Описание: Merchants' shouts, jostling strangers, aromas of fresh fish and flowers, plodding horses, and friendly chatter long filled the narrow, crowded streets of the European city. As they developed over many centuries, these spaces of commerce, communion, and commuting framed daily life. At its heyday in the 1800s, the European street was the place where social worlds connected and collided. Brian Ladd recounts a rich social and cultural history of the European city street, tracing its transformation from a lively scene of trade and crowds into a thoroughfare for high-speed transportation. Looking closely at four major cities--London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna--Ladd uncovers both the joys and the struggles of a past world. The story takes us up to the twentieth century, when the life of the street was transformed as wealthier citizens withdrew from the crowds to seek refuge in suburbs and automobiles. As demographics and technologies changed, so did the structure of cities and the design of streets, significantly shifting our relationships to them. In today's world of high-speed transportation and impersonal marketplaces, Ladd leads us to consider how we might draw on our history to once again build streets that encourage us to linger. By unearthing the vivid descriptions recorded by amused and outraged contemporaries, Ladd reveals the changing nature of city life, showing why streets matter and how they can contribute to public life.

Описание: This book presents, for the first time, a coherent, tightly argued history of medieval mediality, which also casts a new light on modern thinking about the medial. Abundance and lack constitute the defining feature of all media forms. These forms always undertake to preserve, transmit, or give access to something that might otherwise be lost, or remain inaccessible or ineffective. But at the same time they are always in danger of disguising or distorting what they are referring to, or of missing their targetaltogether. Medieval culture offers an excellent chance to observe this. In this culture, media forms were places of mediated immediacy. They transported a presence of the divine, but also knowledge of its unattainability. This volume investigates the multi-layered and fascinating approaches of medieval authors to the word and writing, the body and materiality, and their experimentation with the possibilities of media before the concept was invented.
This volume addresses controversies connected to the testing of the capacities and potentials of mediums. Today we commonly?associate the term "medium" with the technical communication between transmitters and receivers. Yet this term likewise applies to?those who cooperate with agencies that exceed the presumed domain of the material world. Insofar as one presumes a division?between distinctly opposed categories of religion and the secular, technical media tend to be associated with the secular and human?(trance) mediums tend to be associated with religion after 1900. This volume concerns the ways in which the term?medium still marks an overlapping of – and thus problematizes – the aforementioned division between religion and the secular, the?personal and the technological.
The term medium carries with it a seed of doubt that is itself inseparable from investment in the medium's power: insofar as they?communicate with an "other" realm, mediums offer the hope and promise of new possibilities and improved efficiency, and thus of a?better life; yet they have simultaneously been under suspicion of altering (or even inventing) the messages they communicate. It is due?to this combination of promise and suspicion that "mediumism" has tended to evoke scientific, religious, and moral controversies. Thus,?we can speak of a "mediumistic trial" – that is, a process in which a medium is put to the test concerning its potentials and?trustworthiness. Around 1800, experts were asked if a modern secular institution would be capable of inspiring, domesticating or?excluding trance mediumship. This question has stayed with us ever since, and the answers have remained inconclusive. That is why?the past and present of mediumship may be asked to elucidate each other.

Seventh and eighth-century papyri, inscriptions, and coins constitute the main evidence for the rise of Arabic as a hegemonic language emerging from the complex fabric of Graeco-Roman-Iranian Late Antiquity. This volume examines these sources in order to gauge the social ecology of Arabic writing within the broader late antique continuum.
Starting from the functional interplay of Arabic with other languages in multilingual archives as well as the mediality of practices of public Arabic writing, the study correlates the rise of Arabic as an imperial language to social interactions: the negotiation between the Arab-Muslim imperial elite and non-Arabicized regional elites of the early Islamic empire. Using layout, formulae and technical terminology to trace common patterns and disruptions across sources from the Atlantic to Central Asia, the volume illuminates the distinctive formal varieties of official Umayyad and early Abbasid imperial documents compared to informal Arabic writings as well as to neighboring scribal traditions in other languages.
The volume connects documentary practices to broader imperial policies, opening an unprecedented window into the strategies of governance that lay at the core of the early Islamic empire.

Описание: Elia
