Описание: Karalina Matskevich examines the structures that map out the construction of gendered and national identities in Genesis 2–3 and 12–36. Matskevich shows how the dominant ‘Subject’ – the androcentric ha’adam and the ethnocentric Israel – is perceived in relation to and over against the ‘Other’, represented respectively as female and foreign. Using the tools of narratology, semiotics and psychoanalysis, Matskevich highlights the contradiction inherent in the project of dominance, through which the Subject seeks to suppress the transforming power of difference it relies on for its signification. Thus, in Genesis 2-3 ha’adam can only emerge as a complex Subject in possession of knowledge with the help of woman, the transforming Other to whom the narrator (and Yahweh) attributes both the agency and the blame. Similarly, the narratives of Genesis 12–36 show a conflicted attitude to places of alterity: Egypt, the fertile and seductive space that threatens annihilation, and Haran, the ‘mother’s land’, a complex metaphor for the feminine. The construction of identity in these narratives largely relies on the symbolic fecundity of the Other.

Drawing on interdisciplinary research that emphasises how space and emotions are inextricably linked in human experience, Mylonas explores the portrayal of Yhwh’s wife, Jerusalem, in Ezekiel 16 as a personified city who feels emotion. She foregrounds purity and gender issues, as well as debates on emotions in the Hebrew Bible, emphasising that spatiality is a key component of how these issues are conceptualised in ancient Israel.This book argues that the power struggle between Jerusalem and Yhwh in Ezekiel 16 is a struggle over the contested space of Jerusalem’s body and the city space. Jerusalem’s emotions are in a dynamic relationship with the spaces in the text – they are signified by these spaces, shift as the constitution of the spaces shifts, and are shaped by Jerusalem’s use of space. Her desire, pride, and shamelessness are communicated spatially through her use of city space, while her representation as disgusting is underscored by her “uncontrollable” female body. Mylonas concludes by showing how Ezekiel’s vision of the new Jerusalem in Ezekiel 40-48 re-establishes sacred space through the erasure of the feminine city metaphor coupled with strict boundary policing, which is a far cry from the assault on Jerusalem’s boundaries described in Ezekiel 16.

Bible, Gender, and Reception History: The Case of Job's Wife investigates
the fleeting appearance in the Bible of Job's wife and its impact on the
imaginations of readers throughout history.
It begins by presenting key
interpretive gaps in the biblical text concerning Job and his wife, explaining
the way gender studies offers guiding principles with which the author engages
a reception history of their marriage. After analyzing Job and his wife within
medieval Christian theology of Eden, the author identifies ways in which Job's
wife visually aligns with medieval images of Satan. The volume explores portrayals
of Job and his wife in publications on marriage and gender roles in the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, moving onto an investigation of William
Blake's sharp artistic divergence from the common tradition in his representation
of Job's wife as a shrew. In the exploration of societal portrayals of Job and
his Wife throughout history, this book discovers how arguments about marriage
intertwine with not only gender roles, but also, with political, social, and
historical movements.
