Sammons Название: Ideology, Mimesis, Fantasy: Charles Sealsfield, Friedrich GerstA¤cker, Karl May, and Other German Novelists of America ISBN: 1469656701 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781469656700 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 23410.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: This study of German fiction about America in the nineteenth century concentrates in detail on three writers: Charles Sealsfield (Carl Postl, 1793-1864), an escaped Moravian monk who came to New Orleans in 1823 and wrote the first major German novels about the United States; Friedrich Gerstacker (1816-1872), who, among his many experiences in America as a young man, lived as a backwoodsman in Arkansas and who later produced a large body of fiction, travel reportage, and emigration advice; and Karl May (1842-1912), who, though he knew nothing about America beyond what he could read in books, wrote famous adventure stories set in an imaginary West and became the best-selling writer in the German language.
Sammons provides biographies of the authors and discusses how each differs in their mimetic and ideological approach. He pays particular attention to how the authors address issues of race, gender and politics in the United States. Sammons interweaves his discussion of these three writers with excurses into the emergence of the German Western and anti-Americanism in German fiction.

Описание: This work defends two main theses. First, modern Western pornographic fiction functions as a self-deceptive vehicle for sexual or blood-lustful arousal; and second, that its emergence owes as much to Puritan Protestantism and its inner- or this-worldly asceticism as does the emergence of modern rationalized capitalism.

Vollman, Isil ?zcan studies the maturing career of one of the most important voices in contemporary letters. Vollmann's major works of fiction and nonfiction include his National Book Award winner, Europe Central; his highly acclaimed Seven Dreams novels; and his magnum opus, Rising Up and Rising Down: Some Thoughts on Violence, Urgent Means, and Justifications. ?zcan examines the common threads that interlace Vollmann's corpus and grapples with the depth and Complexity of his massive output. In her readings of Vollmann's works, she identifies a rich but accessible Set of themes that he explores afresh in each text, including death, war, violence, suffering, and love.Vollmann has written in many genres, and his writing is informed by his extensive research and travels around the world, his familiarity with red-light zones, and his war correspondence. The highly Subjective and participative nature of much his writing has foregrounded his personality to such an Extent that he became simultaneously a cult figure and a notorious adventurer. In her readings ?zcan contends that Vollmann compels our attention because he registers a diversity of voices and discourses that makes us hear what the subjugated, the unrecognized, the weak, and the marginalized have to say; the scope and the force of Vollmann's openness to the Other is inseparable from his method and conduct. In addition to close readings of Vollmann's texts, ?zcan also examines his influences and literary connections, tracing his ties to John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, James Agee, and Danilo Ki? and situating him not only in the American canon but also in the longer duration of world literature.

Understanding David Mamet analyzes the broad range of David Mamet's plays and places them in the context of his career as a prolific writer of fiction and nonfiction prose as well as drama. Over the past three decades, Mamet has written more than thirty produced plays and garnered recognition as one of the most significant and influential American playwrights of the post-World War II generation. In addition to playwriting and directing for the theater, Mamet also writes, directs, and produces for film and television, and he writes essays, fiction, poetry, and even children's books. The author remains best known for depicting men in gritty, competitive work environments and for his vernacular dialogue (known in the theater as Mametspeak), which has raised the expletive to an art form. In this insightful survey of Mamet's body of work, Brenda Murphy explores the broad range of his writing for the theater and introduces readers to Mamet's major writing in other literary genres as well as some of his neglected pieces.
Murphy centers her discussion around Mamet's most significant plays--Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna, American Buffalo, Speed-the-Plow, The Cryptogram, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Edmond, The Woods, Lakeboat, Boston Marriage, and The Duck Variations--as well as his three novels--The Village, The Old Religion, and Wilson. Murphy also notes how Mamet's one-act and less known plays provide important context for the major plays and help to give a fuller sense of the scope of his art. A chapter on his numerous essays, including his most anthologized piece of writing, the autobiographical essay The Rake, reflects Mamet's controversial and evolving ideas about the theater, film, politics, religion, and masculinity. Throughout her study Murphy incorporates references to Mamet's popular films as useful waypoints for contextualizing his literary works and understanding his continuing evolution as a writer for multiple mediums.

Описание: Encapsulating all of Hemingway's interests, his short stories are essential for understanding him.Sometimes characterised as the most significant author since Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway was an acknowledged master of the short story, with his groundbreaking style and its apparent simplicity and honesty changing the nature of English prose fiction. While in the early 1920s, some mainstream editors seemed baffled by their subtlety, today his stories are mainstays in the classroom, taught at all levels from secondary school through university graduate courses. In this collection, 13 master teachers from all levels discuss these and other aspects of his work, demonstrating how they motivate students to appreciate what Hemingway is doing. In the process, the collection argues, one can put to rest the stereotyped view of the author as a macho adventurer and, rather, see how Hemingway proves to be uniquely sensitive to his world. The authors discuss both the most commonly taught and significantly less-taught stories that illustrate Hemingway’s concerns. Each has a unique point of departure, each a rich and unique background to bring to both students and interested readers. For further study or for use specifically by teachers, the volume includes classroom exercises and resources, teaching points, and commonly encountered issues.

Описание: Remarkable connections between Hemingway's time and our own digital eraHow can we convince readers, and especially students, to slow down to the crawl that is often necessary to see the real power in the compressed language Hemingway uses to tell a story? Are there qualities of digital age life that make students, somehow, more connected to Hemingway's life and his writing? How can we compare the 21st-century transhumanist interest in making ourselves into 'something more than merely human' with Hemingway’s characters like Nick Adams, Jake Barnes, Frederic Henry, Catherine Barkley, Pilar, Robert Jordan, or Santiago, all of whom similarly wrestle within the bounds of their own mortality?Laura Godfrey has assembled a group of scholars who speak eloquently to these questions. Hemingway’s characters are seen trying to live life 'all the way up,' the way Hemingway's bullfighters did - so which characters do we see as most engaged with the world around them? Which characters pay closest attention to others and to their environments? And did Hemingway seem to assign value to those people who paid close attention? Within this framework, Hemingway's work emerges in stark relief as being about the value - indeed, the necessity - of thoughtfully trying to consider, to observe, and possibly even to understand and connect with people and places. And so, in this 21st-century 'digital age' and its increasing vocabulary about the importance of being mindful, present, intentional, and engaged, Hemingway's writing has become relevant for readers and students of all ages in exciting new ways.Hemingway in the Digital Age makes available to high school, college, and university teachers a wide selection of the emerging techniques and contemporary digital tools for teaching Ernest Hemingway's life and writing, as well as discussions of Hemingway's relevance to digital humanities projects.
The Challenge of Bewilderment treats the epistemology of representation in major works by Henry James, Joseph Conrad, and Ford Madox Ford, attempting to explain how the novel turned away from its traditional concern with realistic representation and toward self-consciousness about the relation between knowing and narration. Paul B. Armstrong here addresses the pivotal thematic experience of "bewilderment," an experience that challenges the reader’s very sense of reality and that shows it to have no more certainty or stability than an interpretative construct.
Through readings of The Sacred Fount and The Ambassadors by James, Lord Jim and Nostromo by Conrad, and The Good Soldier and Parade’s End by Ford, Armstrong examines how each writer dramatizes his understanding of the act of knowing. Armstrong demonstrates how the novelists’ attitudes toward the process of knowing inform experiments with representation, through which they thematize the relation between the understanding of a fictional world and everyday habits of perception. Finally, he considers how these experiments with the strategies of narration produce a heightened awareness of the process of interpretation.
