Описание:

What would it be like if your existence was erased for half a century? This is the reality for the Korean comfort girls-women whose lives had been erased since the time of the expansion of comfort stations by the Japanese military in 1937. This book is an effort to bring these women back to life and to make their voices, experiences and memories available to future generations. The experiences of Korean comfort girls-women are a paradigmatic example of how military sexual violence can obliterate the dignity of women and shame them into nonexistence. This book examines how the turning of their innocence into inadequacy, actively by the Japanese government and passively by the Korean government and its people, and also by the world, compounded their long, miserable suffering for half a century until Kim Hak-sun broke the silence in 1991 with the support of Korean activists. The relentless and courageous efforts of Korean comfort girls-women and activists on the road to healing and justice are shared here. These efforts made it possible for us to hear their horrific stories, which are embedded with numerous and intense traumas, allowing them to unfold and be shared on the road to justice and healing.

Описание: Both famous in their day, Daisy Bates and Ernestine Hill were bestselling writers who told of life in the vast Australian interior. Daisy Bates, dressed in Victorian garb, malnourished and half-blind, camped with Aboriginal people in Western Australia and on the Nullarbor for decades, surrounded by her books, notes and artefacts. A self-taught ethnologist, desperate to be accepted by established male anthropologists, she sought to document the language and customs of the people who visited her camps. In 1935, Ernestine Hill, journalist and author of the bestselling book, The Great Australian Loneliness, coaxed Daisy Bates to Adelaide to collaborate on a newspaper series for The Advertiser. Their collaboration resulted in the 1938 international bestseller, The Passing of the Aborigines. This book informed popular opinion about Aboriginal people for decades, though Bates’s failure to acknowledge Hill as her co-author strained their friendship. Traversing great distances in a campervan, Eleanor Hogan reflects on the lives and work of these indefatigable women. From a contemporary perspective, their work seems quaint and sentimental, their outlook and preoccupations dated, paternalistic and even racist. Yet Hogan is reminded that Bates and Hill took a genuine interest in Aboriginal people and their cultures long before they were considered worthy of the Australian mainstream’s attention. With sensitivity and insight, she wonders whether their work speaks to us today and what their legacies as fearless female outliers might be.

Описание: Like a human tsunami, World War II brought two million American servicemen to the South Pacific where they left a human legacy of some thousands of children. Mothers' Darlings traces the intimate relationships that existed in the wartime South Pacific between U.S. servicemen and Indigenous women, and considers the fate of the resulting children. The American military command carefully managed intimate relationships in the Pacific Theater, applying U.S. immigration law based on race on Pacific peoples of color to prevent marriage ""across the color line."" For Indigenous women and their American servicemen sweethearts, legal marriage was impossible, giving rise to a generation of children known as ""G.I. Babies."" Among these Pacific war children, one thing common to almost all is the longing to know more about their American father. Mothers' Darlings traces these children's stories of loss, emotion, longing, and identity, and of lives lived in the shadow of global war. This book considers the way these relationships developed in the major U.S. bases of the South Pacific Command from Bora Bora in the east across to Solomon Islands in the west, and from the Gilbert Islands in the north to New Zealand, in the southernmost region of the Pacific. Some chapters consider in-depth case studies of the life trajectories of one or two people; others are more of a group portrait. Each discusses the context of the particular island societies and how this often determined the way such intimate relationships developed and were accommodated during the war years and beyond. The writers interviewed many of the children of the Americans and some of the few surviving mothers as well as others who recalled the wartime presence in their islands. Oral histories reveal what the records of colonial governments and the military largely have ignored, providing a perspective on the effects of the U.S. occupation that until now has been disregarded by historians of the Pacific war. The richness of this book should appeal to those interested the Pacific, World War II, as well as intimacy, family, race relations, colonialism, identity, and the legal structures of U.S. immigration. Some of the participants in this rich study also told their stories on film—Born of Conflict: Children of the Pacific War.

Описание: Save Our Sons tells for the first time the full story of the Save Our Sons movement of Australian women who banded together to oppose conscription during the Vietnam War. In 1965, angered by the Menzies governments decision to conscript young men to fight in the Vietnam War, a group of Sydney housewives issued a national distress call - SOS - to mothers everywhere. Their clarion call was answered by women across Australia, who formed groups of their own in Townsville, Brisbane, Newcastle, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Of varying ages, backgrounds and religious and political persuasions, they united under the Save Our Sons banner, determined to end the so-called lottery of death. In 1965, nobody envisaged this would take eight long years, or that some would be jailed in the process. SOS members initially stood out as respectable voices of middle-class dissent in their sensible shoes, hats and gloves, but as the war dragged on some became more radical: staging sit-ins at government buildings, chaining themselves to Canberras Parliament House, wearing anti-war fashions to the Melbourne Cup, hijacking an evangelical rally, and organising an underground to hide draft resisters. In 1971, the jailing of five Melbourne SOS mums over Easter sparked national outrage, and was seen by some as a turning point in the anti-war campaign. Set against a backdrop of percolating social change in Australia, Save Our Sons is the first national history of the SOS movement and those who answered its call.

Описание: What was it like to be involved in the heady days of second wave feminism in Australia, when the role of women at home and at work changed decisively? Iola Mathews was one of the founders of the Womens Electoral Lobby, a journalist at The Age, and later a leading ACTU advocate for women workers during the Accord with the Hawke-Keating Government. She was one of the first generation of women trying to have it all with a career and children. In this honest and revealing memoir, she takes us inside the day-to-day groundwork required to bring about reforms in areas like affirmative action, equal pay, superannuation, childcare, parental leave and work-family issues. This is an important record of a pivotal time for women in Australias history. Iola brings wisdom and experience to it, reflecting on where we are today, with suggestions for further reform. Its a vital source for policy makers and all those interested in women, work and families.

Описание: This publication provides insights on how trade can be leveraged to enhance economic opportunities for women in the Pacific. It includes an analysis of how gender mainstreaming in Aid for Trade programs could catalyze greater donor support to help the region benefit from gender-equitable and truly inclusive growth. In the Pacific, the labor force participation gap between men and women has narrowed, but women there are still less likely to be in work than men. To tap into the full potential of the female labor force in the region, much more needs to be done to boost women’s economic empowerment.

Описание: The young Cara Mallett, an orphan from a working class background in rural England, emigrated to the colony of NSW in the late Victorian era. She proved to be pioneer, establishing the first college in NSW to train women teachers. Her adventurous spirit met its match in a lifelong partnership with another emigre, T W Edgeworth David, a young mining surveyor. Settling in Sydney when Edgeworth David was appointed as Professor of Geology at Sydney University, the couple raised a family there while actively engaged with many aspects of Sydneys cultural and political life. Cara Davids staunch feminism was to see her rise to leadership in one of the first significant political campaigns by women, the temperance movement. Sharing her husbands adventurous spirit, she accompanied him on a scientific expedition to a coral island and to geology camps in the Snowy Mountains. During the Great War, Cara ran a convalescent home for soldiers in the Blue Mountains and a land army hostel in Scotland. After the war she played an influential role in the new Girl Guides movement. Caras two daughters grew up strongly influenced by this capable, warm-hearted and energetic woman, and both forged their own creative pathways. Margaret David became an independent politician and community activist before her tragic early death in a plane crash; Molly David became a respected author and environmentalist.

Описание: Caroline Kearney’s husband bequeathed her a heart-breaking dilemma. Writing his will as he lay dying in Melbourne in 1865, Edward Kearney promised his wife ?100 a year and more to educate their sons, but only if she moved to Ireland with their six children and lived in a house that her brothers-in-law would choose and furnish. Caroline (n?e Bax) had never been to Ireland. Edward had left as a young man. Why were these his final wishes? How did this young widow respond to such a draconian exercise of male power from the grave? Could a husband legally force his widow to migrate against her wishes? Caroline’s Dilemma follows Caroline and Edward’s migration histories from Britain and Ireland to Australia, their marriage, and their experiences running sheep stations on Aboriginal land in South Australia and Victoria. Caroline did not want to leave Australia, leaving her own parents and siblings behind. She contested his will in the courts and struggled against the growing influence of his Irish Catholic family. Feisty, determined and sometimes devious, she drew on the support of her family, drink and his estate to try to shape her future and that of her children. This extraordinary book combines story telling with an historian’s detective work required to bring it to light. Pieced together from evidence in archives, newspapers, genealogical sites and legal records, this book sheds new light on the workings of nineteenth-century gender and male power, family lives that span imperial sites, inheritance, migration, settler colonialism, the Irish diaspora and sectarian conflict. It shows how one middle-class woman and her family fought to shape their own lives within the British Empire and its colonies.

Описание: The revelatory story of the Bible in Australia, from the convict era to the Mabo land rights campaign, Nick Cave, the Bra Boys and beyond. Thought to be everything from the word of God to a resented imposition, the Bible has been debated, painted, rejected, translated, read, gossiped about, preached, and tattooed. At a time when public discussion of religion is deeply polarised, Meredith Lake reveals the Bible’s dynamic influence in Australia and offers an innovative new perspective on Christianity and its changing role in our society. In the hands of writers, artists, wowsers, Biblebashers, immigrants, suffragists, evangelists, unionists, Indigenous activists and many more – the Bible has played a defining and contested role in Australia. A must-read for sceptics, the curious, the lapsed, the devout, the believer and non-believer.
