Risulta esplicito, nella riflessione culturale dei principali esponenti della cerchia corazziniana, come sia necessario diventare «allievi» di una tradizione europea e come, nella ricerca di «maestri» che fornissero dignita e statuto letterario al gruppo, i simbolisti belgi, per affi nita di pensiero, atmosfere e linguaggio poetico, fossero stati individuati quali riferimenti principali. E attraverso la lettura delle loro opere che i membri del gruppo corazziniano maturano una visione «alternativa» di Roma, che se in parte risente anche delle descrizioni di altri scrittori italiani coevi, di fondo evidenzia una distanza dalle immagini classiche della capitale. Roma diviene cosi una citta dell’anima, irreale ma al tempo stesso concreta, con le sue chiese di campagna, le sue vie che ne mostrano i lati non urbani, le visioni notturne di conventi che la fanno assomigliare alle citta nordiche cantate dai simbolisti.

The conflicting views that were taken of him in the Middle East in his own time and the centuries that followed are still reflected in the tensions that exist between east and west today. The story of Alexander became the subject of legend in the medieval west, but was perhaps even more pervasive in the east. The Alexander Romance was translated into Syriac in the sixth century and may have become current in Persia as early as the third century AD. From these beginnings it reached into the Persian national epic, the Shahnameh, into Jewish traditions, and into the Quran and subsequent Arab romance. The papers in this volume all have the aim of deepening our understanding of this complex development. If we can understand better why Alexander is such an important figure in both east and west, we shall be a little closer to understanding what unites two often antipathetic worlds. This volume collects the papers delivered at the conference of the same title held at the University of Exeter from July 26-29 2010. More than half the papers were by invited speakers and were designed to provide a systematic view of the subject; the remainder were selected for their ability to carry research forward in an integrated way.

Volume 54 of ROMARD, 'Love and Romance in Early Drama', is a special volume, guest-edited by Alexandra F. Johnston and Charlotte Steenbrugge. It features eight contributions by established scholars and early career researchers, looking at the various complex aspects of the representation of human love and the use of the romance genre, from Hrotsvit of Gandersheim to Mucedorus and from Le Poulier six personnages (The Chicken Coop for Six Characters) to The Merchant of Venice. The essays in this volume all demonstrate the significance of romance, both as a genre and a theme, for medieval and early modern drama and will hopefully stimulate greater interest in this multifaceted area of research. We have also included an edition and verse translation of an early modern French farce in the hope that this will encourage scholars, students, and theatre practitioners to stage these fascinating and eminently performable plays that use 'love' in a different, but compelling, way.
