Описание:

In More Than Medicine, LaTonya J. Trotter chronicles the everyday work of a group of nurse practitioners (NPs) working on the front lines of the American health care crisis as they cared for four hundred African American older adults living with poor health and limited means. Trotter describes how these NPs practiced an inclusive form of care work that addressed medical, social, and organizational problems that often accompany poverty. In solving this expanded terrain of problems from inside the clinic, these NPs were not only solving a broader set of concerns for their patients; they became a professional solution for managing difficult people for both their employer and the state. Through More Than Medicine, we discover that the problems found in the NP's exam room are as much a product of our nation's disinvestment in social problems as of physician scarcity or rising costs.

Описание: Strategic planning encompasses much more than simply writing up a strategic plan and calling it a day. Successful strategic planning also requires developing the analytical skills leaders need to overcome current challenges while figuring out how to thrive well into the future. This book shows the way. Strategic Analysis for Healthcare: Concepts and Practical Applications presents a straightforward, step-by-step approach to strategic analysis and strategy development in healthcare. Through its clear explanations of theoretical concepts, supported by examples and applied exercises, the book provides readers with practical methods for developing healthcare strategy. This second edition includes the following new features and more: a brand-new chapter on population heath, an increasingly important approach to value-based care; three additional new chapters on strategic directional indicators, strategy selection and justification, and implementation plans and contingency planning; a substantially rewritten chapter on financial fit assessment and projection; and significant updates to many sections and topics, including financial analysis, competitive benchmarking, and organizational culture. With its short, engaging chapters, this workbook can be used as a stand-alone, applied-learning tool or in conjunction with an additional textbook. Perforated pages allow for easy use of the exercises as gradable assignments. The authors also mapped specific chapters from this book that can be taught alongside two other Health Administration Press titles, Strategic Healthcare Management, Planning and Execution, Second Edition, and Healthcare Strategic Planning, Fourth Edition. Leaders must be able to assess and strategically manage change in healthcare, as well as envision the future from a predictive, competitive, and visionary perspective. This book is designed to provide current and future leaders alike with the knowledge and guidance to do so.

Описание:

Biomedicine in an Unstable Place is the story of people's struggle to make biomedicine work in a public hospital in Papua New Guinea. It is a story encompassing the history of hospital infrastructures as sites of colonial and postcolonial governance, the simultaneous production of Papua New Guinea as a site of global medical research and public health, and people's encounters with urban institutions and biomedical technologies. In Papua New Guinea, a century of state building has weakened already inadequate colonial infrastructures, and people experience the hospital as a space of institutional, medical, and ontological instability.

In the hospital's clinics, biomedical practitioners struggle amid severe resource shortages to make the diseased body visible and knowable to the clinical gaze. That struggle is entangled with attempts by doctors, nurses, and patients to make themselves visible to external others—to kin, clinical experts, global scientists, politicians, and international development workers—as socially recognizable and valuable persons. Here hospital infrastructures emerge as relational technologies that are fundamentally fragile but also offer crucial opportunities for making people visible and knowable in new, unpredictable, and powerful ways.

Описание: Many organizations know employee engagement is essential to success, but few approach it in the right way. Bonuses, thank-you notes, employee-of-the-month awards, and similar initiatives may produce temporary boosts in morale but do not build a long-term culture of true engagement. Reigniting Employee Engagement: A Guide to Rediscovering Purpose and Meaning in Healthcare presents a simple model for creating sustainable employee engagement—now more elusive than ever because of ongoing changes in healthcare delivery. Rising caregiver burnout is an especially critical issue, and this book provides a method for refocusing on basic human needs to reenergize the healthcare workforce.

Author Tom Atchison explores the psychology of why and how people commit to their work, while debunking many myths, such as money being the best motivator. Each chapter features an interview with a successful healthcare executive who offers perspective and advice on how best to approach employee engagement. These “performance profiles” allow readers to see how the book’s model applies to real-world scenarios in healthcare.

Описание: Future healthcare leaders: Do you have an obligation to serve the common good? If your answer to this ethical question is yes, then you need a working knowledge of health policy. An understanding of how policy decisions are made gives healthcare leaders a knowledge base from which they can turn what once appeared to be limitations or obstacles into opportunities to facilitate better access to care, improve the quality of care, and more effectively manage costs. Leaders who have a firm grasp on the policymaking process can advocate for their patients, their organizations, and their communities. This revamped version of the classic textbook originally authored by Beaufort B. Longest, Jr., links policy concepts to practical applications and real healthcare outcomes. It covers formulation, implementation, and modification of health policymaking at both the federal and state levels, while giving readers insight into real-life political results and details of on-the-ground policy decisions. Highlights include:

  • A new chapter on federalism and the role of the states
  • Policy Snapshots at the beginning of each of the book's sections that offer brief, true stories of a significant policy event or an opportunity for students to envision their future selves as health advocates
  • A thoroughly revised and updated chapter on how the courts shape health policy
  • A rich array of new or updated examples drawn from actual policymaking events, in addition to new graphics and sidebars
  • Updated appendixes reorganized to provide easy access to examples germane to the topic at hand
  • An epilogue highlighting federal and state policy challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic of 2020

    • Let author Michael R. Meacham guide you through health policy as a process. With a background in policy, law, healthcare leadership, and academia, he enables students to understand both the big picture and the small, but important, details.

Описание: The coronavirus pandemic has validated the principles of this book-that we need healthcare with no address, helping people where they are and when they need it,' writes Dr. Stephen K. Klasko in Patient No Longer: Why Healthcare Must Deliver the Care Experience That Consumers Want and Expect. 'Telehealth worked. Providing guidance to families worked. Listening worked. Even under our greatest threat since World War II, the principles of using digital medicine to get care out to people turned out to be critical.'Dr. Klasko and Ryan Donohue explore this evolving delivery model in a fascinating look at the history of patient-centric care and the rise of the healthcare consumer as a powerful new voice. In addition to the compelling reasons why consumer-centric care is so crucial, the authors share how leaders can work to build health systems focused on it. They offer actionable ideas for implementation in individual organizations and explore topics such as: The latest research on what matters most to healthcare consumers today; Leadership skills needed to drive patient-centric initiatives; New applications of digital health technology and data; The Picker Institute's Eight Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care; Best practices and case studies from leading organizations.

As healthcare consumers continue to demand the same types of interactions they enjoy in other industries, healthcare organizations must work hard to build frictionless customer experiences that create lasting connections and build genuine loyalty.

This book describes a once-in-an-era transformation in healthcare. Is your organization ready?

Описание: As the US population continues to diversify, the business case for diversity in healthcare leadership is becoming increasingly evident. Racially and ethnically diverse leaders are, however, still significantly underrepresented in today's C-suites. How can healthcare leaders close this gap to enhance the cultural competence of their organizations and improve health equity for all?

In Diversity on the Executive Path, author Diane L. Dixon tackles this pressing issue by sharing the real-life experiences of 12 racially and ethnically diverse hospital and health system CEOs.

Dixon conducted in-depth, face-to-face interviews with this highly accomplished group of healthcare executives to discover what it takes to become a leader at the highest level. From their experiences, you will gain insight and learn practical lessons you can apply to your own career journey or the journeys of those you mentor, coach, or sponsor. The book delves into topics such as:

  • Reflections on race and ethnicity in healthcare leadership
  • The essential role of sponsorship
  • Strategies for maximizing career mobility
  • Navigating a career path when the going gets tough
  • Leadership that makes a difference

    • Each chapter features executive commentary from additional healthcare leaders-practical advice for navigating the executive path-and concludes with questions that invite you to reflect on your own experiences and identify meaningful practices for building success.

The path to the C-suite is not a step ladder; it is a complex journey with many twists and turns. This book presents a unique opportunity to learn from the career trajectories of diverse healthcare executives. May they inspire and enrich your own journey.
