Описание:

In a new account of the relationship between Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Christina Zwarg recreates a feminist conversation that has gone unheard. In Zwargs view, the intimate, yet restrained, letters between the two writers are most significant in confronting the challenges posed by gender and desire. Focusing on their exploration of Charles Fouriers utopianism and particularly his concept of passionate attraction, Zwarg offers the only detailed reading of Emersons letters to Fuller.

Описание:

Our Lady of Victorian Feminism is about three nineteenth-century women, Protestants by background and feminists by conviction, who are curiously and crucially linked by their extensive use of the Madonna in arguments designed to empower women.

In the field of Victorian studies, few scholars have looked beyond the customary identification of the Christian Madonna with the Victorian feminine ideal—the domestic Madonna or the Angel in the House. Kimberly VanEsveld Adams shows, however, that these three Victorian writers made extensive use of the Madonna in feminist arguments. They were able to see this figure in new ways, freely appropriating the images of independent, powerful, and wise Virgin Mothers.

In addition to contributions in the fields of literary criticism, art history, and religious studies, Our Lady of Victorian Feminism places a needed emphasis on the connections between the intellectuals and the activists of the nineteenth-century women's movement. It also draws attention to an often neglected strain of feminist thought, essentialist feminism, which proclaimed sexual equality as well as difference, enabling the three writers to make one of their most radical arguments, that women and men are made in the image of the Virgin Mother and the Son, the two faces of the divine.

Описание:

The egotism that fuels the desire for greatness has been associated exclusively with men, according to one feminist view; yet many women cannot suppress the need to strive for greatness. In this forceful and compelling book, Alison Booth traces through the novels, essays, and other writings of George Eliot and Virginia Woolf radically conflicting attitudes on the part of each toward the possibility of feminine greatness. Examining the achievements of Eliot and Woolf in their social contexts, she provides a challenging model of feminist historical criticism.

Описание:

The implicit link between white women and "the dark races" recurs persistently in nineteenth-century English fiction. Imperialism at Home examines the metaphorical use of race by three nineteenth-century women novelists: Charlotte Bront?, Emily Bront?, and George Eliot. Susan Meyer argues that each of these domestic novelists uses race relations as a metaphor through which to explore the relationships between men and women at home in England.

In the fiction of, for example, Anthony Trollope and Charles Dickens, as in nineteenth-century culture more generally, the subtle and not-so-subtle comparison of white women and people of color is used to suggest their mutual inferiority. The Bronte sisters and George Eliot responded to this comparison, Meyer contends, transforming it for their own purposes. Through this central metaphor, these women novelists work out a sometimes contentious relationship to established hierarchies of race and gender. Their feminist impulses, in combination with their use of race as a metaphor, Meyer argues, produce at times a surprising, if partial, critique of empire. Through readings of Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Mill on the Floss, Daniel Deronda, and Charlotte Bront?'s African juvenilia, Meyer traces the aesthetically and ideologically complex workings of the racial metaphor. Her analysis is supported by careful attention to textual details and thorough grounding in recent scholarship on the idea of race, and on literature and imperialism.

Описание: When Count Guido Franceschini was tried by a Roman court in 1698 for the rape and murder of his young wife Pompilia, he had the church, the state, and \u201call of sensible Rome\u201d supporting him. Their cynical mandate sprang from the traditional belief that in a patriarchal society the male should wield absolute power, including the power of life and death, over the female. In Pompilia, Brady discusses how Browning’s masterpiece exposes the pervasive misogyny of patriarchal culture justified in the principle of honoris causa jealously guarded by church and state.

From his letters it is clear that the poet parallels the Rome of the Franceschini trial with the patriarchy of Victorian England. Tracing the classical sources of institutionalized misogyny — from Aristotle to Justinian to Livy, from Genesis through the New Testament — Brady shows how ancient and pervasive is the patriarchal system and argues that the woman thus defined by traditional theology is identical to the pornographer’s definition of woman: the woman made for the man.

Confronting the problem of sexual cynicism among interpreters of The Ring and the Book from Thomas Carlyle to the present, Brady examines the character of Pompilia — the victim on trial essentially for the crime of being raped and murdered. She examines the explicitly sexual degradation of Pompilia by Guido and his priest brother, and she points out the sexual bias rampant in the trial proceedings, a bias that reveals the ecclesiastical corruption surrounding the institution of marriage.

One of the first book-length studies of Browning’s feminism, Brady’s study makes valuable interpretive contributions to The Ring and the Book, and should earn the poem new readers among both feminists and traditionalists.
