist mistreatment during the war inside Afghanistan, in refugee camps or in diaspora? Who are the sponsors and perpetrators of human rights violations against Afghanistani women? What are the connections between Islam, local customs, the mistreatment of women, and women's connectedness to revolution and jihad? This book provides answers to these questions through an innovative study of the life and short stories of one of the country's leading female writers, Maryam Mahboob. If offers a completely different image of both the suffering and resistance of Afghanistani women than that we in the 'West' have come to know. About the author: Dr Faridullah Bezhan was born and grew up in Afghanistan, where he taught literature at Kabul University. He is now a Senior Research Fellow at the Monash Asia Institute, Monash University Australia. He has published several books and articles in English and Persian on the history and literature of Afghanistan, especially the work of the country's prominent and emerging female authors. *** This is a deeply touching, painfully thoughtful expose on the plight of women in Afghanistan, analyzed through the creative lens of Mahboob's writing....There is no doubt that the true purpose of the work is to bring readers deep into the psychological conflict and personal turmoil women have suffered throughout the horrific tumult of Afghani life and politics for nearly four decades, as seen in Mahboob's works. It also serves as a powerful launching point for readers who want to pursue the bigger issues that the work takes on, including diaspora dilemmas, gender studies, and religious radicalization's impact on civil society. The Taliban made piety a business of the state, and thereby intervened in the daily lives and social interactions of Afghan women. Pious Peripheries examines women's resistance through groundbreaking fieldwork at a women's shelter in Kabul, home to runaway wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters of the Taliban. Whether running to seek marriage or divorce, enduring or escaping abuse, or even accused of singing sexually explicit songs in public, "promiscuous" women challenge the status quo—and once marked as promiscuous, women have few resources. This book provides a window into the everyday struggles of Afghan women as they develop new ways to challenge historical patriarchal practices.
Sonia Ahsan-Tirmizi explores how women negotiate gendered power mechanisms, notably those of Islam and Pashtunwali. Sometimes defined as an honor code, Pashtunwali is a discursive and material practice that women embody through praying, fasting, oral and written poetry, and participation in rituals of hospitality and refuge. In taking ownership of Pashtunwali and Islamic knowledge, in both textual and oral forms, women create a new supportive community, finding friendship and solidarity in the margins of Afghan society. So doing, these women redefine the meanings of equality, honor, piety, and promiscuity in Afghanistan.

Protecting the Afghan Women focuses on the injustices women in Afghanistan face on a regular basis and has a strong focus that uses many examples throughout to back up its claims. It examines the deep cultural and historical roots of discrimination and violence against women in Afghanistan, including the country's strong religious and cultural practices. It looks at the relevant verses of Islamic scripture and the thinking that has developed around them to search for an answer. Does the problem lie in widespread ignorance by so-called mullahs and religious leaders, or is it a continuum of extreme abuse against women that has roots much deeper and long-standing than the relatively brief era of Taliban control?
The book discusses these issues at length and also considers Afghanistan's new constitution, attempts to determine the state's obligation to protect and advance women's rights, and addresses the failure of the Afghan government and human rights actors to promote women's rights in Afghanistan in a broader sense.
Female seminaries in nineteenth-century America offered middle-class women the rare privilege of training in music and the liberal arts. A music background in particular provided the foundation for a teaching career, one of the few paths open to women. Jewel A. Smith opens the doors of four female seminaries, revealing a milieu where rigorous training focused on music as an artistic pursuit rather than a social skill. Drawing on previously untapped archives, Smith charts women's musical experiences and training as well as the curricula and instruction available to them, the repertoire they mastered, and the philosophies undergirding their education. She also examines the complex tensions between the ideals of a young democracy and a deeply gendered system of education and professional advancement. An in-depth study of female seminaries as major institutions of learning, Transforming Women's Education illuminates how musical training added to women's lives and how their artistic acumen contributed to American society.

MEET DAISY DE MELKER, who 'lovingly' prepared a flask of strychnine-laced coffee for her son. She is very different from Najwa Petersen, who carefully planned a 'house robbery' to eliminate her musician husband. Chan van Heerden placed her victim's facial skin in the freezer for preservation, yet Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron wished to dispose of her mother's body before it was even cold. And Dina Rodrigues? She 'wouldn't harm a fly' - but went and organised a hit on a baby.
Women are not paragons of virtue who cannot commit murder. Nor are they always insane when they do deliberately cause death. And the women with 'blood on their hands' are not homogeneous.
In Blood on Her Hands, award-winning journalist Tanya Farber investigates the lives, minds and motivations of some of South Africa's most notorious female murderers, from the poisonous nurse Daisy de Melker, to the privileged but deeply disturbed Najwa Petersen, to the mysterious Joey Haarhoff, who died before revealing the fate of her victims. Written in a style lighter than the subject matter might suggest, Blood on Her Hands will keep you reading until late at night.

Описание: The Book of Esther (an orphan raised by a male cousin) has haunted me from the time I first taught it as a Bible Study It was not at all like I thought. How could this happen to a Godly teenager who had been taught scripture nightly by her cousin? Twenty years later and having taught it from 8 different sources I continued to want to find answers Sometimes there is nothing one can do to solve an issue but dig deeper into the story - learn more about the times and the Jewish life style. Thus, I began my search Young women then were expected to learn household chores, how to cook, perhaps plant a garden, sell items in the marketplace, be faithful to attend the synagogue, and obey their parents. Mordecai, her cousin, would have trained her more like a son Nightly he would have shared God's word As he worked at the King's gate, except for days of worship, she would have played a bigger part at her age in fulfilling the chores of a wife/mother. Once a young girl began her period (per Leviticus 15:19-23) however, things changed. It was then time to look at marriage. At the same time in their lives the King has sent soldiers all over his kingdom to find him a wife. Mordecai would have instantly known this as it would have been interesting talk at the gate where he worked. However, I don't believe he thought it would affect him We see in scripture that Esther knew of him often counting his coins in the evenings and thought he was planning her dowry. Alice K. Rawlings is an experienced Bible teacher and speaker. Her goal in life has been to equip ladies to be Christ-centered and vocal about it She serves as the Women's Bible Study teacher at Christ's Community Church where her husband, Scott, has ministered for the past 50 years They are the parents of 5 adult children - one, now the teaching pastor and one grandson the youth minister at CCC. Besides their ministry at CCC they are very active in Uganda having built a baby rescue mission, and help fund two orphanages. Two adult orphans are now earning their master's degrees here to return home to teach and preach.

Описание: Even after the turbulent events that culminated in the Revolution of 1848, French women remained disenfranchised and disillusioned due to their exclusion from the public domain. However, a group of pioneering women persistently challenged the issue of civil rights and the legal minority of women in many genres: beginning with feminist journals then satirical poetry, fiction, pamphlets, posters, treatises, inspirational slogans, letters, and even travelogues. This book gives an overview of the corpus of writings by women at this historic moment and examines the political culture into which these writings were produced. Joyce Dixon-Fyle argues that the genres selected by women writers such as Eug nie Niboyet, Jeanne Deroin, Jenny d'H ricourt, Juliette Adam, Maria Deraimes were simply modes of expression determined less by choice than by the repressive politics and censorship of the July Monarchy, which was relentless in its attempts to silence and marginalize women.
