Описание: This holistic, comprehensive analysis of recent research on reflective practices in TESOL demonstrates how the practice has been embraced within TESOL and how it continues to impact the field. This book is an original compendium of essential research on philosophy and principles, instruments used in studies, and theory and practice.
Society is becoming increasingly multi-lingual and this presents monolingual professionals, particularly those in special education and speech pathology, with severe problems. Is the language delay in a child from a bilingual environment a result of this background or is there a specific speech problem? Is a child's poor performance in school due to his problems of coping with two languages, or does he need remedial teaching?
Originally published in 1984, this book is not concerned with second language learning, but with speech and learning difficulties in bilingual children as they are presented to remedial teachers, psychologists and speech therapists. To this end the first group of specially written articles deals with the patterns of language usage in bilingual communities and the social and psychological factors which shape these patterns; with processes in normal bilingual language acquisition; and with the relationship between cognitive development and growing up with two languages. Management issues and methods involved in helping children with language problems are also tackled: they include taking case histories, family liaison, counselling, bilingual programmes, mother tongue teaching, curriculum development and the training of personnel to work in the bilingual-bicultural field.
This book provided a great deal of practical help, in a field that was relatively new at the time of writing, and helped to enlighten readers on the issues involved and assist in crystalising thought and directing future research.
The author investigates the development of children raised bilingually or multilingually. Parents and caregivers completed a questionnaire, providing information on 36 children growing up with two or more languages. Their responses indicate that bilingual and multilingual children usually develop as well as their monolingual peers, and sometimes even better. Some drawbacks of early bilingualism or multilingualism, such as a slight delay in the onset of speech production or asymmetrical language competences, are compensated for by several benefits of early acquisition of two or more mother tongues and early contacts with two or more cultures.

Picturebooks, understood as a series of meaningful text-picture relations, are increasingly acknowledged as an autonomous sub-genre of children's literature. Being highly complex aesthetic products, their use is deeply embedded in specific situations of joint attention between a caregiver and a child. This volume focuses on the question of what children may learn from looking at picturebooks, whether printed in a book format, created in a digital format, or self-produced by educationalists and researchers.
Interest in the relationship between cognitive processes and children's literature is growing rapidly, and in this book, theoretical frameworks such as cognitive linguistics, cognitive narratology, cognitive poetics, and cognitive psychology, have been applied to the analysis of children's literature. Chapters gather empirical research from the fields of literary studies, linguistics and cognitive psychology together for the first time to build a cohesive understanding of how picturebooks assist learning and development. International contributions explore:
language acquisition
the child's cognitive development
emotional development
literary acquisition ("literary literacy")
visual literacy.
Divided into three parts considering symbol-based learning, co-constructed learning, and learning language skills, this cross-disciplinary volume will appeal to researchers, students and professionals engaged in children's literature and literacy studies, as well as those from the fields of cognitive and developmental psychology, linguistics, and education.

Chapter 1. Introduction
This chapter will introduce the main theoretical and conceptual structure of the book and will offer a summary of the different chapters that follow. This chapter will introduce the reader to the main theme of the book and the various issues that are addressed. This chapter will also present the main theory of the book which will be fleshed out later.
Chapter 2. How the brain becomes bilingual: Evolution, adaptation and sustenance
This chapter will deal with the evolution of bilingualism in human language use from anthropological, neuroscience and cognitive perspectives. The chapter will show that during evolution and migration the brain adopted bilingualism for economic, cultural as well as cognitive reasons. The chapter will also discuss theories and facts related to language evolution from an evolutionary psychological perspective. The main purpose will be to show that current links between the practice of widespread bilingualism in different cultures and its cognitive consequences on the brain functions have evolutionary advantages.
Chapter 3. The psycholinguistic basis of bilingualism
This chapter will flesh out the various important psycholinguistic facts pertaining to bilingual language use to show that the extent and duration of language use leads to noticeable changes in other cognitive abilities. Data from both children and adult bilingualism will be discussed pertaining to the links between language switching and cognitive underpinnings.
Chapter 4. The multimodal basis of bilingual cognition
Recent evidence suggests that both linguistic and non-linguistic information interact dynamically to produce cognition. This chapter will present and discuss findings that indicate that bilinguals use both verbal and visual cues to process languages and participate in communication.
Chapter 5. Action control and cognition: The role of bilingualism
This chapter will defend the thesis that language use is primarily a work of cognitive action that humans constantly exert on their environment to produce successful cognition. For bilinguals, this is more complex since they have to tackle duality often and reduce conflict. The chapter will discuss important theories of attention and executive control that have influenced discussion on bilingualism and cognitive control. The chapter will approach the cognitive architecture of bilingual language use from the point of theories of action control. Both behavioral and neuroscience data will be presented. The chapter will show that both the psychological and psycholinguistic nature of action control influences the executive control system of the brain significantly and which in turn is manifested differently for monolinguals and bilinguals
Chapter 6: Tasks, theories, interpretations and controversies: The case of bilingual cognitive advantage
This chapter will offer a comprehensive account of different current theories and proposals on the possible influences of bilingualism on cognitive control. The chapter will discuss different tasks and methods that researchers have used to study both the psycholinguistic and cognitive aspects of bilingual language control and controversies. The chapter will show that observed advantages or null results on the issue of bilingual cognitive advantage is largely task dependent and is influenced by factors pertaining to individual cognitive profiles. This chapter will also deal with the various sides of the current controversies that relate to replication issues and issues related to factors that have not been controlled by researchers. The chapter will look into the issue of linguistic and cultural differences between bilingual samples that have been compared.
Chapter 7: The linguistic and non-linguistic interface in bilinguals
