In Compositional Subjects Laura Hyun Yi Kang explores the ways that Asian/American women have been figured by mutually imbricated modes of identity formation, representation, and knowledge production. In addition to the shifting meanings and alignments of “Asian,” “American,” and “women,” the book examines the discourses, political and economic conditions, and institutional formations that have produced Asian/American women as generic authors, as visibly desirable and desiring bodies, as excludable aliens and admissible citizens of the United States, and as the proper labor for transnational capitalism. Although Chinese Marxism—primarily represented by Maoism—is generally seen by Western intellectuals as monolithic, Liu Kang argues that its practices and projects are as diverse as those in Western Marxism, particularly in the area of aesthetics. In this comparative study of European and Chinese Marxist traditions, Liu reveals the extent to which Chinese Marxists incorporate ideas about aesthetics and culture in their theories and practices. In doing so, he constructs a wholly new understanding of Chinese Marxism. Far from being secondary considerations in Chinese Marxism, aesthetics and culture are in fact principal concerns. In this respect, such Marxists are similar to their Western counterparts, although Europeans have had little understanding of the Chinese experience. Liu traces the genealogy of aesthetic discourse in both modern China and the West since the era of classical German thought, showing where conceptual modifications and divergences have occurred in the two traditions. Self-criticism isn't the problem. Our resistance to it is.
The truth is we can't control most of our thoughts. Our unhealthy, habitual ways of thinking are the result of past conditioning, and they have become a part of our protective mechanism. It's not easy to change this system overnight.
Instead of fixing and resisting our thoughts, we can change our unconscious reactions to those judgments. Our inner critic might be unkind to us, but that doesn't mean we have to believe everything it says.
The reason why we continue to feel hurt by our negative self-talk is not that the words are hurtful. It's because we are quick to believe that these harsh criticisms about us are true
