Описание: For the past thirty years, Japanese photographer Naoya Hatakeyama has undertaken a photographic examination of the life of cities and the built environment.

Each of his series focuses on a different facet of the growth and transformation of the urban landscape--from studies of architectural maquettes to the extraction and use of natural materials such as limestone, as it is quarried via explosive blasts and subsequently incorporated into the construction of new buildings. In particular, Hatakeyama has routinely returned to the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolis, exploring this ever-evolving urban sprawl from both below and above, mapping the growth and expansion of these sites over time. Additional series focus on other forms of human intervention with the landscape and natural materials, including factories and building sites in Japan and abroad. Finally, his most recent photographs of his hometown of Rikuzentakata, a fishing town that was almost completely destroyed by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, are also included--an ongoing series begun almost immediately following the disaster. These photographs hauntingly embody the death and rebirth of the city, manifesting a deeply personal connection to the ongoing intersection of geology, architecture, and time.

Описание: How do we reconcile the sanctity of Indigenous burial grounds with the desire to study them?

Whether by curious Boy Scouts and "backyard archaeologists" or competitive collectors and knowledge-hungry anthropologists, the excavation of Native remains is a practice fraught with injustice and simmering resentments.

Grave Matters is the history of the treatment of Native remains in California and the story of the complicated relationship between researcher and researched. Tony Platt begins his journey with his son's funeral at Big Lagoon, a seaside village in pastoral Humboldt County in Northern California, once O-py weg, a bustling center for the Yurok and the site of a plundered native cemetery. Platt travels the globe in search of the answer to the question: How do we reconcile a place of extraordinary beauty with its horrific past?

Grave Matters centers the Yurok people and the eventual movement to repatriate remains and reclaim ancient rights, but it is also a universal story of coming to terms with the painful legacy of a sorrowful past. This book, originally published in 2011, is updated here with a preface by the author.

Описание: In nature, green polymers (natural polymers) in plants and animals always coexist with water. The characteristic features of polymers organized in nature are difficult to understand without water. Specific features of green polymers are characterised via interaction with water molecules which strongly interact with the hydrophilic group of polymers. Molecular motion of the main chain of polysaccharides, whether extracted from wood, fungi, seaweed, or bacteria, is considerably enhanced in the presence of water. Not only in crystalline polysaccharides but also amorphous lignin, the effect of water on molecular motion is clearly observed by various experimental techniques. When the molecular motion of green polymers is investigated in the presence of water, molecular rearrangement occurs by the introduction of water into the system, and the higher-order structure is rearranged during molecular movement by heating conditions. Phase transition behaviour of water molecules is also affected in the presence of hydrophilic polymers, such as polysaccharides. Molecular enhancement of water molecules and hydrophilic polymers cooperate with each other and phase transition behaviour of the above system also corresponds to the above motion. Even the first-order phase transition of water is affected in the presence of polysaccharides. When glass transition behaviour of the natural polymer-water system is investigated, it is important to take into consideration the fact that the structural change of both components has necessarily taken place. In this book, the molecular relaxation of green polymers, especially the thermodynamic concept of green polymers and the bound water, will be described in Chapter 2. Various techniques to measure the glass transition of green polymers in dry and wet conditions are explained in Chapter 3. Special attention is paid to sample handling for controlling water content. Glass transition behaviour of various polysaccharides and model compounds is described in Chapter 4. An explanation of lignin and its synthetic model polymers is also given in Chapter 5.

Описание:

In The Politics of Operations Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson investigate how capital reshapes its relation with politics through operations that enable the extraction and exploitation of mineral resources, labor, data, and cultures. They show how capital—which they theorize as a direct political actor—operates through the logistical organization of relations between people, property, and objects as well as through the penetration of financialization into all realms of economic life. Mezzadra and Neilson present a capacious analysis of a wide range of issues, from racial capitalism, the convergence of neoliberalism and nationalism, and Marx's concept of aggregate capital to the financial crisis of 2008 and how colonialism, empire, and globalization have shaped the modern state since World War II. In so doing, they illustrate the distinctive rationality and logics of contemporary capitalism while calling for a politics based on collective institutions that exist outside the state.

Описание: Literary Nonfiction. "The strings of a violin have to be held in place on both ends, and the two poles of Elizabeth Mosier's book are memory (as archaeology) and forgetting (in the very moving passages about the author's mother and her descent into the blankness of Alzheimer's). The music of this book is very fine indeed, and its passion is for the preservation of objects, moments, persons, and places that Elizabeth Mosier has loved. In its clear-sighted lyric eloquence, this book is unforgettable."--Charles Baxter
