Описание: Self reinvention has become a preoccupation of contemporary culture. In the last decade, Hollywood made a 500-million-dollar bet on this idea with movies such as Multiplicity, Fight Club, eXistenZ, and Catch Me If You Can. Self reinvention marks the careers of Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Martha Stewart, and Robin Williams. The Nike ads of LeBron James, the experiments of New Age spirituality, the mores of contemporary teen culture, and the obsession with "extreme makeovers" are all examples of our culture's fixation with change. In a time marked by plenitude, transformation is one of the few things these parties have in common. Although transformation is widely acknowledged as a defining characteristic of our culture, we have almost no studies on what it is or how it works. Transformations offers the first comprehensive and systematic view. It is an ethnography of the contemporary world.

Описание: Recent international interest in the painters of the Mexican mural movement, such as Rivera and Orozco, has brought Latin American art to a wider audience than ever before but has often failed to confront its continuing marginalization within art criticism. Drawing the Line is an exploration of the areas occupied by Latin American art and culture between the ongoing traditions of its indigenous inhabitants, its colonial heritage and its contemporary relationship to the cultural politics of North America and Europe. It looks at the way cultural identity has been constructed by artists from the 1940s to the present day and challenges the way art criticism has hitherto dealt with Latin American art. Established stereotypes of Latin American culture are discussed in terms of their relevance to contemporary artists. The book looks at the frequent subversion of dominant images and conventions of European art--such as the political significance of landscape painted as an attempt to define a specifically Latin American reality, or the constant reworking of familiar icons of European art--and explores the importance of Latin America to the European surrealist movement. The authors examine the significance of popular art--such as the Chilean arpilleras whichcommemorate the "disappeared" of Pinochet's regime--and relate it to the traditional "high art/low art" dichotomy. Including new perspectives on race and gender, Drawing the Line is the most comprehensive account of contemporary Latin American art ever to appear in English.

Описание: In the past years, reflections on Jewish literatures and theoretical and methodological approaches discussed in Comparative Literature have converged. Places and Forms of Encounter in Jewish Literatures. Transfer, Mediality and Situativity brings together close readings and contextualizations of Jewish literatures with theories discussed in Comparative and World Literature Studies. The contributions are arranged in five chapters capturing central processes, actors and dynamics in the making of literatures, namely Literary Agents, Literary Figures, Writing Voids, Making of Literatures and Perceiving and Creating Languages. The volume seeks to illuminate the interrelations between literary systems, and to highlight Jewish literatures as a prism for encounters on the levels of text, discourse and culture, and their transformative force.
This volume addresses controversies connected to the testing of the capacities and potentials of mediums. Today we commonly?associate the term "medium" with the technical communication between transmitters and receivers. Yet this term likewise applies to?those who cooperate with agencies that exceed the presumed domain of the material world. Insofar as one presumes a division?between distinctly opposed categories of religion and the secular, technical media tend to be associated with the secular and human?(trance) mediums tend to be associated with religion after 1900. This volume concerns the ways in which the term?medium still marks an overlapping of – and thus problematizes – the aforementioned division between religion and the secular, the?personal and the technological.
The term medium carries with it a seed of doubt that is itself inseparable from investment in the medium's power: insofar as they?communicate with an "other" realm, mediums offer the hope and promise of new possibilities and improved efficiency, and thus of a?better life; yet they have simultaneously been under suspicion of altering (or even inventing) the messages they communicate. It is due?to this combination of promise and suspicion that "mediumism" has tended to evoke scientific, religious, and moral controversies. Thus,?we can speak of a "mediumistic trial" – that is, a process in which a medium is put to the test concerning its potentials and?trustworthiness. Around 1800, experts were asked if a modern secular institution would be capable of inspiring, domesticating or?excluding trance mediumship. This question has stayed with us ever since, and the answers have remained inconclusive. That is why?the past and present of mediumship may be asked to elucidate each other.

Описание: While place-based pilgrimage is an embodied practice, can it be experienced in its fullness through built environments, assemblages of souvenirs, and music? Imaging Pilgrimage explores contemporary art that is created after a pilgrimage and intended to act as a catalyst for the embodied experience of others. Each chapter focuses on a contemporary artwork that links one landscape to another—from the Spanish Camino to a backyard in the Pacific Northwest, from Lourdes to South Africa, from Jerusalem to England, and from Ecuador to California. The close attention to context and experience allows for popular practices like the making of third-class or "contact" relics to augment conversations about the authenticity or perceived power of a replica or copy; it also challenges the tendency to think of the “original” in hierarchic terms.
The book brings various fields into conversation by offering a number of lenses and theoretical approaches (materialist, kinesthetic, haptic, synesthetic) that engage objects as radical sites of encounter, activated through religious and ritual praxis, and negotiated with not just the eyes, but a multiplicity of senses.
The first full-length study to engage contemporary art that has emerged out of the embodied experience of pilgrimage, Imaging Pilgrimage is an important and timely addition to the field of material and visual culture of religion. It is essential reading for anyone interested in pilgrimage studies, material culture, and the place of religion within contemporary art.

Описание: Geographies of Affect in Contemporary Literature and Visual Culture opens a dialogue between the literary and filmic works produced in Central Europe and in the Anglophone world. It relies on the concept of translocality to explore this corpus, offering new readings of contemporary Hungarian films as well as urban fiction and poetry in English. Calling attention to the role of affect in imagining city space, the volume investigates Gyorgy Palfi’s Taxidermia, Bela Tarr’s Family Nest, Teju Cole’s Open City, Toni Morrison’s Jazz, China Mieville’s Un Lun Dun, Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah, and Patrick Neate’s City of Tiny Lights, among many other urban narratives. Contributors examine both widely explored emotions and under-researched affects, such as shame, fascination, and the role of withdrawal in contemporary literature and culture.
