Analogia Entis: On the Analogy of Being, Metaphysics, and the Act of Faith is an intellectually rigorous and systematic account of Thomas's teaching regarding the analogy of being. Steven A. Long's work stands in contradistinction to historical-doctrinal surveys and general introductions, retrieving by way of an interpretation of Aristotle and Aquinas the indispensable role that analogy of being plays for metaphysics and, consequently, for theology.
In his later writings St. Thomas did not return to questions about the analogy of being that he had answered earlier in his career. This has led most historical-textual treatments of analogy in current scholarship to the mistaken conclusion that Thomas actually changed his answers to these questions. Scholars fail to see the continuity between his treatment in the Summa theologiae and his earlier De veritate. Long's study demonstrates the coherence of St. Thomas's earlier and later analyses. It shows how Thomas's later account in the Summa theologiae necessarily presupposes his earlier teaching.
This is a book that invites the reader to a demanding and speculatively intense appreciation of the metaphysics of analogy. It will contribute significantly to the growing debate on the analogy of being.

The Semantics of Analogy is the first book-length interpretive study in English of Thomas de Vio Cajetan's (1469?-1534) classic treatise on analogy. Written in 1498, De Nominum Analogia (On the Analogy of Names) has long been treated as Cajetan's attempt to systematize Aquinas’s theory of analogy. A traditional interpretation regarded it as the official Thomistic treatise on analogy, but current scholarly consensus holds that Cajetan misinterpreted Aquinas and misunderstood the phenomenon of analogy.
Both approaches, argues Joshua P. Hochschild, ignore the philosophical and historical context and fail to accurately assess Cajetan's work. In The Semantics of Analogy, Hochschild reinterprets De Nominum Analogia as a significant philosophical treatise in its own right. He addresses some of the most well-known criticisms of Cajetan's analogy theory and explicates the later chapters of De Nominum Analogia, which are usually ignored by commentators. He demonstrates that Cajetan was aware of the limits of semantic analysis, had a sophisticated view of the relationship between semantics and metaphysics, and expressed perceptive insights about concept formation and hermeneutics that are of continuing philosophical relevance.
As one of the pillars of the nouvelle thologie movement, a main influence upon the Second Vatican Council, and one of the few figures to complete a full-scale multi-volume systematics, Hans Urs von Balthasar is undoubtedly one of the towering figures of twentieth-century theology. Until now, the structural undergirding of von Balthasars main contribution, a weighty 15-volume, three-part triptych dogmatics, has not been assessed. In this volume, the author presents an analysis of von Balthasars work in dogmatics and provides the structural linchpin for understanding the whole of this massive (and massively important) systematic theology by reconstructing the metaphysics of von Balthasar. Taking the person of Jesus Christ as the metaphysical starting point, the project highlights the fundamental connections to key doctrinal, historical, and philosophical issues. This is a critical volume for professors, scholars, and students in systematic theology, philosophical theology, and the study of twentieth-century Catholic and Protestant theology and history.

Описание: D'Ettore's book is one of the best monographs on this subject in at least the last fifty years, suitably elaborated with the most updated sources and secondary literature and with a true philosophical understanding that, together with a rigorously historical procedure, makes it particularly understandable and useful. It makes us better understand the importance of 'post-Thomasian' Thomism, when his disciples tried to solve a question to which Aquinas had not yet given any or very vague answers and when one has to choose between different texts of Thomas and develop those more sustainable positions with reasonable arguments and independent of his own authority.""—Angelicum""Markedly valuable as an example of a luminous approach to complex issues, developing coherently all the important ideas and stages of the development of Aquinas' doctrine of analogy in the writings of Thomists. Recommended to all those who are interested in the teachings of Thomas Aquinas (in which analogy maintains a crucial role), in Thomism as such, or in the doctrine of analogy itself, which is still the cornerstone in metaphysics and natural theology when articulating the relationship between God, the world and creatures.""—European Journal for the Study of Thomas Aquinas""D'Ettore teaches Thomists an important lesson: fidelity to the Thomist tradition is measured not by fidelity to the texts of Aquinas but to the pursuit of truth exhibited by Aquinas's enquiries. Before reading this book, I knew my nescience on analogy ran deep, I am grateful to D'Ettore for helping me sound how many fathoms deeper it is and for trailblazing a way through the tricky terrain of Thomist answers to analogical problems.""—Reviews in Religion and Theology

Analogical thought is fundamental to creativity. The use of analogy can help to solve problems, make connections between disciplines, and use those relations to form original solutions.
In Analogy and Design, Andrea Ponsi considers the role of analogical thought in architectural design. Almost all work in design and architecture is the result of analogical thinking, with respect to systems derived from nature, technical and scientific models, artistic experiences, and above all past models of architecture or objects. Ponsi considers the history of architecture through a series of examples that demonstrate the value of analogy as both creative technique and didactic tool.
As an architect and product designer, Ponsi himself operates on a set of principles he terms "analogous design"--a theory he developed that involves breaking down images into abstract elements, analyzing them, and then conceptually reassembling them in another form as a sort of parallel composition. In Analogy and Design, he looks at the principal models designers have utilized as their reference from the beginning to our own day: primary analogies, that is to say the human body, nature, and the abstract universe of signs; disciplinary analogies, taken from already existing examples of architecture and design; and analogies from outside the field, such as from music, literature, and the visual arts. The components are very different, but they maintain a similar relationship to each other. This methodology, Ponsi maintains, can be applied to compositions of a wide variety of types, including buildings, landscapes, household products, furniture, music, and literature.
Merging scientific and academic research--so often limited to a specialized audience--Analogy and Design lays down the principles of analogous design, enabling a student or practitioner to "see" works and materials in a new way.
