Описание: The number of Earth observation satellites launched in recent years is growing exponentially, along with the datasets they gather from free-to-access and commercial providers. The second edition of Practical Handbook of Remote Sensing is updated with new explanations and practical examples using the Copernicus satellite data and new versions of the open-source software. A new chapter and new applications have also been added. Thoroughly revised, the handbook continues to be a practical "how-to" remote sensing guide for those who want to use the technology, understand what is available, how to access it, and answer questions about our planet, but do not necessarily want to become scientific experts.

Advanced Remote Sensing for Urban and Landscape Ecology

Описание: This book introduces the use of various remote sensing data such as microwave, hyperspectral and very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery; mapping techniques including pixel and object-based machine learning; and geostatistical modelling techniques including cellular automation, entropy and land fragmentation. Remote sensing plays a vital role in solving urban and environmental challenges at the landscape level. Globally, more than half of the urban population is facing severe environmental and social challenges, especially those relating to climate change, agricultural land encroachment, green infrastructure and environmental degradation, mobility due to rapid rural–urban transformation and anthropogenic interventions. Mapping and quantification of such threats at the landscape level are challenging for experts using traditional techniques; however, remote sensing technology provides diverse spatial data at a varying scale, volume and accessibility for mapping and modelling, and it also analyses challenges at urban and landscape levels. Together, they address challenges at urban and landscape levels to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Описание:

Every year, natural disasters cause substantial loss of life and livelihoods globally, costing an estimated over $100 billion per year in the form of property loss and mobilization of emergency response personnel and equipment. It is critical to monitor, model and predict the risks of natural hazards in order to save lives, enhance societal resilience to natural hazards, and reduce economic losses. Modern technologies such as remote sensing, geographical information system, and high-performance computation have greatly propelled advances in the studies of natural hazards. Remote sensing, in particular, is a useful and important tool for monitoring, modeling and early warning of natural hazards (e.g. landslides, floods, earthquakes, tornados). Recent advanced methods include but not limited in: optical images, satellite and ground-based SAR, airborne and terrestrial laser scanning, GNSS, hyperspectral imaging and sensor network. With the rapid development of technology, future improvements in resolution, precision, efficiency, accuracy and smartness can be expected.

The overall objectives of this proposed book is to review and summarize the recent progresses in the monitoring, modeling and early warning of natural hazards, including floods, landslides, droughts, hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes and volcanoes, and collect novel techniques and discover potential applications.

The first section of the book will thus cover the methods and techniques used to monitor, detect and measure the natural hazard events and the means to obtain important informant and data to study nature hazards. The second section will describe the uses of remote sensing technologies to investigate the processes and causes of natural hazards and recent advances in the theories and mechanisms of natural hazards. Last, the third section will introduce the existing operational, early warning and forecasting systems for natural hazards.

This proposed book will include four sections: section one describes the methodologies used to monitor and detect the occurrences of natural hazards; section two summarizes the application of remote sensing technologies in investigating and understanding natural hazards; and section three provides an overview of the existing early warning and forecasting systems for natural hazards. In section one, we will present recent studies and advances that are focused on how to obtain important and necessary data to conduct the studies of natural hazards. In section two, we will compile recent advances in the theories and mechanisms that govern the processes and occurrences of natural hazards. In section three, the topic is shifted to the operational, early warning and forecasting systems for natural hazards.

Описание: This book examines the theory and methods of remote sensing intelligent interpretation based on deep learning. Based on geological and environmental effects on mines, this book constructs a set of systematic mine remote sensing datasets focusing on the multi-level task with the system of “target detection?scene classification?semantic segmentation." Taking China’s Hubei Province as an example, this book focuses on the following four aspects: 1. Development of a multiscale remote sensing dataset of the mining area, including mine target remote sensing dataset, mine (including non-mine areas) remote sensing scene dataset, and semantic segmentation remote sensing dataset of mining land cover. The three datasets are the basis of intelligent interpretation based on deep learning. 2. Research on mine target remote sensing detection method based on deep learning. 3. Research on remote sensing scene classification method of mine and non-mine areas based on deep learning. 4. Research on the fine-scale classification method of mining land cover based on semantic segmentation. The book is a valuable reference both for scholars, practitioners and as well as graduate students who are interested in mining environment research.

Описание: This edited book is a collection of information on recent advancements in remote sensing for forestry application. The main focus of this book is to address the novel applications in remote sensing in terms of recent techniques, sensors, methods and data collection. Remote sensing has been used for many decades. Today, remote sensing is heavily utilized in forest management, which is acquired from airborne and space-borne platforms using satellite data. In recent years, there have been rapid advances in the new types of sensors. The new generations of satellite sensors are introduced not only to provide important information on forest ecosystems, but also to improve the techniques and accuracies obtained by the traditional approaches. Researchers have become increasingly aware of the potential of remote sensing to address important forestry issues and challenges. The number of forestry publications using remote sensing has grown very rapidly, and this is noticeable with many recent technologies and applications. This book provides valuable source of reference to foresters, researchers, ecologists, climate change scientists and scholars who use remote sensing in their work. Furthermore, it serves as an academic book for undergraduate and graduate students of forestry, agriculture, natural resources and environmental sciences. The book demonstrates and engages the students how the new advancements in remote sensing technology and theory relate to the many real-world forestry applications. It gives readers deeper understanding on how remote sensing has come a long way and evolved into a mature science in the past five decades.
