Описание: This is the first, and long awaited work on critical approaches to teaching English for the purposes of democracy and social justice that challenges the current views of ELT, such as English being merely a tool for communication or the acquisition of basic skills or high test scores for advancement in education and the marketplace. - A timely work and a fresh look at critical approaches to ELT in Asia. - An invaluable work that simultaneously problematizes current ELT practices while introducing new possibilities for critical practices in localized contexts in Asia. - An important work that shines a light on how the forces of globalization not only dictate the spread of English as an international language, but how these forces also dictate what is taught and how. - An informative view on how ELT practices are being re-envisioned by critical educators in Asia. This groundbreaking volume, compiling critical perspectives of English language teaching in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, and Sri Lanka, confronts colonial legacies observed in educational practices and policies that perpetuate a divide between the privileged and the underprivileged. - The critical reflections scrutinize the nature of English as a commodified gatekeeper and simultaneously provide alternative visions for language education.

KakaoTalk and Facebook: Korean American Youth Constructing Hybrid Identities explores the role smartphones play in the lives of Korean American youth as they explore their identities and navigate between fitting into their host society and their Korean heritage. Employing multiple methodologies, this book gives voice to the youth’s personal experiences, identity struggles, and creative digital media practices. While similar in many aspects to other American youth, they also differ greatly in the central roles that their smartphones’ use plays in maintaining their mastery of the Korean language, connecting to Korean pop culture, and cultivating their social networks with other co-ethnic peers and homeland relatives and friends. The results of this study challenge traditional assumptions about assimilation of second generation immigrants into a host society and suggest that digital technologies facilitate the process of segmented assimilation, according to which ethnic identities continue to play a central role in the identity of children of immigrants. KakaoTalk and Facebook will be of great interest to scholars and educators of media and youth and those exploring how digital media have changed the nature of immigration processes in dramatic ways.
Today, between 10 and 12 million Roma live in Europe, comprising the continent's largest ethnic minority. However, only 1% participate in higher education. Although the Roma are widely dispersed across Europe, and beyond, they face similar social, political, and economic challenges throughout the continent. A major site of struggle has been access, attendance and achievement in the education sector for Gypsies, Roma and Travellers (GRT). This groundbreaking text explores the Roma in higher education, a topic of great importance since higher education is considered to be a significant pathway out of poverty and to social mobility.
Why are participation rates so low? What are the barriers and what are the enablers? This edited collection brings together authors from diverse national and organisational locations including academics, activists and policymakers from Canada, Chile, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, the UK, and the USA. They share and critically analyse contemporary knowledge on research, policies, practices and interventions to promote Roma participation in higher education in a range of European locations. They cover key topics including the representation of Roma communities as living on the margins, but also racism, anti-Gypsyism, Romaphobia, hate crimes and discriminatory practices. The book offers insights into how to fight discrimination and re-distribute higher educational opportunities without objectifying the Roma or representing these rich and diverse communities merely as powerless victims.
