Описание: The first English-language translation of a crucial medieval Arabic commentary on Aristotle’s Rhetoric, with context on its contribution to intellectual history.
Abū al-Walīd Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Rushd (d. 1198 AD), known as Averroes in the West, wrote one of the most significant medieval Arabic commentaries on Aristotle’s famous treatise, Rhetoric. Averroes worked within a tradition that included the Muslim philosophers Al-Farabi (d. 950) and Avicenna (d. 1037), who together built an early canon introducing Aristotle’s writings to the academies of medieval Europe. Here, for the first time, Lahcen El Yazghi Ezzaher translates Averroes’ Middle Commentary into English, with analysis highlighting its shaping of philosophical thought.
Ibn Rushd was born into a prominent family living in CÓrdoba and Seville during the reign of the Almoḥad dynasty in the Maghreb and al-Andalus. At court, he received support to write a body of rhetorical commentaries extending the work of his Arabic-Muslim predecessors, a critical step in fostering Aristotle’s influence on European scholasticism and Western education. Ezzaher’s meticulous translation of Averroes’ Middle Commentary reflects the depth and breadth of this engagement, incorporating a discussion of the Arabic-Muslim commentary tradition and Averroes’ contribution to it. His research illuminates the complexity of Averroes’ position, articulating the challenges Muslim scholars faced in making non-Muslim texts available to their community. Through his work, we see how people at different historical moments have adapted intellectual concepts to preserve rhetoric’s vitality and relevance in new contexts.
Averroes’ Middle Commentary exemplifies the close connections between ancient Greece and medieval Muslim scholarship and the ways Muslim scholars navigated an appreciation for Aristotelian philosophy alongside a commitment to their cultural and religious systems.

"In one fashion or another, the question with which this introduction begins is a question for every serious reader of Plato's Republic: Of what use is this philosophy to me? Averroes clearly finds that the Republic speaks to his own time and to his own situation.... Perhaps the greatest use he makes of the Republic is to understand better the shari'a itself.... It is fair to say that in deciding to paraphrase the Republic, Averroes is asserting that his world—the world defined and governed by the Koran—can profit from Plato's instruction."—from Ralph Lerner’s IntroductionAn indispensable primary source in medieval political philosophy is presented here in a fully annotated translation of the celebrated discussion of the Republic by the twelfth-century Andalusian Muslim philosopher, Abu'l-Walid Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Rushd, also know by his his Latinized name, Averroes. This work played a major role in both the transmission and the adaptation of the Platonic tradition in the West. In a closely argued critical introduction, Ralph Lerner addresses several of the most important problems raised by the work.

Описание: Brings together world-leading scholars on Averroes, most famous as a commentator on Aristotle but also a major figure in Islamic law. Engages with all aspects of his philosophy from multiple perspectives and treats him in the context of twelfth-century Islamic Spain as well as of Christian and Jewish philosophical traditions.
Ibn Rushd (1126-1198), or Averroes, is widely known as the unrivalled commentator on virtually all works by Aristotle. His commentaries and treatises were used as manuals for understanding Aristotelian philosophy until the Enlightenment. Both Averroes and the movement commonly known as "Latin Averroism" have attracted considerable attention from historians of philosophy and science. Most studies focus on Averroes' psychology, particularly on his doctrine of the "unity of the intellect," Averroes' natural philosophy as a whole and its influence still remain largely unexplored. This volume aims to fill the gap by considering various aspects of Averroes' natural philosophical thought and evaluating its impact on the history of philosophy and science between the late middle ages and the early modern period.

Описание: The twelfth-century philosopher Averroes is often identified by modern Arab thinkers as an early advocate of the Enlightenment. Saud M. S. Автор: Giovanni Licata, Michael Engel Название: Elijah Del Medigo`s Commentary on Averroes` De Substantia Orbis: A Critical Edition of the Latin and Hebrew Versions ISBN: 3110569558 ISBN-13(EAN): 9783110569551 Издательство: Walter de Gruyter Рейтинг: Цена: 123910.00 T Наличие на складе: Нет в наличии. Описание: This book provides the first critical edition of an unpublished work by Elijah Del Medigo (c. 1455–c. 1493), which has survived in both Latin and Hebrew. Del Medigo, a Cretan-born Jewish philosopher who spent most of his professional life in northern Italy, translated several of Averroes’s works from Hebrew into Latin and wrote quaestiones and commentaries concerning difficult aspects of his philosophy. Thanks to growing research activity in recent years, Del Medigo is now recognised as one of the leading protagonists of the “second revelation” of Averroes in the Renaissance: an all-round philosopher whose contribution lies well beyond the confines of his better known “theological” treatise Be?inat ha-dat (Examination of Religion). The commentary on De substantia orbis (On the Essence of the Celestial Sphere) was written at the request of his humanist patron Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Del Medigo started composing the Latin version of his commentary in 1485 and decided to translate it into Hebrew soon afterwards. This commentary on Averroes’s celebrated cosmological treatise concerns the nature and properties of the heavens according to the principles of Aristotelian cosmology, and it constitutes one of Del Medigo’s most significant achievements. It attempts to tackle Averroes’s difficult text and complex arguments, engaging with crucial philosophical problems such as the incorruptibility of the heavens, divine causality, the essence of prime matter, the nature of divine providence, and heavenly influences on human beings. Del Medigo’s commentary stands out for the clarity of his language and thought, the intelligent manner in which he weaves together different sections of Averroes’s text, and its unique employment of both Hebrew and Latin sources in the course of the discussion. In fact, Del Medigo’s commentary was among the first in a long line of Renaissance commentaries on De substantia orbis by authors such as Pietro Pomponazzi and Agostino Nifo, and the edition may help to identify possible influences of Del Medigo on these renowned philosophers. The critical edition of both extant versions—Latin and Hebrew—will thus deepen our understanding of the reception of Averroes in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, shedding new light on a neglected chapter of Italian philosophical and scientific thought. The volume includes a facing-page bilingual critical edition of the Latin and Hebrew texts, a detailed introduction including a philological analysis of the manuscript sources, and a comprehensive English commentary concerning the philosophical doctrines embedded in Del Medigo’s work. It will be of interest to scholars working on medieval and Renaissance philosophy and Jewish philosophy, to those studying the history of cosmology, astrology, and science, and generally to those studying the reception of Islamic thought in the Renaissance.

Описание: Comparing Averroes' and Hegel's positions on the relation between philosophy and religion, this book explores the theme of the authorities of faith and reason, and the origin of truth, in a medieval Islamic and a modern Christian context respectively. Through an in-depth analysis of Averroes' and Hegel's parallel views on the nature of philosophical and religious discourse, Belo presents new insights into their perspectives on the relation between philosophical knowledge and religious knowledge, and the differences between philosophy and religion. In addition, Belo explores particular works which have not yet been studied by modern scholarship.

Описание: Averroes’ Middle Commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics reveals the original version, previously considered lost, of a landmark work in Arabic philosophy. Undoubtedly authored by the Cordovan thinker Averroes (1126-1198), this “middle” commentary is distinct from the Long Commentary and the Short Commentary in method, several doctrinal elements, and scope (it includes books M and N of the Stagirite’s treatise). These points and the transmission of the Middle Commentary at the crossroads of Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin traditions are addressed in the introduction, which also establishes that the work was extensively quoted by the mystical philosopher Ibn Sab?in (XIIIth c.). The edition of the text and the facing translation follow. At the end of the book are Ibn Sab?in’s quotations, along with extensive indexes.
