Описание: This book investigates the microstructural and mechanical properties of titanium-tantalum (TiTa) alloy formed using selective laser melting (SLM). TiTa has potential orthopaedic biomedical applications thanks to its high strength to modulus ratio. However, because it is difficult to obtain, it is still not widely used. The book describes how SLM is utilized to form this alloy, and provides a better understanding of the SLM process in porous lattice structure fabrication and its control through statistical modelling.

Shape Memory Alloy Engineering, Second Edition builds upon the success of the first edition, while embracing the advancements in new materials, new systems and new applications. Readers will gain an understanding of the intrinsic properties of SMAs and their characteristic state diagrams, allowing for the design of innovative compact actuation systems. As with the first edition, the structure remains the same in order to guide the reader from the selection of the material, including the manufacturing aspects, the integration in actuator systems or other kind of devices (as dissipation and isolation elements), and the final applications to practical problems. In addition, a new section is solely dedicated to addressing modelling and design process aspects in order to provide the users with essential tools for product development and implementation to their specific problems. It also explores recent applications, dividing between consolidated commercial applications and correlated expected developments, as well as current research activities aimed at making up new devices for innovative implementations. The book realistically discusses both the potential of these fascinating materials as well as their limitations in everyday life, and how to overcome some of those limitations in order to achieve proper design of useful SMA mechanisms.

Описание: Alloy steel is steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low-alloy steels and high-alloy steels. Most commonly, the phrase "alloy steel" refers to low-alloy steels. Alloy steels are made by combining carbon steel with one or several alloying elements, such as manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper, chromium and aluminum. These metals are added to produce specific properties that are not found in regular carbon steel. The elements are added in varying proportions (or combinations) making the material take on different aspects such as increased hardness, increased corrosion resistance, increased strength, improved formability (ductility); the weldability can also change. Alloying elements are added to achieve certain properties in the material. As a guideline, alloying elements are added in lower percentages (less than 5%) to increase strength or hardenability, or in larger percentages (over 5%) to achieve special properties, such as corrosion resistance or extreme temperature stability. Manganese, silicon, or aluminum are added during the steelmaking process to remove dissolved oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus from the melt. Manganese, silicon, nickel, and copper are added to increase strength by forming solid solutions in ferrite. Chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, and tungsten increase strength by forming second-phase carbides. Nickel and copper improve corrosion resistance in small quantities. Molybdenum helps to resist embrittlement. Zirconium, cerium, and calcium increase toughness by controlling the shape of inclusions. Sulfur, in the form of manganese sulfide, lead, bismuth, selenium, and tellurium, increases machinability. Alloying elements also have an effect on the eutectoid temperature of the steel. This book entitled Alloy Steel are devoted to new approaches and usages of stainless steels, the influence of the environments on the behavior of certain classes of steels, new structural concepts to understand some fatigue processes, new insight on strengthening mechanisms, and toughness in micro alloyed steels.

Описание: The new 2016 edition of ASM Handbook, Volume 3: Alloy Phase Diagrams is a revision of the original 1992 edition. 40% of the volume has been updated and now includes 1083 binary systems, 1095 binary diagrams, 115 ternary systems, and 406 ternary diagrams. The revised volume provides a more complete explanation of phase diagrams and their significance with the addition of new material on solid solutions and phase transformations; thermodynamics; isomorphous, eutectic, peritectic, and monotectic alloy systems; solid-state transformations; and intermediate phases. Users of this volume will gain a better understanding of phase diagram construction and alloy system interactions while having a valuable resource to aid in their research and engineering pursuits.Since the 1992 edition of this volume was published, improvements in experimental techniques have increased the accuracy of results, filling the remaining gaps of existing systems. Increasingly sophisticated computer modeling methods determine phase equilibria that could not be determined experimentally in a practical manner — resulting in numerous revisions of previously accepted phase diagrams, and predicted phase diagrams for newly assessed systems.
