Описание: Using survey information about characteristics of personal contacts linked with administrative register information on employment status one year later, the author shows that unemployment survey respondents with many employed acquaintances have a higher job finding rate. Settlement in a socially deprived neighbourhood may, therefore, hamper individual labour market outcomes because of lack of employed contacts. The author investigates this hypothesis by exploiting a unique natural experiment that occurred between 1986 and 1998 when refugee immigrants to Denmark were assigned to municipalities quasi-randomly, which successfully addresses the methodological problem of endogenous neighbourhood selection. Taking account of location sorting, living in a socially deprived neighbourhood does not affect labour market outcomes of refugee men. Furthermore, their labor market outcomes are not affected by the overall employment rate of men living in the neighbourhood, but positively affected by the employment rate of non-Western immigrant men and co-national men living in the neighbourhood. This is strong evidence that immigrants find jobs in part through their employed immigrant and co-ethnic contacts in the neighbourhood of residence and that a high quality of contacts increases the individuals employment chances and annual earnings.

Описание: This paper examines the relationship between schizophrenia and employment. While most other studies have used cross-sectional data to estimate this relationship, we use longitudinal register data and show the development in the employment rate of people with schizophrenia 15 years before the first admission to a psychiatric hospital until 10 years after this admission. We find a considerable drop in the employment rate for people with schizophrenia six years before the first hospitalization, and the employment rate stabilizes at 18 % after the first admission. As family and neighbourhood environment can be important factors in the development of mental illnesses and labour market outcomes, we use sibling fixed effects to estimate the relationship between schizophrenia and employment. The difference in the employment rate in 2007 for the siblings with and without schizophrenia is estimated at 67 %. This difference is reduced to 56 % when we include control variables such as marital status, educational achievement and work experience but remain unchanged when we apply a sibling fixed effect approach which controls for unobserved family specific characteristics that the siblings share.

Yet, while they undeniably opened doors for the next generations of educated women, sexist hiring practices, assumptions about women's aptitudes as reporters, and more subtle gender biases continued to saturate the industry in the decades that followed. Gender, Generation, and Journalism in France, 1910–1940 investigates the careers and written work of ten women who regularly reported in the national, Paris-based dailies. Addressing the role of mentorship, family connections, gendered behaviours, reporting styles, and subject matter, Mary Lynn Stewart debunks lingering essentialist notions about women's entry into journalism. She shows that struggling newspapers, attempting to reverse declining circulation, hired women to cover subjects that expanded to include international relations, colonial conflicts, trials, local politics, and social problems. Through content analysis, deixis, and systematic comparisons of several women and men reporting on the same or different events, she further queries claims about a feminine style, finding more similarities than differences between masculine and feminine reporting. Documenting the persistence of gender discrimination in the hiring, assigning, and assessment of women reporters in the French daily press, Gender, Generation, and Journalism in France, 1910–1940 demonstrates that, through the support of their female colleagues, women managed to succeed despite a variety of challenges.
