Описание: to a Research Project Ernest W. Burgess Abstract The aggregation of urban population has been described by B?cher and Weber. A soc- logical study of the growth of the city, however, is concerned with the de nition and description of processes, as those of (a) expansion, (b) metabolism, and (c) mobility. The typical tendency of urban growth is the expansion radially from its central business district by a series of concentric circles, as (a) the central business district, (b) a zone of deterioration, (c) a zone of workingmen’s homes, (d)a residential area, and (e) a commuters’ zone. Urban growth may be even more fundamentally stated as the resultant of processes of organization and disorganization, like the anabolic and katabolic processes of metabolism in the human body. The distribution of population into the natural areas of the city, the division of labor, the differentiation into social and cultural groupings, represent the normal manifestations of urban metabolism, as statistics of disease, crime, disorder, vice, insanity, and suicide are rough indexes of its abnormal expression. The state of metabolism of the city may, it is suggested, be measured by mobility, de ned as a change of movement in response to a new stimulus or situation. Areas in the city of the greatest mobility are found to be also regions of juvenile delinquency, boys’ gangs, crime, poverty, wife desertion, divorce, abandoned infants, etc.

Автор: Hammelman Colleen Название: Greening Cities by Growing Food: A Political Ecology Analysis of Urban Agriculture in the Americas ISBN: 3030882950 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783030882952 Издательство: Springer Рейтинг: Цена: 121110.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: This book examines how urban agriculture (UA) is valued in the sustainable city. Through a comparative examination of UA projects in four cities across the Americas – Rosario, Argentina; Toronto, Canada; Medell?n, Colombia; and Charlotte, USA – the book illustrates local manifestations of the socio-ecological dimensions of the global food system, and traces theoretical and empirical explanations for the impact of global political economic structures (sustainable neoliberalism) on local efforts to promote social and environmental goals through UA. The study contributes to literature on UA, sustainability, and urban geography through examining the ability of marginalized communities to compete for land on which to grow produce in contribution to their food security, livelihoods, communities, and environments, and will be of interest to UA practitioners, students, and scholars of geography, sociology, sustainability studies, environmental studies, and food studies. This project is distinctive for its global - local orientation that uses local cases to shed light on global phenomena relating to sustainability, neoliberalism, and policy mobilities. It is also important for its qualitative approach to understanding the perceived value of UA. Throughout the research, stakeholders emphasized the qualitative values of UA (such as social integration for new immigrants) that are not easily captured in statistical representations of the economic value of a given piece of urban land. As such, this book seeks to contribute to understanding about the contributions UA makes to a city beyond the food produced, and fill gaps in literature regarding the local manifestations of global policy in UA projects seeking to address both sustainability and social justice objectives.

Описание: Some people hold the view that biotechnology will solve the food shortages experienced in many parts of Africa, however, there is an opposing viewpoint that Africa may become a dumping ground for technology that has not been acceptable in other parts of the world. The ethical issues in agriculture in Africa do not focus only on biotechnology.

Описание: Crops need air, sun, water, and soil to thrive. When it comes to soil, however, quality usually trumps quantity. Rich and fertile land boasts a healthy mixture of phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen, along with water, air, and soil microorganisms that break down organic matter. Soil is an incredibly complex substance. It has physical and chemical properties that allow it to sustain living organisms -- not just plant roots and earthworms, but hundreds of thousands of different insects, wormlike creatures and micro-organisms. When these organisms are in balance, soil cycles nutrients efficiently, stores water and drains the excess, and maintains an environment in which plants can thrive. Plant nutrition is only one of more than fifty factors which directly affect both crop yield and quality. The availability of required nutrients, together with the degree of interaction between these nutrients and the soil, play a vital role in crop development. A deficiency in any one required nutrient or, a soil condition that limits or prevents a metabolic function from occurring can limit plant growth. A soil nutrient management plan should include analysing soil deficiencies to determine the type, application rate, application interval, and the placement of any nutrients required to optimise short and long term productivity. Soil nutrient management involves not only the physical properties and mineral structure of the soil, but also the balance between soil pathogens and beneficial microbes. Beneficial microbes increase nutrient availability, reduce disease, reduce nutrient losses, and help degrade toxic compounds. This book provides a basic introduction to the biological, chemical, and physical properties affecting soil fertility and plant nutrition. The advances in the field of soil fertility are described in this book along with information regarding nutrient management.

Описание: Grasslands comprise the largest and most diverse set of ecosystems in the United States and are among the most extensive in the world. Characterized by scanty rainfall, these western grasslands are too dry for crop production and are used almost exclusively for grazing livestock. The grasslands on the western edge of the Great Plains, known as the shortgrass region, support some unique species of plants and animals as well as some common to other rangeland ecosystems. Invertebrate plant pests, native vertebrate foragers, and weeds can adversely affect the efficient management of this economically and ecologically important region. The contributors–ecologists, entomologists, range scientists, vertebrate biologists, and economists–synthesize and review the available information on shortgrass rangelands, offering the first comprehensive treatment of pest management and ecology within this vital ecosystem.
