Описание: The present monograph deals with a particular class of approximation methods in the context of light scattering by small particles. This class of approximations has been termed as eikonal or soft particle approximations. The eikonal approximation was studied extensively in the potential scattering and then adopted in optical scattering problems. In this context, the eikonal and other soft particle approximations pertain to scatterers whose relative refractive index compared to surrounding medium is close to unity. The study of these approximations is very important because soft particles occur abundantly in nature. For example, the particles that occur in ocean optics, biomedical optics, atmospheric optics and in many industrial applications can be classified as soft particles. Описание: The photorefractive effect is one of the highest-sensitivity non-linear optical effects. The rate of progress in the development of photorefractive applications has been limited by the rate in which breakthroughs in materials science have supplied better wide-bandgap semiconductor materials. The last few years have seen an upsurge of interest in characterisation of new wide-bandgap semiconductor materials. Holographic recording in wide-bandgap photorefractive materials is of particular interest from the scientific and practical point of view. Such a recording includes the stage of space charge formation, which is associated with the spatial redistribution of photoinduced carriers. A number of new methods studying the dynamics of space charge and photoconductivity in wide-bandgap semiconductors were proposed during recent years. This book deals with the so-called non-steady-state photo-EMF effect and its applications for material characterization and adaptive interferometry. The first part of the book discusses the theory of the non-steady-state photo-EMF effect. The second part of the book describes the application of the non-steady-state photo-EMF effect for the investigation of wide- bandgap semiconductors and nanostructured materials, including photorefractive sillenites grown in the air and argon atmosphere, molecular crystal SnS2, boron nitride crystals, nano-sized GaN and Se within porous matrices, SiC, AlN and Ga2O3 crystals. The third part of the book presents a theoretical analysis and experimental investigation of the non-steady-state photoelectromotive force and two-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals under frequency-modulated illumination. The final part of the book describes adaptive interferometers using the effect of the non-steady-state photo-EMF. This book has been written to be accessible to specialists working in solid state physics, semiconductor physics and adaptive inter-ferometry, laser-based ultrasound. The subject areas include: Photorefractive non-linear optics, dynamic holography, interferometry, wide-bandgap semiconductors and laser-doppler velocimetry. References to over 200 original papers represent the personal selections of the authors, who are grateful to all of their colleagues for their assistance and contributions. The aim of time-resolved optical stimulation is to separate in time the stimulation and emission of luminescence. The luminescence is stimulated from a sample using a brief light pulse. The ensuing luminescence can be monitored either during stimulation in the presence of scattered stimulating light or after the light-pulse. The time-resolved luminescence spectrum measured in this way can be resolved into components each with a distinct lifetime. The lifetimes are linked to physical processes of luminescence and thus provide a means to study dynamics involving charge transfer between point-defects in materials.This book is devoted to time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence and is suitable for researchers with an interest in the study of point-defects using luminescence methods. The book first sets the method within the context of luminescence field at large and then provides an overview of the instrumentation used. There is much attention on models for time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence, two of which are analytical and the third of which is based on computational simulation of experimental results. To bring relevance to the discussion, the book draws on examples from studies on quartz and a-Al2O3:C, two materials widely investigated using this method. The book shows how kinetic analysis for various thermal effects such as thermal quenching and thermal assistance can be investigated using time-resolved luminescence. Although use of light sums is an obvious choice for this, contemporary work is discussed to show the versatility of using other alternative methods such the dynamic throughput.
