Описание: For nearly sixty years, the University of Oklahoma, in obedience to state law, denied admission to African Americans. Only in October 1948 did this racial barrier start to break down, when an elderly teacher named George McLaurin became the first African American to enroll at the university. McLaurin's case, championed by the NAACP, drew national attention and culminated in a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In Breaking Down Barriers, distinguished historian David W. Levy chronicles the historically significant - and at times poignant - story of McLaurin's two-year struggle to secure his rights. Through exhaustive research, Levy has uncovered as much as we can know about George McLaurin (1887-1968), a notably private person. A veteran educator, he was fully qualified for admission as a graduate student in the university's School of Education. When the university denied his application, solely on the basis of race, McLaurin received immediate assistance from the NAACP and its lead attorney Thurgood Marshall, who brilliantly defended his case in state and federal courts. On his very first day of class, as Levy details, McLaurin had to sit in a special alcove, separate from the white students in the classroom. Photographs of McLaurin in this humiliating position set off a firestorm of national outrage. Dozens of other African American men and women followed McLaurin to the university, and Levy reviews the many bizarre contortions that university officials had to perform, often against their own inclinations, to accord with the state's mandate to keep black and white students apart in classrooms, the library, cafeterias and dormitories, and the football stadium. Ultimately, in 1950, the U.S. Supreme Court, swayed by the arguments of Marshall and his co-counsel Robert Carter, ruled in McLaurin's favor. The decision, as Levy explains, stopped short of toppling the decades-old doctrine of 'separate but equal.' But the case led directly to the 1954 landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which finally declared that flawed policy unconstitutional.

Описание: Kirin Narayan's imagination was captured the very first time that, as a girl visiting the Himalayas, she heard Kangra women join their voices together in song. Returning as an anthropologist, she became fascinated by how they spoke of singing as a form of enrichment, bringing feelings of accomplishment, companionship, happiness, and even good health--all benefits of the "everyday creativity" she explores in this book. Part ethnography, part musical discovery, part poetry, part memoir, and part unforgettable portraits of creative individuals, this unique work brings this remote region in North India alive in sight and sound while celebrating the incredible powers of music in our lives.

With rare and captivating eloquence, Narayan portrays Kangra songs about difficulties on the lives of goddesses and female saints as a path to well-being. Like the intricate geometries of mandalu patterns drawn in courtyards or the subtle balance of flavors in a meal, well-crafted songs offer a variety of deeply meaningful benefits: as a way of making something of value, as a means of establishing a community of shared pleasure and skill, as a path through hardships and limitations, and as an arena of renewed possibility. Everyday Creativity makes big the small world of Kangra song and opens up new ways of thinking about what creativity is to us and why we are so compelled to engage it.

Inequalities of Love: College-Educated Black Women and the Barriers to Romance and Family

Описание:

Inequalities of Love uses the personal narratives of college-educated black women to describe the difficulties they face when trying to date, marry, and have children. While conventional wisdom suggests that all women, regardless of race, must sacrifice romance and family for advanced educations and professional careers, Averil Y. Clarke’s research reveals that educated black women’s disadvantages in romance and starting a family are consequences of a system of racial inequality and discrimination. The author analyzes the accounts of black women who repeatedly return to incompatible partners as they lose hope of finding “Mr. Right” and reject unwed parenting because it seems to affirm a negative stereotype of black women’s sexuality that is inconsistent with their personal and professional identities. She uses national survey data to compare college-educated black women’s experiences of romance, reproduction, and family to those of less-educated black women and those of white and Hispanic women with degrees. She reports that degreed black women’s lives include less marriage and sex, and more unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and unwed childbearing than college-educated white and Hispanic women. Black women’s romantic limitations matter because they constitute deprivation and constraint in romance and because they illuminate important links between race, class, and gender inequality in the United States. Clarke’s discussion of the inequities that black women experience in romance highlights the connections between individuals’ sexual and reproductive decisions, their performance of professional or elite class identities, and the avoidance of racial stigma.

Chapter 1: Introduction: Who are African Americans? (Beverly O'Bryant, Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland) (20 pages)

Chapter 1 provides an operational definition of African Americans as well as multiple definitions of African Americans used in similar contexts. Emphasis is then placed on the review of the history of African Americans from the 1800s to the present. The Chapter is divided into 6 subsections.

  • Subsection One: The History of African Americans (1800-1900)
  • Subsection Two: The History of African Americans (1901-1950)
  • Subsection Three: The History of African Americans (1951-2000)
  • Section Four: The History of African Americans (2001-2020)
  • Section Five: An Expanded view and definition of 'Who are African Americans'

Chapter 2: Barriers and access to mental health care for African Americans (Henry L. Harris, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina; & LaTonya Summers, University of Jacksonville, Jacksonville, Florida) (20 pages)

Although individuals have greater access to mental health services than ever before, it is important to be aware of societal and cultural barriers that hinder minority groups from seeking care. For example, when considering the quality and availability of culturally-responsive care provided to African Americans, several inequalities exist (Psychiatry.org, 2017). One of the greatest challenges African Americans face to seeking help is stigma associated with mental illness. Gary (2005), defines stigma as negative beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and thoughts that may cause individuals or society to treat those with a mental illness in a prejudicial manner. Other barriers include institutional discrimination, religious beliefs and spiritual activities (Taylor, Chatters & Abelson, 2012), cultural distrust of health care and mental health systems, lack of healthcare insurance, and mental health illiteracy. This chapter provides a brief history of mental illness among African Americans, identification of social and cultural barriers, implications for improving access to care (i.e., providing culturally-specific professional development, promoting culturally-relevant mental health literacy, addressing issues related to advocacy and activism, etc.), and concludes with culturally-responsive practices.

Chapter 3: Challenges mostly unique to African Americans (Linwood Vereen, Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania) (20 pages)

This Chapter focuses on the challenges mostly unique to African Americans that impact their life and existence. The unique challenges described within this chapter are race-based individual, community, and systemic biases aimed at African Americans. Specifically, in this chapter it is important to have the reader see how race-based bias, discrimination, and prejudice are the challenges that impact the education, social mobility, and socioeconomic status of the African American. The chapter continues to focus on how these unique challenges impact the daily functions of African Americans in ways such as unfair housing practices and living conditions. From here it is also important to point out how these race-based challenges of systemic discriminatory practices impact community and are being combatted through resilience and community advocacy, which are strengths of the African American community.

Chapter 4: African Americans and Mental Health: Challenges and Opportunities (Brittany Dennis, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas) (20 pages)

Mental illness is pervasive in the African-American community (APA, 2017; Degruy, 2005; Fripp & Carlson, 2017; Snowden, 1999; Williams, 2008). According to the American Psychiatric Association (2017), the majority of African Americans who have mental illness do not rece

Описание: Border enforcement is a core element of the Department of Homeland Securitys effort to control unauthorised migration, with the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as the lead agency along most of the border. Border enforcement has been an ongoing subject of congressional interest since the 1970s, when illegal immigration to the United States first registered as a serious national problem; and border security has received additional attention in the years since the terrorist attacks of 2001. This book reviews efforts to combat unauthorised migration across the Southwest border in the nearly three decades since IRCA initiated the modern era in migration control. In reviewing such efforts, the book takes stock of the current state of border security and considers lessons that may be learned about enhanced enforcement at U.S. borders. Furthermore, the title discusses key statutory authorities and requirements governing DHSs construction of barriers along the U.S. borders. It also includes appendixes listing federal laws that have been waived by DHS in furtherance of border construction projects.
