Описание: This consolidated reference book addresses the various aspects of nano biomaterials used in ophthalmic drug delivery, including their characterization, interactions with ophthalmic system and applications in treatments of the ophthalmic diseases and disorders. In the last decade, a significant growth in polymer sciences, nanotechnology and biotechnology has resulted in the development of new nano- and bioengineered nano-bio-materials. These are extensively explored as drug delivery carriers as well as for implantable devices and scaffolds. At the interface between nanomaterials and biological systems, the organic and synthetic worlds merge into a new science concerned with the safe use of nanotechnology and nano material design for biological applications. For this field to evolve, there is a need to understand the dynamic forces and molecular components that shape these interactions. While it is impossible to describe with certainty all the bio physicochemical interactions at play at the interface, we are at a point where the pockets of assembled knowledge are providing a conceptual framework to guide this exploration, and review the impact on future product development. The book is intended as a valuable resource for academics and pharmaceutical scientists working in the field of polymers, polymers materials for drug delivery, drug delivery systems and ophthalmic drug delivery systems, in addition to medical and health care professionals in these areas.

Описание:

Recent advances witness the potential to employ nanomedicine and game-changing methods to deliver drug molecules directly to diseased sites.

To optimize and then enhance the efficacy and specificity, the control and guidance of drug carriers in vasculature has become crucial. Current bottlenecks in the optimal design of drug carrying particles are the lack of knowledge about the transport of particles, adhesion on endothelium wall and subsequent internalization into diseased cells. To study the transport and adhesion of particle in vasculature, the authors have made great efforts to numerically investigate the dynamic and adhesive motions of particles in the blood flow. This book discusses the recent achievements from the establishment of fundamental physical problem to development of multiscale model, and finally large scale simulations for understanding transport of particle-based drug carriers in blood flow.

Описание: In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the production of nanoscale fibers for drug delivery and tissue engineering. Nanofibres in Drug Delivery aims to outline to new researchers in the field the utility of nanofibers in drug delivery, and to explain to them how to prepare fibers in the laboratory. The book begins with a brief discussion of the main concepts in pharmaceutical science. The authors then introduce the key techniques that can be used for fiber production and explain briefly the theory behind them. They discuss the experimental implementation of fiber production, starting with the simplest possible set-up and then moving on to consider more complex arrangements. As they do so, they offer advice from their own experience of fiber production, and use examples from current literature to show how each particular type of fibers can be applied to drug delivery. They also consider how fiber production could be moved beyond the research laboratory into industry, discussing regulatory and scale-up aspects.

Описание:

Automated Drug Delivery in Anesthesia provides a full review of available tools and methods on the drug delivery of anesthesia, bridging the gap between academic development, research and clinical practice. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, pulling information about tools developed in other disciplines such as mathematics, physics, biology and system engineering and applying them to drug delivery. The book's authors discuss the missing element of complete regulatory loop of anesthesia: the sensor and model for pain pathway assessment. This is the only book which focuses specifically on the delivery of anesthesia.

Описание:

UHMWPE Biomaterials Handbook, Third Edition, describes the science, development, properties, and application of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in artificial joints. UHMWPE is now the material of choice for joint replacements, and is increasingly being used in fibers for sutures. This book is a one-stop reference for information on this advanced material, covering both introductory topics and the most advanced developments.

The third edition adds six new chapters on a range of topics, including the latest in anti-oxidant technologies for stabilizing HXLPE and up-to-date systematic reviews of the clinical literature for HXLPE in hips and knees. The book chronicles the rise and fall of all-metal hip implants, as well as the increased use of ceramic biomaterials and UHMWPE for this application. This book also brings orthopedic researchers and practitioners up to date on the stabilization of UHMWPE with antioxidants, as well as the choices of antioxidant available for practitioners.

The book also thoroughly assesses the clinical performance of HXLPE, as well as alternative bearings in knee replacement and UHMWPE articulations with polyether ether ketone (PEEK).

Written and edited by the top experts in the field of UHMWPE, this is the only state-of-the-art reference for professionals, researchers, and clinicians working with this material.

Описание: Polymers that can degrade into biologically compatible components under physiologic conditions are advantageous for the preparation of drug delivery systems (DDS). The use of biodegradable polymers precludes the need for retrieval at the conclusion of the dosing regimen, thereby avoiding the potential complications associated with the use of non-degradable systems. Homopolymers and copolymers, obtained from glycolide, lactide and caprolactone and trimethylene carbonate (TMC), are the most commonly considered drug delivery vehicles. However, there are still few implantable drug delivery systems obtained from biodegradable polymers. Attachment of drugs to high molecular weight polymers can significantly improve both tumor targeting and therapeutic efficacy due to the enhanced permeability and retention effect observed in tumour tissue. However, the commercial availability of well-defined water-soluble polymeric systems with narrow polydispersities that are biocompatible, nontoxic, and nonimmunogenic is rather limited. Even with the progress of novel materials, polyesters still endure at the controls of drug delivery technologies. The book provides comprehensive information of polyester drug delivery systems that covers a wide-ranging of materials design, manufacturing techniques, and applications. Polyglycolide (PGA) was one of the first biodegradable synthetic polymers investigated for biomedical applications and was synthesised for the first time in 1954. In the beginning, it was not considered for biomedical applications because of its thermal and hydrolytic instability. However, the ability to degrade inside the human body became a great advantage.
