At the time of its publication in 1908, Pomo Indian Basketry was the most complete and detailed study of a single Native American basketry tradition. The work, prepared as Samuel Barrett's doctoral dissertation, earned the author the first Ph.D. in anthropology at UC Berkeley. Among its contents are sections devoted to materials, techniques, forms, and designs. This edition is supplemented with two early articles, "Basket Designs of the Pomo Indians" by Barrett (1905) and "California Basketry and the Pomo" by his teacher Alfred Kroeber (1909). Sherrie Smith-Ferri's introduction reviews Barrett's early life and research and identifies the human sources of Barrett's collections and information--a community of talented Pomoan basket weavers.
Sherrie Smith-Ferri (Dry Creek Pomo/Bodega Miwok) is a curator at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, California.

Baskets made of baleen, the fibrous substance found in the mouths of plankton-eating whales--a malleable and durable material that once had commercial uses equivalent to those of plastics today--were first created by Alaska Natives in the early years of the twentieth century. Because they were made for the tourist trade, they were initially disdained by scholars and collectors, but today they have joined other art forms as a highly prized symbol of native identity. Baskets of exquisite workmanship, often topped with fanciful ivory carvings, have been created for almost a century, contributing significantly to the livelihood of their makers in the Arctic villages of Barrow, Point Hope, Wainwright, and Point Lay, Alaska.
Baleen Basketry of the North Alaskan Eskimo, originally published in 1983, was the first book on this unusual basket form. In this completely redesigned edition, it remains the most informative work on baleen baskets, covering their history, characteristics, and construction, as well as profiling their makers. Illustrations of the basketmakers at work and line drawings showing the methods of construction are a charming addition to this book, which belongs in the library of all those with an interest in the art of basketry and in Alaskan Native arts in general.

Описание: Excerpt from Basketry and Weaving Undoubtedly the first vessels used by man were shells and gourds. Later he made receptacles of clay. In order more conveniently to carry these, a rude sort of twisted netting was made. The clay broke easily, and he found that the net ted cover still served him. He gradually improved upon this, and different forms of baskets were the result. From this crude beginning there has grown up through the ages an art that to-day supplies us with necessities and luxuries. Indeed, if we were to eliminate woven products from our homes, in the form of carpets, rugs, curtains, linen and clothing, we should have little left of our boasted civilization. In his early school life the child contrasts the simple build ing, weaving and home life of early days with the complex building, weaving and life of to - day. He constructs minia ture huts, spins and weaves wool for miniature garments and models clay dishes. He is taught to observe nature as did early man, who depended upon the seasons to furnish his food supply. He must know when to sow the seed and how to harvest and store it. When he wishes to dye his weaving materials, he must go to nature for his colors. In searching for materials, the child is taken to the heart of Africa, where he finds the natives constructing their homes and clothing from the fiber of the palm. He becomes more interested in geography. And is enabled to form more perfect images of the people of other lands and their occupations. He also learns of the struggle of mankind to supply his needs. Автор: Stephanie Bunn, Victoria Mitchell Название: The Material Culture of Basketry: Practice, Skill and Embodied Knowledge ISBN: 1350359904 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781350359901 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 29560.00 T Наличие на складе: Поставка под заказ. Описание: This book celebrates basketry as a culturally significant skilled practice and as a theoretically rich discipline which has much to offer contemporary society. While sometimes understudied and underappreciated, it has much in common with mathematics and engineering, art, craft and design, and can also act as a socially beneficial source of skill and care. Contributors show how local knowledge of materials, plants and place are central to the craft. Case studies include the skill in weaverbird nest building (challenging how we perceive learning in craft and nature), an engineer’s perspective on twining Peruvian grass bridges, and the local knowledge embodied in Pacific plaited patterns and knots. Photo-essays explore materials and techniques from the point of view of artists, anthropologists and mathematicians, revealing how the structure and skill in basketwork illustrate a significant form of textile technology. Thus, the book demonstrates that the textures, patterns and geometric forms that emerge through basketwork reflect an embodied knowledge which expresses mathematical and engineering comprehension. The therapeutic value of the craft is recognised through a selection of case studies which consider basketry as a healing process for patients with brain injury, mental health problems, and as a memory aid for people living with dementia. This reclaims basketry’s significant role in occupational therapy as an agent of recovery and well–being. Basketry's inherently sustainable nature is also considered, demonstrating the continuation of basketry in spite of handwork’s general decline and profiling new and recycled materials. Above all, the book envisages basketry as an intellectually rewarding means of knowing. It presents the craft as embodying care for skilled making and for the social and natural environments in which it flourishes.
