Описание: This concise text introduces the reader to the use of perturbation methods, able to investigate nonlinear phenomena in continuous (not only discrete) mechanical systems. Distinct from the classic books on perturbation methods, the algorithms are directly illustrated for continuous systems, referring to a very simple case-study as well as to a metamodel, for which Statics, Buckling, Dynamics and Bifurcation behavior are quickly analyzed. Moreover, fundamental mechanical aspects are discussed in dealing with applications. Concepts herein are reinforced with worked examples at the end the book, relevant to several continuous systems.
Дополнительное описание: Introduction.- Conservative static systems.- Non-autonomous dynamical systems.- Autonomous nonconservative dynamical systems.- Nonlinear continuum models.- Perturbation methods for a continuum metamodel.- Solved Problems.- Summary.

Описание: This book presents the modeling and scaling of physical problems, which result in normalized perturbation equations. This is followed by solving perturbation problems and evaluating the results. The author refines perturbation methods into simple, understandable elements and avoids unnecessary theorems and proofs. In addition, the results are consolidated and interpreted, and the presented examples are succinct to illustrate the essential techniques. This book is ideal and beneficial for practicing scientists and engineers who need to understand and apply perturbation methods to difficult problems with applications in mathematics, engineering, and biology. Discussions on new perspectives, simpler presentations on convergence, and the expansion of integrals are included.

Описание: This volume in the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition, is devoted to the fundamentals of Perturbation Theory (PT) as well as key applications areas such as Classical and Quantum Mechanics, Celestial Mechanics, and Molecular Dynamics. Less traditional fields of application, such as Biological Evolution, are also discussed. Leading scientists in each area of the field provide a comprehensive picture of the landscape and the state of the art, with the specific goal of combining mathematical rigor, explicit computational methods, and relevance to concrete applications. New to this edition are chapters on Water Waves, Rogue Waves, Multiple Scales methods, legged locomotion, Condensed Matter among others, while all other contributions have been revised and updated. Coverage includes the theory of (Poincare’-Birkhoff) Normal Forms, aspects of PT in specific mathematical settings (Hamiltonian, KAM theory, Nekhoroshev theory, and symmetric systems), technical problems arising in PT with solutions, convergence of series expansions, diagrammatic methods, parametric resonance, systems with nilpotent real part, PT for non-smooth systems, and on PT for PDEs [write out this acronym partial differential equations]. Another group of papers is focused specifically on applications to Celestial Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and the related semiclassical PT, Quantum Bifurcations, Molecular Dynamics, the so-called choreographies in the N-body problem, as well as Evolutionary Theory. Overall, this unique volume serves to demonstrate the wide utility of PT, while creating a foundation for innovations from a new generation of graduate students and professionals in Physics, Mathematics, Mechanics, Engineering and the Biological Sciences.

Описание: This textbook provides details of the derivation of Lagrange's planetary equations and of the closely related Gauss's variational equations, thereby covering a sorely needed topic in existing literature. Analytical solutions can help verify the results of numerical work, giving one confidence that his or her analysis is correct. The authors—all experienced experts in astrodynamics and space missions—take on the massive derivation problem step by step in order to help readers identify and understand possible analytical solutions in their own endeavors. The stages are elementary yet rigorous; suggested student research project topics are provided. After deriving the variational equations, the authors apply them to many interesting problems, including the Earth-Moon system, the effect of an oblate planet, the perturbation of Mercury's orbit due to General Relativity, and the perturbation due to atmospheric drag. Along the way, they introduce several useful techniques such as averaging, Poincar?'s method of small parameters, and variation of parameters. In the end, this textbook will help students, practicing engineers, and professionals across the fields of astrodynamics, astronomy, dynamics, physics, planetary science, spacecraft missions, and others. “An extensive, detailed, yet still easy-to-follow presentation of the field of orbital perturbations.” - Prof. Hanspeter Schaub, Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department, University of Colorado, Boulder “This book, based on decades of teaching experience, is an invaluable resource for aerospace engineering students and practitioners alike who need an in-depth understanding of the equations they use.” - Dr. Jean Albert K?chichian, The Aerospace Corporation, Retired “Today we look at perturbations through the lens of the modern computer. But knowing the why and the how is equally important. In this well organized and thorough compendium of equations and derivations, the authors bring some of the relevant gems from the past back into the contemporary literature.” - Dr. David A Vallado, Senior Research Astrodynamicist, COMSPOC “The book presentation is with the thoroughness that one always sees with these authors. Their theoretical development is followed with a set of Earth orbiting and Solar System examples demonstrating the application of Lagrange’s planetary equations for systems with both conservative and nonconservative forces, some of which are not seen in orbital mechanics books.” - Prof. Kyle T. Alfriend, University Distinguished Professor, Texas A&M University

Описание: Many physical systems require the description of mechanical interaction across interfaces if they are to be successfully analyzed. Examples in the engineered world range from the design of prosthetics in biomedical engi- neering (e. g., hip replacements); to characterization of the response and durability of head/disk interfaces in computer magnetic storage devices; to development of pneumatic tires with better handling characteristics and increased longevity in automotive engineering; to description of the adhe- sion and/or relative slip between concrete and reinforcing steel in structural engineering. Such mechanical interactions, often called contact/impact in- teractions, usually necessitate at minimum the determination of areas over which compressive pressures must act to prevent interpenetration of the mechanical entities involved. Depending on the application, frictional be- havior, transient interaction of interfaces with their surroundings (e. g., in- termittent stick/slip), thermo-mechanical coupling, interaction with an in- tervening lubricant and/or fluid layer, and damage of the interface (i. e., wear) may also be featured. When taken together (or even separately ), these features have the effect of making the equations of mechanical evolu- tion not only highly nonlinear, but highly nonsmooth as well. While many modern engineering simulation packages possess impressive capabilities in the general area of nonlinear mechanics, it can be contended that methodologies typically utilized for contact interactions are relatively immature in comparison to other components of a nonlinear finite element package, such as large deformation kinematics, inelastic material modeling, nonlinear equation solving, or linear solver technology.
