Описание: Congratulations to Adriana Brodsky and Raanan Rein whose edited volume has been chosen as the winner of the 2013 Latin American Jewish Studies Association Book Prize! The New Jewish Argentina aims at filling in important lacunae in the existing historiography of Jewish Argentines. Moving away from the political history of the organized community, most articles are devoted to social and cultural history, including unaffiliated Jews, women and gender, criminals, printing presses and book stores. These essays, written by scholars from various countries, consider the tensions between the national and the trans-national and offer a mosaic of identities which is relevant to all interested in Jewish history, Argentine history and students of ethnicity and diaspora. This collection problematizes the existing image of Jewish-Argentines and looks at Jews not just as persecuted ethnics, idealized agricultural workers, or as political actors in Zionist politics.?"This book is a must-read for students and scholars interested in immigration to Latin America, Ethnic History, and Jewish Studies, but its readership could extend to anybody who is interested in this chapter of social and cultural history."Ariana Huberman, Haverford CollegeThis book is also available in paperback.

Описание: At the end of his sophomore year at Columbia, young go-getter Ari Edelman returns to his modest family home on Long Island and takes a job as a handyman at Ocean House, the iconic Hamptons estate of wealthy author Edward Vann. As the summer advances, so does Ari's position in Edward's life, and he even helps to shape Edward's current novel. But the ambitious Ari has always wanted more than what life tends to offer, and by the time he reaches middle age, Ari has constructed a fantasy of that 1950s summer starring an alter ego named Ned Deane, who served as Edward's close friend, cowriter, and eventual lover. Inspired by Andr Gide's Les Faux-monnayeurs (The Counterfeiters), Ed Cone has constructed a sweeping literary drama of one man's dissatisfaction with the tedium of normal life. Through closely paralleled storylines, The Counterfeiter cleverly unfolds to reveal the fluid nature of identity, sexuality, and love.
This book analyzes the relative balance of bargaining power between governments and the banks in charge of underwriting their debt during the first financial globalization. Brazil and Mexico, both indebted countries that underwent major changes in reputation and negotiating power as they faced financial crises, provide valuable case studies of government strategies for obtaining the best possible outcomes. Previous literature has focused on bankers’ perspectives and emphasized that debtors were submissive during negotiations, but Weller finds that governments’ negotiating power varied over time. He presents a new analytical framework that interprets when and why officials were likely to negotiate loans more or less effectively, with newly uncovered primary sources from debtors’ and creditors’ archives suggesting key causes of variation: fiscal accounts, political stability, and creditors’ exposure and reputation.

Описание: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Описание: During the run-up to the 1888 presidential election, Americans flocked to party rallies, marched in endless parades, and participated zealously in the political process. This book shows how this presidential contest not only exemplified Gilded Age politics but also marked a major shift from divisive sectional rhetoric to voters` economic concerns.

Описание: This quarterly journal, commonly called simply "The Register," is certainly the oldest, and arguably the best, genealogical periodical published in the United States. Within its volumes researchers will find some of the most valuable genealogical compilations and source record transcriptions to be found anywhere. It is difficult, one might even say foolhardy, to attempt to do research on New England families without reference to this important series. However, copies of the original editions of these volumes are becoming increasingly difficult to find, so Heritage Books has reprinted the early volumes of this important serial in order to make them more accessible to the rank and file genealogist. Each volume has an index, and in addition, a comprehensive index to the first fifty volumes is also available. In the description below it is only possible to touch on some of the main articles-each volume also contains much additional material. Genealogies: Ames, Barrett, Bulkley, Gilbert, Hall, Hathorne, Houghton, Jolliffe, Lane, Ludlow, Pope, Roberts, Sedgwick, Tarbox, Thurston. Biographical sketches: Aaron Cleveland, Maria B. Craig, Joshua E. Crane, Capt. John Cutler, Edmund H. Cutts, John Hasey, John Holbrooke, John Jacob, Martha R. McFadden, Nicholas Manning, Otis F. Manson, John Pierce, Jonathan Remington, Nathaniel Reynolds, Augustus E. Sanderson, Paul R. Wentworth, William H. Wentworth, John Wight, John Whipple. Other records: Boston marriages, 1717-1769; Colchester, Conn.; Alumni of William and Mary College and Yale College who have held official position; Town list of volunteers in the War for the Preservation of the Union; Soldiers in King Philip's War; Index to Place Names for Register volumes 1-41; Chart of Cape Cod early in the 1700s; List of American prisoners taken at the battle of Bunker Hill; American graduates in medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
