A new concept on human diversity has emerged over the past 10 years that promises to revolutionize the way educators provide services to students with special needs: neurodiversity. Just as we celebrate diversity in nature and cultures, so too do we need to honor the diversity of brains among our students who learn, think, and behave differently. In Neurodiversity in the Classroom, best-selling author Thomas Armstrong argues that we should embrace the strengths of such neurodiverse students to help them and their neurotypical peers thrive in school and beyond.
This innovative book focuses on five categories of special needs: learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. For each category, Armstrong provides an in-depth discussion of
* The positive attributes associated with that category, * Acclaimed neurodiverse adults who have excelled in their chosen fields, * Computer programs and applications that allow students with special needs to overcome obstacles and achieve success, * Rich networks of human resources both inside and outside of school that educators can draw upon to support the social and emotional lives of neurodiverse students, * Innovative learning strategies that are tailored to each student's unique strengths, * Future career paths for which a student's particular gifts might be a good fit, * Modifications in the school environment that allow for seamless inclusion of neurodiverse students in the regular classroom, and * Timely information about how to integrate the strategies and assessments for each category with the Common Core State Standards.
It's time that we focused on celebrating rather than pathologizing our students with special needs so that they can fully realize their potential in school and life. This practical and thought-provoking book will inspire teachers and administrators everywhere to make sure that all students with special needs get the support and strength-based instruction they deserve.

Just because a child is gifted doesn't mean they don't have other types of neurodivergence, like ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and more. Conversely, even children with one of these diagnoses can be cognitively gifted. Raising Twice-Exceptional Children provides you with a road map to understand the complex make-up of your gifted-plus, or twice-exceptional, child or teen.
The book helps you understand your child's diagnosis, meet their social-emotional needs, build self-regulation skills and goal setting, and teach self-advocacy. It also shows you effective ways to collaborate with teachers and school staff, and it offers advice on finding strengths-based strategies that support development at home.
For too long, these kids have fallen through the cracks. This book provides key information on how to best support neurodivergent children by leveraging their strengths while supporting their struggles.

Описание: Although twice exceptional students are gradually receiving more recognition and intervention, they are still a grossly underserved segment of the school population. A Call to Action: Identification and Intervention for Twice and Thrice Exceptional Students begins with basic information about twice exceptional students-students who are both gifted/talented and who also have learning disabilities-and provides strategies for how educators can identify these students. It is imperative that classroom teachers provide intervention to address both exceptionalities since these students often score at grade level on standardized tests, the giftedness score lowered by the learning disability raised by the giftedness, resulting in neither exceptionality being addressed because they do not qualify for either of the special services. This book discusses the Informal Reading Inventory, how it should be administered, and how the information provided by this instrument can enable the classroom teacher to meet the special needs of these students. It also presents Stopwatch Spelling, a program that with a fast-paced, confidence-building approach, helps many students overcome a frustrating impediment to becoming proficient readers and spellers. A Call to Action draws upon classroom and clinical experiences, field work, and interviews with twice exceptional students of all ages, parents, and community partners.

This book is the story of my lifelong 2e Journey Informed by Traditional Indigenous Learning
To address the daunting challenges we face as a global community, we need people who can see the world beyond an "either-or" dualistic perspective. This book presumes such a dualistic perspective has been especially damaging to the twice-exceptional (2e) or gifted and learning disabled (Gifted and LD or GLD) children of the world, children who are growing up like I did, gifted and learning disabled. These children have so much potential to see the world as connected and to teach us to honor diversity and complementarity. Yet the Western educational paradigm typically thinks of these children as broken and in need of fixing. 2e children often find themselves separated, provided remedial programs, medicated, and made to feel broken or just ignored as they can appear average. If 2e children are noticed at all, educators usually focus on 2e children's disabilities rather than on their gifts. If the pattern of medication and behavioral modification intervention causes these children to underperform or drop out of the educational system altogether, we have lost valuable members of society who can help us solve complex challenges.
I propose adding an Indigenous framework to cluster-grouped classrooms to help move toward a more holistic approach for developing 2e children and honoring their gifts, regardless of the gifts children bring to classrooms. With the introduction of traditional Indigenous approaches to education, mindsets can evolve allowing for a rethinking of our educational structures. This borderland experience takes place at the intersection of Indigenous and Western worldviews. Just as cultures collide at their borders, so do worldviews. New un-envisioned cultures and possibilities emerge at these borderlands. By Indigenizing our schools, classrooms, and curriculum, we can educate our children with a more dialogic, holistic, culturally and historically sensitive, and connected approach to learning. Creating such an Indigenous context for schools can prevent the lifelong damage which often comes from a mechanistic approach to education for 2e and Learning Disabled children. This autoethnography "imagines" how my own life's journey might have been different had Indigenous perspectives been operational in the educational system within which I grew up.
