Описание: Following a protracted research and development phase, Mikoyan Gurevich’s MiG-23 finally entered service with the former Soviet Air Force in the early 1970s. Almost immediately, a number of foreign customers pressed Moscow for deliveries of this long-overdue type, expected to succeed the popular MiG-21 as a standard interceptor. Correspondingly, large numbers of MiG-23 interceptors and fighter-bombers were exported to five major Arab air forces in the mid-1970s. This is a detailed history of the operational service of this Soviet-manufactured interceptor and its fighter-bomber variants in service with Algerian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Libyan, and Syrian air forces, since 1974. While Egypt purchased only a handful before its final break with Moscow, and Algeria limited related acquisitions, Iraq, Libya and Syria continued purchasing advanced variants in significant numbers through the 1980s. The units operating MiG-23s were soon transformed into the backbone of the military services in question, and they saw combat service in a number of intensive military conflicts. In the 1980s, they fought against Israeli jets over Lebanon, against the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq War, and confronted US Navy’s F-14s on numerous occasions off Libya. In 1991 Iraqi MiG-23s were deployed in combat against the US-led coalition’s F-15s. Indeed, in Syria, different versions of MiG-23 continue flying combat operations today. Illustrated with over 110 photographs – many of these never published before –colour profiles and a dozen maps, this volume provides a unique point of reference, revealing much detail about camouflage patterns, unit insignia and aircraft markings.

Автор: Hone Trent Название: Learning War: The Evolution of Fighting Doctrine in the U.S. The five decades between the Spanish-American War and the end of World War II were a time of revolutionary technological change. Navies struggled to assimilate newship types-dreadnought battleships, destroyers, aircraft carriers, and submarines and integrate them with new technologies, like analog fire control computers, radio, andradar. The U.S. Navy stood out in its ability to harness these new technologies and develop them to expand the fleet's fighting power. Between 1898 and 1945, the Navyevolved from a second-tier force to the world's strongest naval power. This transition was far more than an increase in size; victory in World War II taxed the Navy's capabilities to the limit. The Navy's rise to dominance was the result of its ability to learn and innovate.Learning War examines the Navy's doctrinal development throughout the 1898-1945 period and explains why it was so successful at embracing change. It is a revolutionary study of one of history's greatest success stories. It draws profoundly important conclusions that give new insight, not only into how the Navy succeeded in becoming the best, but also into how modern organizations can exploit today's rapid technological and social changes in their pursuit of success.Learning War argues that the Navy created a sophisticated learning system in the early years of the twentieth century that led to repeated innovations in the development of surface warfare tactics and doctrine. The conditions that allowedthese innovations to emerge are analyzed by considering the Navy as a complex adaptive system. Complexity has provided new perspectives for understanding in a variety of fields, including biology, economics, artificial intelligence, and international development. Learning War is the first major work to apply this approach to militaryhistory. It permits a richer understanding of the mechanisms that enable human organizations to evolve, innovate, and learn. These mechanisms are very important. In the Navy's case, the learning continued through the early years of World War II. Contrary to the standard view of military doctrine-that it changes in peacetime and is employed in wartime-this book makes the argument that the ability to modify doctrine in light of experience is crucial to wartime success. Organizations must evolve to be able to meet changing circumstances. This is true of all human organizations, military, business, or otherwise. The Navy's experience in the early twentieth century provides a window into how this kind of evolutionary change can be fostered and maintained.

Автор: Robert M. Dienesch Название: Eyeing the Red Storm: Eisenhower and the First Attempt to Build a Spy Satellite ISBN: 0803255721 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780803255722 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 33400.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: In 1954 the U.S. Air Force launched an ambitious program known as WS-117L to develop the world’s first reconnaissance satellite. The goal was to take photographic images from space and relay them back to Earth via radio. Because of technical issues and bureaucratic resistance, however, WS-117L was seriously behind schedule by the time Sputnik orbited Earth in 1957 and was eventually cancelled. The air force began concentrating instead on new programs that eventually launched the first successful U.S. spy satellites.
Eyeing the Red Storm examines the birth of space-based reconnaissance not from the perspective of CORONA (the first photo reconnaissance satellite to fly) but rather from that of the WS-117L. Robert M. Dienesch’s revised assessment places WS-117L within the larger context of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency, focusing on the dynamic between military and civilian leadership. Dienesch demonstrates how WS-117L promised Eisenhower not merely military intelligence but also the capacity to manage national security against the Soviet threat. As a fiscal conservative, Eisenhower believed a strong economy was the key to surviving the Cold War and saw satellite reconnaissance as a means to understand the Soviet military challenge more clearly and thus keep American defense spending under control.
Although WS-117L never flew, it provided the foundation for all subsequent satellites, breaking theoretical barriers and helping to overcome major technical hurdles, which ensured the success of America’s first working reconnaissance satellites and their photographic missions during the Cold War.

Описание: As a unique, distant geographical region of the United States, Alaska has evolved from military insignificance to high strategic priority in the 142 years since its purchase from Russia in 1867. The reasons for this dramatic shift derive from a correlation of geography, foreign policy, domestic politics, and military technology.Historically the role of the armed forces in Alaska has been large and diverse. Alaska was one of the two principal territorial purchases made by the United States between 1803 and 1867 adding nearly 1.5 million square miles to America’s national domain. Smaller by the size of Texas than Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase, Alaska, unlike all of the territories and states carved out of the former, languished in obscurity and isolation, and was administered as a colonial dependency by the military and other branches of the federal government, its official ‘territorial status’ and government notwithstanding. While sharing many common aspects of frontier settlement and Western history with territories such as Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Colorado, Alaska presented special challenges peculiar to a non-contiguous arctic and sub-Arctic environment, separated from the United States by a foreign power. Indeed, only the defeated South under Reconstruction experienced the same degree of military occupation and martial law.Alaska also has the unique distinction in the American experience of belonging to Imperial Russia before it became of interest to American expansionists. Still others found Alaska tempting and pursued their own designs North of '53. The Spanish, British, Canadians, and even the French plied Alaska’s waters and made their claims to Alyeska- the Great Land. And it is with these clashing imperial ambitions that this three-volume history begins.
