Re-thinking the Angelic Doctor is a major new reassessment of the reception of Thomas Aquinas in the work of the twentieth-century American philosopher W. Norris Clarke. Author Aloysius N. Ezeoba explores the question of whether Clarke was engaged in a "creative retrieval" of Aquinas’ system of thought – with a focus on the human person – or whether Clarke was forging his own path in attemptting to provide a "creative completion". Shedding new light on the workings of two great minds separated by eight centuries, Re-thinking the Angelic Doctor will be of interest to readers who are looking for a timely re-examination of the Aristotelian arguments, especially as they are appropriated by template religious thinkers such as Aquinas. It will also be a valuable resource in graduate courses in medieval and modern philosophy and theology.
Readers concerned with understanding how to appropriate St. Thomas Aquinas’s thinking for the twenty-first century will be greatly assisted in this task by reflecting upon this volume. They will learn much about the last century’s attempts to rethink St. Thomas from the varied positions of neo-Thomists in movements such as Transcendental and Existential Thomism. They will understand the ways in which thinkers such as Marechal and Phelan, were recrafting or, perhaps, abandoning classical Thomism, and how contemporary thinkers, such as Rev. Christopher Cullen, S.J. were countering with arguments defending traditional Thomism. And, importantly, they will confront the thought of one important figure connected with this appropriation: Rev. Norris W. Clarke, S.J., with whom I had contact in many ways as a fellow faculty member and as a popular lecturer. This book is an analytically precise, thoughtful, fruitful exercise in philosophy. It renders appropriate homage to that important twentieth-century Jesuit philosopher and teacher, and prepares the ground for critical appraisal of other various creative appropriations of St. Thomas Aquinas in the past century.

The Jesuit Saint Aloysius Church was built in 1859 on North Capitol Street in Washington, D.C. The lily represents the structure itself that rose up in a swampy area of the Federal City near the Capitol. This book has been referred to as a boutique book containing scholarly text recalling selections of history, reflections, commentary, personal verse and archival materials, all graced with original photographs, fine illustrations and sketches. It also recalls interesting details about the location and times of the building of Saint Aloysius Church just prior to the Civil War.
As a key player in the planning and working committees of renovation of the Church, the author feels it necessary to continue the care and preservation of St. Aloysius in the future because of the cultural value it brings to the City, the Nation and the World. The book underlines the importance of the structure's architect, Benedict Sestini, S.J., and Costantino Brumidi, the "Michelangelo" of the U.S. Captiol, who donated his fine oils on canvas to grace the interior. Their combined creativity and artistry made Saint Aloysius Church a landmark of great value in Washington. The Swampoodle Lily is planted and thrives on the campus of Gonzaga College High School.
Mitochondria are sometimes called the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells, because mitochondria are the site of ATP synthesis in the cell. ATP is the universal energy currency, it provides the power that runs all other life processes. Humans need oxygen to survive because of ATP synthesis in mitochondria. The sugars from our diet are converted to carbon dioxide in mitochondria in a process that requires oxygen. Just like a fire needs oxygen to burn, our mitochondria need oxygen to make ATP. From textbooks and popular literature one can easily get the impression that all mitochondria require oxygen. But that is not the case. There are many groups of organismsm known that make ATP in mitochondria without the help of oxygen. They have preserved biochemical relicts from the early evolution of eukaryotic cells, which took place during times in Earth history when there was hardly any oxygen avaiable, certainly not enough to breathe. How the anaerobic forms of mitochondria work, in which organisms they occur, and how the eukaryotic anaerobes that possess them fit into the larger picture of rising atmospheric oxygen during Earth history are the topic of this book.
Problem-solving in mathematics is the application of theory and concepts to a given situation. Mastering this skill distinguishes the more successful students from their peers.
But to excel in mathematics, practice is key.
Students must practice solving problems; many problems. The problems must be varied, with different parameters, knowns, unknowns and constraints, for students to flexibly exercise their foundational knowledge and build confidence in applying mathematical techniques.
While there are ample resources to find such problems, and the final answers to these problems, many students report difficulty in finding enough illustrative problems, of broad variability, with step-by-step solutions, to guide their thinking.
Without a wide array of worked solutions, a student's ability to self-teach problem-solving is limited. The purpose of this book is to put the considerable power of self-study back into students' hands.
In addition to the basic mathematical concepts and principles, this book provides, in a structured form, over 500 worked examples that students can use, follow and practice upon to improve their mastery of mathematics.
