Winner of a 2016 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award!
A recent article published in the Journal of Patient Safety estimated that more than 400,000 lives are lost each year due to preventable patient events in American hospitals. Preventable patient safety events are the third leading cause of death in the United States. While most health care organizations know they need to improve patient safety, most lack an understanding of the steps required to develop and implement an effective patient safety program.
Baylor Scott & White Health has successfully created a strong culture of patient safety. In 2013, Baylor Health Care System published the book Achieving STEEEP Health Care, which describes its quality improvement journey via the STEEEP framework of delivering care that is Safe, Timely, Effective, Efficient, Equitable, and Patient-centered. This book provides a detailed overview of the Baylor Scott & White Health approach to the delivery of safe care, the leading aim of the STEEEP quality and patient safety framework. It presents real-life examples, practical approaches, and tools for improving patient safety. The book is structured around some of the key components of patient safety such as the importance of strategic efforts in categories of culture, processes, and technology. Maintaining a focus on human factors in patient safety and health care, the book explains the need for advanced analytics along with long-term learning and corporate resources. This book describes how to develop appropriate goals, formulate strategies to meet those goals, and implement techniques to improve patient safety based on the experience of Baylor Scott & White Health.

Описание: Process Redesign for Health Care Using Lean Thinking is a response to a simple, but hard to answer, question and is the result of the experiences of a working doctor who was also the chief safety and quality officer of an Australian teaching hospital. At this hospital, he observed that the Emergency Department was staff by talented, well-trained, and respected doctors and nurses. The facilities were modern, and the work load unexceptional, but the department was close to melt down. Bad things were happening to patients, everyone was blaming each other, lots of things had been tried but nothing was getting better and no one could explain why. The problem was not a lack of technical knowledge or expertise, the problem was that no one stood back and said, "what’s the best way to move 200 or 300 patients a day through the complicated and varying, sequence of steps needed to sort out the many different problems that bring patients to our department?" These challenges are faced by hospitals and health services all over the world. There are difficulties with patient flow, congestion, queues, inefficient utilization of resources, problems engaging clinical staff in improvement programs, adverse incidents, and budget constraints. Lean thinking and value stream analysis gives hospitals and health services struggling with these issues the insights they need to help themselves. This book provides a method that systematically turns those insights into working programs of service and system redesign. The book is divided into two sections. The first section gives the background to the approach, and systematically works through the Process Redesign methodology, step-by-step. The second section is a series of case studies that show the methodology in action, what worked and what didn’t work. The goal of any process redesign is simple: the right care, for the right person, at the right time, in the right place, and right the first time. This book helps the people who work in hospitals and health services realize these goals by working together.

Achieving health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered (STEEEP) is not an endpoint, but a journey. This journey requires a commitment to quality improvement (QI) from the highest levels of leadership combined with the interdependent development of several key components of health care delivery: administration and governance, clinical leadership, quality programs and expertise, data analytics, and accreditation. As each organization travels along its journey, these components must evolve at a common pace. With each component of a given phase of the quality journey firmly developed, the organization can expect to advance to the next phase knowing that the requisite factors are aligned.
Winner of a 2015 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) has formalized its commitment to quality with the adoption of the STEEEP framework supporting the Institute of Medicine's call for health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered. This Shingo Prize-winning guide book is a companion to BSWH's recent book Achieving STEEEP Health Care. It presents practical approaches and tools, including sample workflows, forms, charters, and checklists, that health care delivery organizations can use to organize, lead, execute, and measure the impact of their own improvement efforts. BSWH has traveled the QI journey during its 100 years as the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the U.S. With a history of visionary care, its aim is to help others achieve the highest levels of quality and safety for their patients. Описание: Happiness, wellbeing, relaxation, and rejuvenation are among the many concepts associated with tourism and more recently have become the focus for a number of tourism researchers. Medical tourism or health tourism provider offer complete information on medical facilities, service providers, medical professionals, travel agencies, resorts, medical/travel insurance overseas as well as of local areas. Millions of medical travelers travel overseas for their medical, dental, and cosmetic procedures. A health tourism provider or medical tourism provider is an organisation or a company which seeks to bring together a prospective patient with a service provider, usually a hospital or a clinic. If the patient is crossing international borders to obtain medical care, then that individual would usually be known as a medical tourist. These groups are generally facilitators and developers of medical tourism, which brings into play a number of issues that do not apply when a patient stays within their own country of origin. Health tourism providers make information available about the hospitals, clinic and the doctors that they are partnered with, but the nature, extent and quality of the information provided by different organisations and companies working in this field varies enormously. A spa offering on-site natural mineral, thermal, or sea water, which is used in professionally administered hydrotherapy treatments. This spa typifies the spa product offering focusing on health and wellness. The concept of well-being, for example, especially the subjective wellbeing of those who travel, has recently received empirical attention in tourism studies. This book, Health, Tourism and Hospitality: Spas, Wellness and Medical Travel, takes an in-depth and comprehensive look at the growing health, wellness and medical tourism sectors in a global context. The book analyses the history and development of the industries, the way in which they are managed and organised, the expanding range of new and innovative products and trends, and the marketing of destinations, products and services.

Medical and health tourism is a significant area of growth in the export of medical, health and tourism services. Although spas and improved well-being have long been part of the tourist experience, health tourism now includes travel for medical purposes ranging from cosmetic and dental surgery through to transplants and infertility treatment. Many countries including China, Cuba, Hungary, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore actively promote and compete for the medical tourist dollar, while many developed countries also provide niche private services. However, the field of medical tourism is increasingly being subject to scrutiny and debate, particularly as a result of concerns over regulatory, ethical and wider health issues.
Drawing on a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives, this book is one of the first to critically address the substantial political, philosophical and ethical issues that arise out of the transnational practices of medical tourism. Through a series of chapters the book engages with key issues such as the role of regulatory and policy structures in influencing medical and health tourism related mobilities. These issues are investigated by considering range of developing and developed countries, medical systems and health economic perspectives.
The book adopts a multi-layered perspective to not only investigate the business and marketing practices of medical and health tourism but places these within a broader framework of contemporary globalisation, policy and practice. By doing so it opens up debate of the ethical space in which medical and health tourism operates as well as reinforce the wide ranging perspectives that exist on the subject in both the public and academic imagination.
This significant contribution will be of interest to students, academics in tourism and medical policy, trade and economic development fields.
