Описание: The five decades between the Spanish-American War and the end of World War II were a time of revolutionary technological change. Navies struggled to assimilate newship types-dreadnought battleships, destroyers, aircraft carriers, and submarines and integrate them with new technologies, like analog fire control computers, radio, andradar. The U.S. Navy stood out in its ability to harness these new technologies and develop them to expand the fleet's fighting power. Between 1898 and 1945, the Navyevolved from a second-tier force to the world's strongest naval power. This transition was far more than an increase in size; victory in World War II taxed the Navy's capabilities to the limit. The Navy's rise to dominance was the result of its ability to learn and innovate.Learning War examines the Navy's doctrinal development throughout the 1898-1945 period and explains why it was so successful at embracing change. It is a revolutionary study of one of history's greatest success stories. It draws profoundly important conclusions that give new insight, not only into how the Navy succeeded in becoming the best, but also into how modern organizations can exploit today's rapid technological and social changes in their pursuit of success.Learning War argues that the Navy created a sophisticated learning system in the early years of the twentieth century that led to repeated innovations in the development of surface warfare tactics and doctrine. The conditions that allowedthese innovations to emerge are analyzed by considering the Navy as a complex adaptive system. Complexity has provided new perspectives for understanding in a variety of fields, including biology, economics, artificial intelligence, and international development. Learning War is the first major work to apply this approach to militaryhistory. It permits a richer understanding of the mechanisms that enable human organizations to evolve, innovate, and learn. These mechanisms are very important. In the Navy's case, the learning continued through the early years of World War II. Contrary to the standard view of military doctrine-that it changes in peacetime and is employed in wartime-this book makes the argument that the ability to modify doctrine in light of experience is crucial to wartime success. Organizations must evolve to be able to meet changing circumstances. This is true of all human organizations, military, business, or otherwise. The Navy's experience in the early twentieth century provides a window into how this kind of evolutionary change can be fostered and maintained.

Описание: Synopsis: In prison his name had been Peter Marlow. When British Intelligence released him to impersonate a dangerous KGB agent, he became George Graham, a man with an incredible past, and with a very questionable future. But even the British didn't know everything about Graham. There were secrets within secrets, as Marlow discovered. Then he came face to face with George Graham's mistress and thought the game was up. But it was just the beginning ... 'Joe Hone is a marvelously compelling, acute and subtle writer of spy novels. The “Peter Marlow” sequence should be rediscovered and acclaimed as enduring classics of the genre.' William Boyd 'Intelligent, sharp and deviously plotted ... Here is a new force in the field of spy stories.' Daily Telegraph 'Unusual, thinking man's thriller ... with echoes of writers like Greene and le Carre and a continual convincing atmosphere of uneasy menace and grey betrayal.' Sunday Express 'Joseph Hone's The Sixth Directorate ... is one of the best suspense novels of the last ten years. It has elegance, wit, sympathy, irony, surprise, action, a rueful love affair and a melancholy 'Decline of the West' mood. Only the crimes in its pages separate the book from what is known as serious novels.' Anatole Broyard, New York Times 'Fast, sophisticated, splendidly authentic, Joseph Hone writes like an angel about devil's work.' Charles McCarry This is the second of Joseph Hone's Peter Marlow's spy novels, the other three being The Private Sector, The Valley of the Fox and The Flowers of the Forest. All are being reissued in Faber Finds.

Описание: Synopsis: Eric Ambler, John Buchan, Erskine Childers, Arthur Conan Doyle, Joseph Conrad, Len Deighton, Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsyth, Graham Greene, Geoffrey Household, John le Carre, Robert Ludlum and Joseph Hone. What do they have in common? They wrote spy thrillers and all have appeared in a recent survey of the fifty best books in that genre. Although he may be the least known, the inclusion of Joseph Hone was not eccentric. The particular title chosen was The Private Sector, the first of his Peter Marlow titles. The author and the title are fully deserving of this accolade. 'Joe Hone is a marvelously compelling, acute and subtle writer of spy novels. The “Peter Marlow” sequence should be rediscovered and acclaimed as enduring classics of the genre.' William Boyd The time is May, 1967 in the weeks leading up to the Arab/Israeli six day war. The place is Cairo. The story is Peter Marlow's, an Irish teacher and secret agent sent from London to find his friend and fellow spy, Henry Edwards who has vanished from Cairo. During the course of this fool's errand, he also finds his former wife, Bridget, who is now deeply involved with Edwards both emotionally and professionally. Marlow moves easily in British and Egyptian intelligence branches, attaching his allegiance to neither until he becomes the unwitting victim of a failed plot to topple Nasser. Credible and dramatic, this is a story of callous political and human intrigue and of a mission which can only succeed if none of the men return. Faber Finds is reissuing all four of the Peter Marlow spy novels: The Private Sector, The Sixth Directorate, The Valley of the Fox and The Flowers of the Forest. 'An absolutely terrific espionage novel. It's always a mark of a good writer if he can take a genre that a good many other writers have worked in and bring something new and distinctive to it. That Joseph Hone has certainly done.' James Dickey 'A brilliant and calculated spy story ... His characters and the quality of the writing are so good that he has transcended the usual limitations of the genre.' Times Literary Supplement 'Mr Hone writes Len Deighton into the ground. It's much more than just a spy story, and set in the Egypt he knows so well that he occasionally out-Durrell's Durrell.' New Statesman

Описание: This book examines the twenty-year period that saw the US fleet shrink under the pressures of arms-limitation treaties, and then grow again to a world-class force. The authors trace the Navy`s evolution from a fleet centred around slow battleships to one that deployed most of the warship types that proved so essential in World War II.
