Описание:

Making Vancouver explores social relationships in Vancouver from 1863 to 1913. It considers how urbanization structured social boundaries among Burrard Inlets increasingly large population and is premised on the belief that, in studying social boundaries, historians must abandon single category forms of analysis and build into their research strategies the capacity to explore complexity. Robert McDonald thus traces the relationship between the two forms of identify, class and status, for the whole of Vancouver society.

The book starts with the years when settlement on Burrard Inlet centred around two lumber mills, explores periods of elite dominance of city institutions and then of growing social and political conflict following the arrival of the railway, examines the heightening of class tensions at the turn of the century, charts economic growth during the boom years before the war, and concludes with three chapters on the tripartite status hierarchy that emerged in concert with that of a class dichotomy. It reveals a western city that was neither egalitarian nor closed to opportunity. Vancouver up to the pre-war crash of 1913 was open and dynamic. The rapidity of growth, easy access to resources, narrow industrial base, and influence of ethnicity and race softened the thrust towards class division inherent in capitalism. Far more powerful in directing social relations was the quest for status, creating a social structure that was no less hierarchical than that predicted by class theory but much more fluid. The social boundary that separated the working class from others is revealed as a division that for much of the pre-war boom period divided Vancouver society more fundamentally than the boundary separating labour from capital.

Описание: This is the story of the Asahi, a Japanese Canadian baseball team that was formed in 1914 and competed in Vancouver's Caucasian leagues between 1918 and 1941. Using a strategy called "brain ball," the smaller Japanese defeated the larger white teams and won a number of championships. This describes what happened to some of these Asahi players after Pearl Harbor when British Columbia's Japanese were sent to internment camps in the province's interior. Here they played an important role in establishing baseball leagues. Following the war, many former Asahis came to eastern Canada where they continued to play an important role in baseball as they began new lives. There is a second story here as well. It is about a former Asahi fan who was determined that the Asahi legend would not die and how she insured that what they meant to the Japanese community before World War II would never be forgotten.

Описание:

In the early years of the Great Depression, thousands of unemployedhomeless transients settled into Vancouver’s “hobojungle.” The jungle operated as a distinct community, in whichgoods were exchanged and shared directly, without benefit of currency. But as the transients moved from the jungles to the city, they madeinnumerable demands on Vancouver’s Relief Department, consumingfinancial resources at a rate that threatened the city with bankruptcy.McCallum argues that, threatened by this “ungovernablesociety,” Vancouver’s Relief Department employed Fordistmanagement methods that ultimately stripped the transients of theirindividuality. Hobohemia and the Crucifixion Machineexplores the connections between the history of transiency and that ofFordism, offering a new interpretation of the economic and politicalcrises that wracked Canada in the early years of the GreatDepression.

Описание:

HIstory turns into mystery when the authors begin to research the oral stories about Wade Baker's ancestor, Third Lieutenant Joseph Baker, mapmaker on HMS Discovery. from 1791 to 1795. Memories from Grannie Lizzie and other Coast Salish and Hawaiian elders lead to authentic stories about Captain Vancouver, and his officer's relationships with Kings, Queens and royal families in their kingdoms in North America and Hawaii.

When Wade and Mary started their research, they did not realize how extensively this important piece of Pacific West Coast history had been airbrushed from the records. Over eight years of investigation with several museums around the world as well as many conversations and interviews with Maui and Vancouver cultural elders, uncover a very different Captain Vancouver than the man portrayed in mainstream history. Stories revealed about the respectful social and trading interactions with the native peoples are compelling. moving. and insightful. The book includes many photos of knowledge keepers, as well as protocols around chieftanships as Wade Baker's late mother Emily Nelson Baker was a four copper chieftain. Maps and detailed "observations of the day" from log books and journals are included with permission from the various museums consulted. A Chapter on Captain Cook gives an alternate and indigenous version of events. Captain Vancouver was a young midshipman on the ship, and was a witness to the events that shaped his character for future voyages.

The authors were honoured to meet the British descendants of Lt. Baker in 2017, and a new epilogue from 2018 details the meeting and reconciliation that occurred.

The Hidden Journals will forever change how you think about the indigenous people and their history, and brings understanding to the profound effects that the later historical distortions of those times had on the subconscious beliefs we carry today. The 1790's to the early 1800's was a time of high-level friendships between cultures, and an era of spiritual and mystical values about the land, water and sky. This open-hearted adventure is an inspiration for these times, and a call to the reader to pick up the torch and continue their own journeys of discovery.

The book was chosen for an Honourable Mention at the Whistler Independent Author's Festival Awards, and the authors were interviewed by Shelagh Rogers at CBC Radio for The Next Chapter series.

Описание: Media for diasporic communities have emerged in major cities and reflect a multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual reality. But do these media serve their respective communities exclusively, or are they available and accessible to members of greater society at large? Diasporic Media beyond the Diaspora explores structural and institutional challenges and opportunities for these media and suggests policy directions with the aim of fostering broader intercultural dialogue. Using case studies of Korean media in Vancouver and Los Angeles, Sherry Yu examines the potential of an intercultural media system for culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse societies.

Описание: A fascinating pictorial history of North Vancouver city and district in British Columbia, covering over 90 locations scattered around the length and breadth of the region. Packed with old and new photos, this book takes readers on a light-hearted tour of North Vancouvers past. Its not just another local-history book. Its an experience in time travel! Youll stop at over 90 sites, scattered around the length and breadth of the city and district. Sometimes you arrive at a site in the past, and jump to the present. Or you might arrive in the present and travel back in time. Imagine walking by the seashore along a lovely tree-lined pedestrian promenade a century ago; today finds you dodging heavy traffic in a modern commercial district. Or perhaps youre staying in a first-class hotel far up the Capilano Valley in the early 1900s; fast-forward to the present and youre underwater behind a dam. Or stand in a quiet neighbourhood and see in your mind the large, noisy, lumber mill that used to be here. Whats great is you dont have to start at the beginning of the book. Plunge-in anywhere. Flip pages forward or back. A wonderful gift for both young and old. Enjoy it lounging around home -- or take it to actual North Vancouver sites and compare past and present for yourself. This is the updated second edition.
