Widely heralded as one of the first truly modern novels, Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" was published in 1925 and is one of the author's most popular and critically acclaimed works. All of the events of the novel take place on a single day in June 1923 and the novel's perspective varies often as Woolf journeys inside the minds of many characters as they each experience the day and connect its events to the memories of their past. The two main characters are Clarissa Dalloway, a wealthy woman of high society who is planning a party for that evening, and Septimus Warren Smith, a veteran of the First World War, who continues to suffer from the trauma he experienced on the battlefield. Both characters are constantly aware of the passage of time, as Clarissa often reflects on her happy youth and her missed opportunities for love and passion and Septimus is haunted by his memories of the horror he witnessed and feels death looming ever closer and closer. Heartbreaking and powerfully evocative, "Mrs. Dalloway" is a timeless masterpiece about finding the joy in little things while never completely forgetting the fleetingness of life and the inevitably of death. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

"This astonishing new book, by the brilliant Robin Black is an intimate meditation on reading and writing, aftermath and possibility, the tension between the never-stable, endlessly interpretable depths of a book and the fragility of life, the finality of death. I emerged from this breathtaking work with a transformed understanding of both Woolf's masterpiece and the stream of consciousness in which we swim, "together and alone."--Karen Russell
"Reading Robin Black's astute and enlightening meditation on Mrs. Dalloway is like eavesdropping on a mesmerizing literary conversation, but one in which the participants are not two readers but a reader and a masterpiece. Black threads the very moving story of her own evolution as a writer through the exquisite fabric of Woolf's great novel, and the result will fascinate everyone who cares about the craft of fiction."--Ann Packer
"I loved reading Robin Black's take on Mrs. Dalloway. She generously shares details of her own life that offer an example of how a great book stays with a person, and goes deep into the intricacies of important craft aspects of the text, illuminating its brilliance. It's a privilege to read alongside her."--Alice Elliot Dark
"Through Black's gorgeous blend of personal narrative and incisive close reading, Virginia Woolf's novel becomes again fresh and contemporary, while at the same time deeper in its mysteries. I finished this Bookmarked knowing more about myself as a woman, reader, and writer." --Pamela Erens
"At fifty-nine, I am now the age Virginia Woolf was when she took that final, heavy-pocketed walk into The River Ouse. I am the age at which she killed herself, and I am not going to kill myself; but I was by no means always sure of that."
Considered Virginia Woolf's greatest novel, Mrs. Dalloway tells the story of a single day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a high society woman in post World War I England. As she is preoccupied with the last-minute details of dinner party, Clarissa is flooded with remembrances of the past, in the process reexamining the choices she has made, as well as looking toward old age. Written in a stream of consciousness style, Mrs. Dalloway is one of the most important novels in literature.
In this deeply personal volume, Robin Black writes about Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, a book she returned to again and again when she began writing at nearly forty and found herself gaining a sense of emotional stability for the first time in her life. For two decades, Mrs. Dalloway has been Black's partner in a crucial, ongoing conversation about writing and about the emotional life. Now, Black takes a deep dive into both the craft of the book, what a writer might learn from its mechanics, and also into the humanity to be found on every page.

Adeline Virginia Woolf ( 1882 - 28th March 1941) is one of Britain's leading literary talents and a pioneer of modernist writing especially 'stream of consciousness' which provides the reader with the flow of thoughts from the naked inner voice without any filter, order or arrangement. She overcame sexual abuse from her brothers, the death of her mother and then sister in her childhood but it was the death of her father as a young adult that institutionalised her. These dark emotional episodes were to reappear at different times throughout her life but did not prevent her prolific output of some of the most poignant and poetic prose ever written.
Mrs Dalloway is often thought of as one of Woolf's most brilliant novels and was the basis of the award winning film The Hours. It takes place on a June day in post WWI London where wealthy socialite Clarissa Dalloway is preoccupied with the finishing touches to her party. She considers those that will be attending her party that evening, past loves, people who have touched her life, a re-evaluation of her practical marriage and her hesitancy in growing old.
These flashbacks, reminiscences and memories conjure up a vivid and insightful portrait that make this a riveting read and a classic work by a brilliant author at the top of her game.
Mrs Dalloway (published on 14 May 1925) is a novel by Virginia Woolf that details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fictional high-society woman in post-First World War England. It is one of Woolf's best-known novels.
Created from two short stories, "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" and the unfinished "The Prime Minister", the novel addresses Clarissa's preparations for a party she will host that evening. With an interior perspective, the story travels forward and back in time and in and out of the characters' minds to construct an image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure. In October 2005, Mrs Dalloway was included on Time's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since Time debuted in 1923.

"Mrs. Dalloway was the first novel to split the atom. ... It is one of the most moving, revolutionary artworks of the twentieth century." (Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours.)
"Virginia Woolf was one of the great innovators of that decade of literary Modernism, the 1920s. Novels such as Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse showed how experimental writing could reshape our sense of ordinary life. Taking unremarkable materials - preparations for a genteel party, a day on a bourgeois family holiday - they trace the flow of associations and ideas that we call 'consciousness'." - The Guardian
"Mrs Dalloway, ... a book for a lifetime" -- Christine Dwyer Hickey.
Mrs Dalloway describes a day in 1923 in the life of an upper-class Londoner, Clarissa Dalloway, as she prepares for a party she is hosting. In lyrical language, Virginia Woolf describes Clarissa, her memories, day-dreams, regrets and fears, to masterfully entwine the past, present and future in what is regarded as one of the great novels of the twentieth century. "The novel's opening pages are probably the most ecstatic representation of running errands in the Western canon." (Evan Kindley). The novel is essentially plotless; using the springboard of the mundane preparations for a society party, it travels backwards and forwards through time, drawing the reader into the consciousness of the characters.
Mrs Dalloway, perhaps Virginia Woolf's most popular work, and perhaps semiautobiographical, is a book worth reading and rereading.
Virginia Woolf was of course a great novelist, but she has influenced literature in many ways. She and her husband Leonard Woolf set up and ran the Hogarth Press which published works by key modernist writers as well as important works in translation. In their first five years they published Katherine Mansfield, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, Clive Bell, Roger Fry and Sigmund Freud, but also rejected James Joyce's Ulysses. She reviewed extensively and wrote on the art of writing and on the form of the novel. Through her stylistic innovations like the stream of consciousness, Virginia Woolf, like James Joyce, changed the course of literature.
