Описание: The project of decolonisation in the Caribbean is an ongoing one. The emergence of Caribbean theological reflection and the development of Caribbean Theology has naturally been part and parcel of the growing consciousness of Caribbean identity that began in the 1960s. Initially stymied by influences from the North that wrongly identified the movement as Liberation Theology with the attendant tentacles of socialism, Neville W. deSouza was the outspoken 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands whose expressions of the role of the church and the state and the alignment of the church with the working class, the people, rather than elite, to bring about social change, gave voice to the indigenization of the Church in Jamaica. In Journey to the Promised Land , Howard K.A. Gregory presents deSouza’s Synod sermons between 1980 and 2000. Delivered during a socially and economically tumultuous time in Jamaica’s contemporary history, deSouza brought theological and biblical reflection on the challenges facing the country and the mission to which the Church and the nation were called. Two decades later, the messages still resonate and reflect the depth of Bishop deSouza’s theological reflection. The Bishop rarely spoke from a prepared text and so this collection has been prepared from recordings of deSouza’s addresses. Eloquently contextualised by Gregory’s introduction and Epilogue, the work is further enhanced by Professor Patrick Bryan’s biographical sketch making Journey to the Promised Land a welcomed addition to the burgeoning work in not only Caribbean Theology, but also in Black Theology and Feminist Theology and Caribbean studies generally.

Описание: Inward Yearnings: Jamaica’s Journey to Nationhood is a pioneering case study of an Anglo-Caribbean island’s search for a racial selfhood, its nervous embrace of its African heritage and ultimately a nationalism that reflected those inner longings. These complex and interrelated processes manifested themselves with the founding of the Universal Negro Improvement Association by Marcus Garvey in 1914, the emergence of Rastafarianism and the Back to Africa Movement in the 1930s, the People’s National Party’s adoption of self-government as its goal in 1940, and the appearance of numerous black consciousness groups in the 1950s.The first half of the book excavates the roots of these inner struggles, and their expressions and roles in Jamaica’s society and culture. The second half examines Jamaica’s entry into the West Indies Federation in 1958 and its secession by means of a referendum in 1961. The Colonial Office had convinced the ten federating units that they were all too small to make their individual independence a viable option. The Jamaicans attempted to subsume their nationalism in formation into a larger West Indian nationalism but the process failed. A federal union had been constructed upon a watery foundation.Palmer’s book is a carefully researched history of the federation’s failure and of Jamaica’s decision to affirm its own political identity and selfhood. The book is based largely on manuscript sources located in the British National Archives at Kew Gardens, the Jamaica Archives in Spanish Town and the National Archives of the United States located in College Park. The Jamaican newspaper, the Daily Gleaner, also constituted an invaluable source.

Описание: My Political Journey is P.J. Patterson’s account of his time as an active and successful participant in the political and social development of Jamaica and the Caribbean, from the mid-1950s well into the early 2000s. He was widely regarded as a master political strategist and universally acknowledged as an astute negotiator.Jamaica is an enigma: its global impact belies its population and geographical size. This story of one of its most exceptional citizens is an enlightening revelation of the island’s political and cultural narrative. Patterson was born in 1935, the dawn of a new era in the development of Jamaica and the Caribbean. A previously disenfranchised population would gain a voice through universal adult suffrage and have a say in the direction of the nation’s affairs. Within a few decades, an independent nation would emerge to make a significant impact on the global landscape. Patterson is both a product of this new Jamaica and one of its architects, and his is a compelling and intimate account of a dramatic era for the young nation.P.J. Patterson led his country with distinction, implementing policies and programmes to foster social renewal and the development of a modern Jamaica that was prepared to face the challenges of the new millennium. Throughout his career in the People’s National Party, he gained international respect through the pivotal roles he played in the advancement of the causes of the developing countries of the world. My Political Journey recounts his performance at the national, regional and global levels and is a fascinating record of a nation’s postcolonial growth.

Описание: In Brooklyn's Promised Land, Judith Wellman not only tells the important narrative of Weeksville's growth, disappearance, and eventual rediscovery, but also highlights the stories of the people who created this community. In 1966 a group of students, Boy Scouts, and local citizens rediscovered all that remained of a then virtually unknown community called Weeksville: four frame houses on Hunterfly Road. The infrastructure and vibrant history of Weeksville, an African American community that had become one of the largest free black communities in nineteenth century United States, were virtually wiped out by Brooklyn's exploding population and expanding urban grid.
Weeksville was founded by African American entrepreneurs after slavery ended in New York State in 1827. Located in eastern Brooklyn, Weeksville provided a space of physical safety, economic prosperity, education, and even political power for its black population, who organized churches, a school, orphan asylum, home for the aged, newspapers, and the national African Civilization Society. Notable residents of Weeksville, such as journalist and educator Junius P. Morell, participated in every major national effort for African American rights, including the Civil War.

Drawing on maps, newspapers, census records, photographs, and the material culture of buildings and artifacts, Wellman reconstructs the social history and national significance of this extraordinary place. Through the lens of this local community, Brooklyn's Promised Land highlights themes still relevant to African Americans across the country.

Описание: An excellent Afikoman gift for the teen or young adult at the seder... Diner...writes in a clear style that pulls together that diverse entity known as the American Jewish community.--The Chicago Jewish Star
An engaging chronicle of Jewish life in the United States, A New Promised Land reconstructs the multifaceted background and very American adaptations of this religious group, from the arrival of twenty-three Jews in the New World in 1654, through the development of the Orthodox, conservative, and
Reform movements, to the ordination of Sally Priesand as the first woman rabbi in the United States.
Hasia Diner supplies fascinating details about Jewish religious traditions, holidays, and sacred texts. In addition, she relates the history of the Jewish religious, political, and intellectual institutions in the United States, and addresses some of the biggest issues facing Jewish Americans today,
including their increasingly complex relationship with Israel.
