The why, what and how of the electric vehicle powertrain
Empowers engineering professionals and students with the knowledge and skills required to engineer electric vehicle powertrain architectures, energy storage systems, power electronics converters and electric drives.
The modern electric powertrain is relatively new for the automotive industry, and engineers are challenged with designing affordable, efficient and high-performance electric powertrains as the industry undergoes a technological evolution. Co-authored by two electric vehicle (EV) engineers with decades of experience designing and putting into production all of the powertrain technologies presented, this book provides readers with the hands-on knowledge, skills and expertise they need to rise to that challenge.
This four-part practical guide provides a comprehensive review of battery, hybrid and fuel cell EV systems and the associated energy sources, power electronics, machines, and drives. The first part of the book begins with a historical overview of electromobility and the related environmental impacts motivating the development of the electric powertrain. Vehicular requirements for electromechanical propulsion are then presented. Battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), and conventional and hybrid electrical vehicles (HEV) are then described, contrasted and compared for vehicle propulsion. The second part of the book features in-depth analysis of the electric powertrain traction machines, with a particular focus on the induction machine and the surface- and interior-permanent magnet ac machines. The brushed dc machine is also considered due to its ease of operation and understanding, and its historical place, especially as the traction machine on NASA's Mars rovers. The third part of the book features the theory and applications for the propulsion, charging, accessory, and auxiliary power electronics converters. Chapters are presented on isolated and non-isolated dc-dc converters, traction inverters, and battery charging. The fourth part presents the introductory and applied electromagnetism required as a foundation throughout the book.

Описание: The aim of this work, consisting of 9 individual, self-contained booklets, is to describe commercial vehicle technology in a way that is clear, concise and illustrative. Compact and easy to understand, it provides an overview of the technology that goes into modern commercial vehicles. Starting from the customer's fundamental requirements, the characteristics and systems that define the design of the vehicles are presented knowledgeably in a series of articles, each of which can be read and studied on their own. This volume, "Alternative Powertrains and Supplements to the Conventional Powertrain", introduces alternatives and additions to the conventional powertrain of the commercial vehicle. The wide range of options is presented so as to be clearly understandable for those learning and working with them in a practical environment. Hybrid vehicles, electric powertrains and alternative fuels are discussed.

Описание: This book deals with the simulative prediction of efficiency and CO2-emissions of future powertrain systems for the year 2040. For this purpose, a suitable simulation environment is first created. This is followed by a technology extrapolation of all relevant powertrain systems, for example: combustion engines, electric drives, fuel cells as well as all relevant additional components. These components are then used to build 57 vehicle variants for the simulation. Finally, extensive simulations of the vehicle variants are carried out, evaluated and compared. Comprehensive tables of results are available for all simulated vehicle variants. The evaluations are of interest to anyone concerned with energy consumption and CO2-emissions of future vehicles.

Описание: The variety of future powertrain concepts has drastically increased the development cost for automotive manufactures. Profitable investment requires a significantly leaner and efficient powertrain development process. Traditional methods of test and model based development need to be assisted by big data and data analytics. For this purpose, a valuable tool is available at the right time - artificial intelligence (AI). But what does AI really mean in a narrower sense? What concepts lie behind it? And how are the methods and algorithms transferable to powertrain applications? For the first time, this book aims to bridge the gap between automotive engineering and computer science, by illuminating the complexity of current AI concepts and demystifying it for powertrain applications. By elaborating on work processes, it shows how AI could be implemented and how completely novel methods can help us reshape the future of mobility.

Описание: In this book, the reader learns the essential differences to the passenger car through the analysis divided according to assemblies. This gives him the tools to apply the detailed knowledge acquired to the design and development of competition vehicles. In the case of internal combustion engines, the focus is on performance-enhancing measures for racing vehicles. From the choice of the number of cylinders to the intake system to the exhaust system, the lever can be applied to every assembly. For electric drives, the traction battery, cell selection, cooling and operating strategy are considered in more detail. Energy recovery systems are an interesting enhancement for hybrid vehicles and all-electric powertrains, especially in strategic considerations for racing. Finally, gearboxes are needed independently of the drive source, albeit matched to it, so that the full potential can be exploited. The detailed, in-depth presentation makes this work just as suitable for the interested motorsport enthusiast as it is for the engineer in the field who is addressing the issues surrounding race car powertrains. The formula material is prepared in such a way that the book can also be used as a reference work.

Описание: Tunan Shen aims to increase the availability of powertrain systems for autonomous electric vehicles by improving the diagnostic capability for critical faults. Following the fault analysis of powertrain systems in battery electric vehicles, the focus is on the electrical and mechanical faults of the electric machine. A multi-level diagnostic approach is proposed, which consists of multiple diagnostic models, such as a physical model, a data-based anomaly detection model, and a neural network model. To improve the overall diagnostic capability, a decision making function is designed to derive a comprehensive decision from the predictions of various operating points and different models.
