Описание: Laughter is the natural response of most Jamaicans to the nameAlexander Bedward, long proclaimed as the lunatic who literally attempted tofly to heaven. In Alexander Bedward, the Prophet ofAugust Town: Race, Religion and Colonialism, Dave St Aubyn Gossedebunks this common image of Bedward by drawing on new sourcesto help cast Bedward in a more positive light. Gosse argues that Bedward oughtto be recognized as one of the significant black nationalists of the latenineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Bedwardism was a highly organized movement, especially among theworking class in the early 1900s. Bedward’s Jamaica Native Baptist Church waslocated in almost every parish of Jamaica and had numerous chapters abroad. Heaffirmed Africa, its culture and traditions, laid the foundation for laterblack nationalist movements such as Garveyism and Rastafari, and brought tonational prominence Revivalism. Bedward challenged the colonial order and thosewho attempted to “save” black Jamaicans from the backwardness of Africantraditions, and in the process, he became a hero to the masses. Many of Jamaica’s colonial laws – most notably the lunacy andvagrancy acts – were devised to stifle all expressions of African folk cultureand were instituted as a response to Bedwardism. Colonial governments usedthese laws to effectively silence their Afro-Jamaican critics and distort thehistorical record. Gosse’s work offers a necessary corrective to that record.

Описание: The project of decolonisation in the Caribbean is an ongoing one. The emergence of Caribbean theological reflection and the development of Caribbean Theology has naturally been part and parcel of the growing consciousness of Caribbean identity that began in the 1960s. Initially stymied by influences from the North that wrongly identified the movement as Liberation Theology with the attendant tentacles of socialism, Neville W. deSouza was the outspoken 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands whose expressions of the role of the church and the state and the alignment of the church with the working class, the people, rather than elite, to bring about social change, gave voice to the indigenization of the Church in Jamaica. In Journey to the Promised Land , Howard K.A. Gregory presents deSouza’s Synod sermons between 1980 and 2000. Delivered during a socially and economically tumultuous time in Jamaica’s contemporary history, deSouza brought theological and biblical reflection on the challenges facing the country and the mission to which the Church and the nation were called. Two decades later, the messages still resonate and reflect the depth of Bishop deSouza’s theological reflection. The Bishop rarely spoke from a prepared text and so this collection has been prepared from recordings of deSouza’s addresses. Eloquently contextualised by Gregory’s introduction and Epilogue, the work is further enhanced by Professor Patrick Bryan’s biographical sketch making Journey to the Promised Land a welcomed addition to the burgeoning work in not only Caribbean Theology, but also in Black Theology and Feminist Theology and Caribbean studies generally.

Описание:

This book analyses South Asian Islam's engagement with the West, and Britain in particular. It traces the roots of British multiculturalism to South Asia and the Deobandi school of Islam. The work shows how the pattern of interaction that initially emerged between the Deobandi Muslims and the colonial British state in late-19th century replicated itself in the British society in the second half of 20th century. The monograph reflects upon Islam's 'compatibility' with liberal democracy as well as explores how it contributed to its origins in the Enlightenment ethos.

A nuanced, sensitive and topical study, this book will be essential to understanding the world in the light of contemporary world events--Paris 13/11 and Charlie Hebdo attacks, the Danish cartoon controversy, and the Trojan Horse incident in certain British schools as well as the much earlier Rushdie affair. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of political science, religion, political Islam, British and South Asian Studies, and history.

Описание: Positioning race front and centre, this book theorizes that political violence, in the form of a socio-political process that differentiates between human and less-than-human populations, is used by the state of Israel in racializing and ruling the citizens of occupied Palestine. Lentin argues that Israel’s rule over Palestine is an example of Agamben’s state of exception, Goldberg’s racial state and Wolfe’s settler colony; the Israeli racial settler colony employs its laws to rule besieged Palestine, while excluding itself and its Jewish citizen-colonists from legal instruments and governmental technologies. Governing through emergency legislation and through practices of exception, emergency, necessity and security, Israel positions itself outside domestic and international law. Deconstructing Agamben’s Eurocentric theoretical position Lentin shows that it occludes colonialism, settler colonialism and anti-colonialism and fails to specifically foreground race; instead she combines the work of Wolfe, who proposes race as a trace of settler colonialism, and Weheliye, who argues that Agamben’s western-centric understanding of exception fail to speak from explicitly racialized and gendered standpoints. Employing existing media, activist, and academic accounts of racialization this book deliberately breaks from white, Western theorizations of biopolitics, exception, and bare life, and instead foregrounds race and gender in analysing settler colonial conditions in Israel.

Описание: A historical analysis of the racial views of atheists in the United States and Britain During the second half of the nineteenth century popular atheist movements were emerging in the United States and Britain and skepticism about Christianity was becoming widespread. This newly embraced secularization created a paradox. How could Western civilization represent the pinnacle of human progress, as most white atheists accepted, when the majority of these societies still believed in Christianity? The result of this tension was a profound ambivalence regarding issues of racial and civilizational superiority. At times, white atheists assented to scientific racism and hierarchical conceptions of civilization; at others, they denounced racial prejudice and spoke favorably of non-white, non-Western civilizations. This book offers a long-overdue historical analysis of the racial views of atheists and freethinkers in the United States and Britain during this time period. It provides a much-needed account of the complex and sometimes contradictory ideas espoused by this transatlantic community, tracing the complex ways in which they grappled with ideas about white superiority, and the role they played in early advocacy against racism and in favor of human rights. This exciting book delves into an understudied aspect of secular studies, and will be welcomed by anyone seeking a better understanding of modern racism and its origins.

Orientalism and Imperialism: From Nineteenth-Century Missionary Imaginings to the Contemporary Middle East

Описание:

Using the work of Edward Said as a point of departure, this book dissects the concept of Orientalism through the lens of 19th century missionary impressions of Kurdistan. Wilcox argues that dominant interpretations of Said's work have a tendency to present Orientalism as an essentialist practice and instead offers an alternative manifestation in which the Oriental is perceived as the mutable product of cultural forces.

The relationship between missionaries and imperialism has long been a contentious issue with many scholars highlighting their apparent ambiguity. This study reveals how Protestant missionaries can be identified as anti-imperialist in their rhetoric of ecumenical independence; yet through their preconceptions of Oriental inferiority, they contributed to a more subtle undermining of local forms of knowledge and identity. Wilcox argues that this apparent ambiguity is in part a consequence of the ways in which the term imperialism is frequently used to allude to diverse and even contradictory meanings; therefore it is not so much the missionaries who are ambiguous, as the ways in which they are judged by today's multivalent standards. The analysis also makes clear the complex discursive processes which can undermine the actions of altruistic individuals.

By drawing threads from this 19th century example into the current geopolitical foreground of Middle East-West relations, this book not only sheds light upon a little-known historical case study but also illuminates larger questions of the present and future encouraging a more vigorous examination of contemporary Orientalist prejudices.

Описание:

Edward Said, the famous Palestinian American scholar and activist, was one of the twentieth century's most iconic public intellectuals, whose pioneering and - to some - controversial work on Orientalism shaped Middle Eastern and postcolonial studies and beyond. But how exactly did he arrive at his famous maxim to 'speak truth to power'?
This dual biographical study examines the lives of Edward Said and the eminent Lebanese philosopher and diplomat Charles Malik, a distant relative 30 years his senior whom Said knew from childhood as "Uncle Charles." To Said, Malik was no ordinary relative; in his memoir, he called Malik "the great negative intellectual lesson of my life", and was to describe him as "an ideal as I was growing up" only to later claim Malik "went through an ugly transformation that I could never come to terms with". M.D. Walhout charts the development of these two remarkable figures, reconstructing in the process the way in which American power in the Middle East came to have a defining effect on Arab intellectuals in the twentieth century. Exploring issues of religion and nationalism, Walhout shows how Said came to reject much of what Malik stood for: Christian faith, hardline anti-Communism and the benign nature of American power. He argues that the example of Malik was instrumental in the development of Said's later belief that the true vocation of the intellectual was not to compromise with power, but to resist it.

Описание: Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe polarised opinion in early 20th India by his unconventional methods of educating Kashmiris and, through them, changing the social order of a society steeped in old superstitions. He was a man of contradictions: a Christian and a boxer, a missionary who made very few converts, a staunch supporter of British imperialism and a friend of Kashmir’s political reformers. He made enemies of the Hindu Establishment, who described him as ‘exceedingly a bad man and one too much fond of cricket,’ but earned the respect of two successive Hindu Maharajas, as well as the Muslim leader, who succeeded them. He was 27 when he became the Principal of the Church Missionary Society’s school in Kashmir in 1890 and he left as India gained independence in 1947. His vision was of a school in action, vigorously involved in the affairs and problems of the city of Srinagar, to support the weak and to fight corruption wherever it occurred. Under his leadership the masters and boys were engaged in fighting fires in the city, saving people from drowning, taking hospital patients for outings on the lakes, helping women and removing the ban on the remarriage of young widows. His avowed purpose was to make his students into honest, fearless leaders, who would serve their beloved country of Kashmir. The book begins with the medieval condition of Kashmir in the nineteenth century; describes the development of his unusual approach to education; explores the many challenges he had to overcome, including his chronic bad health, his difficulties with the CMS and the opposition of the Hindu establishment and State Government; and contrasts this with the speedy and enthusiastic acceptance by his young Kashmiri teachers and students of what he was offering and how together they transformed their society and prepared Kashmir for independence.

Описание: "Clarence Jordan spoke with an unwavering prophetic voice. He firmly rejected materialism, militarism, and racism as obstacles to authentic faith... He was a fearless and innovative defender of human rights." --President Jimmy Carter

On 440 depleted acres in Sumter County, Georgia, a young Baptist preacher and farmer named Clarence Jordan gathered a few families and set out to show that Jesus intended more than spiritual fellowship. Like the first Christians, they would share their land, money, and possessions. Working together to rejuvenate the soil and the local economy, they would demonstrate racial and social justice with their lives.

Black and white community members eating together at the same table scandalized local Christians, drew the ire of the KKK, and led to drive-by shootings, a firebombing, and an economic boycott.

This bold experiment in nonviolence, economic justice, and sustainable agriculture was deeply rooted in Clarence Jordan's understanding of the person and teachings of Jesus, which stood in stark contrast to the hypocrisy of churches that blessed wars, justified wealth disparity, and enforced racial segregation. "You can't put Christianity into practice," Jordan wrote, "You can't make it work. As desperately as it is needed in this poor, broken world, it is not a philosophy of life to be 'tried.' Nor is it a social or ethical ideal which has tantalized humankind with the possibility of attainment. For Christianity is not a system you work - it is a Person who works you."

This selection from his talks and writings introduces Clarence Jordan's radically biblical vision to a new generation of peacemakers, community builders, and activists.
