Описание: Media for diasporic communities have emerged in major cities and reflect a multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual reality. But do these media serve their respective communities exclusively, or are they available and accessible to members of greater society at large? Diasporic Media beyond the Diaspora explores structural and institutional challenges and opportunities for these media and suggests policy directions with the aim of fostering broader intercultural dialogue. Using case studies of Korean media in Vancouver and Los Angeles, Sherry Yu examines the potential of an intercultural media system for culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse societies.

This previously unknown collection of letters lets us experiencecolonial British Columbia through the eyes of a young British navalofficer who spent three years on Vancouver Island commanding a RoyalNavy gunboat during the Cariboo gold rush.
A keen observer of life in the new world, Edmund Hope Verneycorresponded on a regular basis with his father, a prominent BritishMP. In his letters, which are filled with lively narration anddescription, candid commentary, and fascinating personal detail, hetalks about having 'the opportunity to observe a colony in [itsfirst] stage of existence' and to 'watch the development of acommunity.'
To Share, Not Surrender offers an entirely new approach to assessing Indigenous-settler conflict over land, opening scholarship to the public and augmenting it with First Nations community expertise. Informed by cel’a?’en – “our culture, the way of our people” – this multivocal work of essays traces the transition from treaty-making in the colony of Vancouver Island to reserve formation in the colony of British Columbia. The collection also publishes translations/interpretations of the treaties into the SEN?O?EN and Lekwungen languages. An all-embracing exploration of the struggle over land, To Share, Not Surrender advances the urgent task of reconciliation in Canada.

Описание: The town of Ladysmith was one of the most important coal-mining communities on Vancouver Island during the early twentieth century. The Ladysmith miners had a reputation for radicalism and militancy and engaged in bitter struggles for union recognition and economic justice, most notably the Great Strike of 1912-14. This strike, one of the longest and most violent labour disputes in Canadian history, marked a watershed in the history of the town and the coal industry.
In Islands of Truth, Daniel Clayton examines a series of encounters with the Native peoples and territory of Vancouver Island in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although he focuses on a particular region and period, Clayton also meditates on how representations of land and people, and studies of the past, serve and shape specific interests, and how the dawn of Native-Western contact in this part of the world might be studied 200 years later, in the light of ongoing struggles between Natives and non-Natives over land and cultural status.
Between the 1770s and 1850s, the Native people of Vancouver Island were engaged by three sets of forces that were of general importance in the history of Western overseas expansion: the West's scientific exploration of the world in the Age of Enlightenment; capitalist practices of exchange; and the geopolitics of nation-state rivalry. Islands of Truth discusses these developments, the geographies they worked through, and the stories about land, identity, and empire stemming from this period that have shaped understanding of British Columbia's past and present.
Clayton questions premises underlying much of present B.C. historical writing, arguing that international literature offers more fruitful ways of framing local historical experiences. Islands of Truth is a timely, provocative, and vital contribution to post-colonial studies.

HIstory turns into mystery when the authors begin to research the oral stories about Wade Baker's ancestor, Third Lieutenant Joseph Baker, mapmaker on HMS Discovery. from 1791 to 1795. Memories from Grannie Lizzie and other Coast Salish and Hawaiian elders lead to authentic stories about Captain Vancouver, and his officer's relationships with Kings, Queens and royal families in their kingdoms in North America and Hawaii.
When Wade and Mary started their research, they did not realize how extensively this important piece of Pacific West Coast history had been airbrushed from the records. Over eight years of investigation with several museums around the world as well as many conversations and interviews with Maui and Vancouver cultural elders, uncover a very different Captain Vancouver than the man portrayed in mainstream history. Stories revealed about the respectful social and trading interactions with the native peoples are compelling. moving. and insightful. The book includes many photos of knowledge keepers, as well as protocols around chieftanships as Wade Baker's late mother Emily Nelson Baker was a four copper chieftain. Maps and detailed "observations of the day" from log books and journals are included with permission from the various museums consulted. A Chapter on Captain Cook gives an alternate and indigenous version of events. Captain Vancouver was a young midshipman on the ship, and was a witness to the events that shaped his character for future voyages.
The authors were honoured to meet the British descendants of Lt. Baker in 2017, and a new epilogue from 2018 details the meeting and reconciliation that occurred.
The Hidden Journals will forever change how you think about the indigenous people and their history, and brings understanding to the profound effects that the later historical distortions of those times had on the subconscious beliefs we carry today. The 1790's to the early 1800's was a time of high-level friendships between cultures, and an era of spiritual and mystical values about the land, water and sky. This open-hearted adventure is an inspiration for these times, and a call to the reader to pick up the torch and continue their own journeys of discovery.
The book was chosen for an Honourable Mention at the Whistler Independent Author's Festival Awards, and the authors were interviewed by Shelagh Rogers at CBC Radio for The Next Chapter series.
