Shaken by military defeat and economic depression after War World I, Germans sought to restore their nation's dignity and power. In this context the National Socialist Party, with its promise of a revivified Germany, drew supporters. Among the most zealous were a number of Catholic clergymen known as "brown priests" who volunteered as Nazi propagandists. In this insightful study, Spicer unearths a dark subchapter in Roman Catholic history, introduces the principal clergymen who participated in the Nazi movement, examines their motives, details their advocacy of National Socialism, and explores the consequences of their political activism.
Some brown priests, particularly war veterans, advocated National Socialism because it appealed to their patriotic ardor. Others had less laudatory motives: disaffection with clerical life, conflicts with Church superiors, or ambition for personal power and fame. Whatever their individual motives, they employed their skills as orators, writers, and teachers to proclaim the message of Nazism. Especially during the early 1930s, when the Church forbade membership in the party, these clergymen strove to prove that Catholicism was compatible with National Socialism, thereby justifying their support of Nazi ideology. Father Dr. Philipp Haeuser, a scholar and pastor, went so far as to promote antisemitism while deifying Adolf Hitler. The F?hrer's antisemitism, Spicer argues, did not deter clergymen such as Haeuser because, although the Church officially rejected the Nazis' extreme racism, Catholic teachings tolerated hostility toward Jews by blaming them for Christ's crucifixion.
While a handful of brown priests enjoyed the forbearance of their bishops, others endured reprimand or even dismissal; a few found new vocations with the Third Reich. After the fall of the Reich, the most visible brown priests faced trial for their part in the crimes of National Socialism, a movement they had once so earnestly supported.
In addition to this intriguing history about clergymen trying to reconcile faith and politics, Spicer provides a master list—verified by extensive research in Church and government archives—of Catholic clergy who publicly supported National Socialism.

First published in 1984. The Victorian clergy occupied a uniquely prominent position in English society. Their church generated continual and often rancorous debate and they played an important part in the local provision of education, welfare and justice. Politically, also, they were never negligible. But, while in 1830 the clergy still constituted England's largest and wealthiest professional body, by 1914 their position was increasingly marginal. This title examines these changes and the issues in which the clergy was facing during this transition. The Victorian Clergy will be of particular interest to students of history.

Описание: After serving two and a half years as a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front, Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote that he would ""a thousand times rather be throwing grenades or handling a machine gun than be supernumerary as I am now."" Mobilized by military laws dating to 1889 and 1905 that opened the clergy's ranks to conscription and removed their exemption from combat, Teilhard and his fellow men of the cloth served France in the tens of thousands - and nearly half of them served in combat positions. Patriot Priests tells us how these men came to be at war and how their experiences transformed them and French society at large. The letters and diaries of these priests reveal how they adapted to the battlefields of World War I. Influenced by patriotic ideals of bravery, they went into the war hoping to make converts for the Catholic Church, which had long been marginalized by the Third Republic's secularizing policies. But through direct fraternal contact with their fellow soldiers, they came out with a sense of common identity and comradeship. Historian Anita Rasi May documents how these clergymen used their religious values of sacrifice to define the meaning of the war for themselves and for their comrades, even as the discipline of military life effectively transformed them from missionaries into soldiers. In turn, their courage and solicitous care for their fellow soldiers won them new respect and earned the Church renewed esteem in postwar French society. These clergymen's story, recounted here for the first time, elucidates a unique milestone of church-state relations in France. Their experiences - their hopes and fears, their struggles to reconcile their mission of peace with the demands of war, and their sense of belonging to France as well as to the Church - reveal a new perspective on the Great War.
For clergy, retirement is an opportunity--and a matter of the soul. The topic of retirement is critical for an increasing number of clergy, but it is often ignored--something many clergy would rather not think about. After decades of leadership, retirement can seem more like an obstacle--or even like oblivion--than an opportunity. Stepping Aside, Moving Ahead offers guidance for any clergyperson within a decade of retirement. Author Steve Harper writes in the form of letters to a fictitious "every-pastor." Through these compassionate and instructive letters, the author dialogues with clergy who are just beginning to think about what retirement might bring and with those who stand on the brink of it. He guides the reader through the entire process of planning for retirement: from the initial questions about timing, to financial and other practical concerns, to issues of call and legacy, and more. Steve Harper's wise counsel and pastoral voice is just what clergy need. "Retirement is a spiritual question for pastors. Having answered the call of God to lifetime ministry, how does a pastor assume the role of a retiree? Steve Harper answers the question with spiritual insights and practical suggestions that affirm retirement as a chapter in God's call leading us to new depths of understanding in renewal and new heights of joy in redeployment." --David McKenna, President Emeritus, Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, KY "Stepping Aside, Moving Ahead offers theological, personal, and practical advice for anyone who is considering or who is already in retirement. Harper includes a comprehensive spectrum of the issues around clergy retirement. His message is clear: there is abundant life after retirement. This book should be given to every clergy at preretirement seminars in order to prepare servant leaders for this fruitful chapter in their lives." --Peggy A. Johnson, Bishop, Philadelphia Area, UMC
"This book is an excellent tool for boomers and clergy ... who see great significance in living our legacy of love and faith as we mentor others " --Clayton L. Smith, Executive Pastor, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection

Описание: A Victorian parsonage was a `religious family enterprise`, a showcase of ruling ideas, the headquarters of parish charities and a point of connection for multilayered networks in and outside the parish. This book focuses on the lives of women brought up in this setting, as the Church of England steered its way through the secularisation of society.
Many members of the clergy are committed to their vocation, yet struggle to remain engaged and energized. The pressures of congregational and family commitments take their toll.
Clergy are part of a profession like no other. However you define it, the label "clergy" represents a collection of roles that come together in various combinations based on religion, congregational size and congregational structure. Frustration can build when clergy think they are delivering what is expected of them and feedback (formal or informal) is received to indicate expectations are not being met. Worse, in the absence of feedback, clergy can be caught off guard if they assume everything is fine only to learn unexpectedly everything is not fine.
This book will help you examine the roles you inhabit and the roles of others around you. You will also be challenged to look at old problems in a new way and offered tools to unwind the complexities of your personal situation and develop new habits to manage expectations.
