One caption even called the teachers "pretty enough to send dad to school with junior." Envisioned as shining examples of "proper" femininity, female educators were expected to produce a new generation of housewives for a strong democratic nation. Democracy`s Angels is a daring exploration of the limitations of that vision, which ultimately confined women to teaching a model of citizenship that privileged masculinity and reduced women`s authority. In an analytical tour-de-force, Kristina Llewellyn unravels the ideological underpinnings of democracy as the objective for postwar education. Schools were charged with producing rational, autonomous, politically engaged citizens, but women were not associated with these qualities. Claims to scholarly knowledge, professional autonomy, and administrative positions were reserved for male teachers. Using rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship and extensive interviews with former teachers, Llewellyn reveals the ways in which women negotiated and even found opportunities within these troubling limitations. An unflinching look at the difficult realities of women`s work experiences in postwar Canada, Democracy`s Angels illustrates the intrinsic connections between gender, education, and democracy.
Revives the overlooked stories of pioneering women aviators, who are also featured in the forthcoming documentary film Coming Home: Fight for a Legacy
During World War II, all branches of the military had women's auxiliaries. Only the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, however, was made up entirely of women who undertook dangerous missions more commonly associated with and desired by men. Within military hierarchies, the World War II pilot was perceived as the most dashing and desirable of servicemen. "Flyboys" were the daring elite of the United States military. More than the WACs (Army), WAVES (Navy), SPARS (Coast Guard), or Women Marines, the WASPs directly challenged these assumptions of male supremacy in wartime culture. WASPs flew the fastest fighter planes and heaviest bombers; they test-piloted experimental models and worked in the development of weapons systems. Yet the WASPs were the only women's auxiliary within the armed services of World War II that was not militarized. In Clipped Wings, Molly Merryman draws upon military documents—many of which weren’t declassified until the 1990s—congressional records, and interviews with the women who served as WASPs during World War II to trace the history of the over one thousand pilots who served their country as the first women to fly military planes. She examines the social pressures that culminated in their disbandment in 1944—even though a wartime need for their services still existed—and documents their struggles and eventual success, in 1977, to gain military status and receive veterans’ benefits. In the preface to this reissued edition, Merryman reflects on the changes in women’s aviation in the past twenty years, as NASA’s new Artemis program promises to land the first female astronaut on the moon and African American and lesbian women are among the newest pilot recruits. Updating the story of the WASPs, Merryman reveals that even in the past few years there have been more battles for them to fight and more national recognition for them to receive. At its heart, the story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots is not about war or planes; it is a story about persistence and extraordinary achievement. These accomplished women pilots did more than break the barriers of flight; they established a model for equality.

Описание: Take a few trips with the human race's only intra-star-system taxi driver as he ferries a varying collection of interstellar celebrities around and between the stars you see in the night sky: Sirius, Tau Ceti, Keid, Beta Hydri, Tabit and ultimately Deneb. The highlights include skiing down a mountain whose highest peak pokes out into space above the atmosphere, an expedition to hunt the apex predator in the most dangerous jungle in the known universe, a variety of ruins abandoned by nonhuman civilizations millions of years ago, and the most expensive birthday present ever conceived by the human mind. Who built these abandoned cities, and how did they become embroiled in a far distant space war which shattered planetoids, casually flung inhabited planets to a distant frozen orbit, and melted deep craters into and through the planetary crust? Follow a trail that starts at Saturn's moon Titan and leads finally to a ruined city whose inhabitants ruled this sector of a now-forgotten galactic empire. In the city, there remains behind a weapon, still functioning, that is capable of unimaginable destruction. This technology was once used against Earth and could be again--this time by pirates of the future who have already harnessed alien technology for their own ends. The question now is: How can an intergalactic taxi driver and an Oxford professor--with the help of a grumpy but brilliant artificial intelligence entity--prevent the pirates from securing the weapon and enslaving the human race?

Описание: The provision of public services -- such as health care, education, sanitation and criminal justice -- is a key task for government. People care about public services and depend on them being delivered well. Public services provide the most common interface between people and the state, and their functioning shapes peoples sense of trust in and expectations of government. At a national level, public services underpin human welfare and economic growth and need to be delivered with integrity, centred around citizens, and responsive to their needs, particularly the needs of the most vulnerable. Promoting greater transparency and enabling ordinary citizens to assess the quality, adequacy and effectiveness of basic services, to voice their needs and preferences and to become involved in innovation offers an opportunity to enable better use of public funds, and improve service delivery. It is also recognised that urban service delivery is an integral part of urban development and enables cities to have economies of scale and economies of settlements. As a result, urban policies, institutional arrangements and initiatives have developed a frame-work of urban infrastructure to produce and deliver urban services to a cross-section of consumers. The citizen focus on services has involved three main factors namely efficiency, resource mobilisation and equity. However, the gap in the normative base of urban services has significantly increased over a period of time across the countries with a particular reference to developing economies. At the same time innovative methods for alternative institutional arrangements, new patterns of financing covering marked borrowings, PPP and community mobilisation have also emerged and recognised by international community. Public Service Provision and Urban Development encompasses a number of major themes related to the analysis of public services. The text evaluates sustainability in urban centres from a social, economic, and environmental perspective. It shows how cities can improve and sustain housing, land use, business activity, and infrastructure. This book will be of great interest not only to political scientists but also to geographers and to sociologists or for those related with community organisations, non-profit advocacy groups, and government sustainability agencies.

Описание: This publication provides updates on social protection indicators for 13 Pacific developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank. It presents an analysis of 2015 data on social protection programs, particularly the substantial progress in expenditure and benefit size between 2009 and 2015. Yet, spending favored the nonpoor over the poor, and the gap in spending on men and on women widened. The Social Protection Index—now the Social Protection Indicator—was developed by ADB and its partners as the first comprehensive and quantitative measure of social protection systems in Asia and the Pacific.

Описание: The US Forest Service was established in 1905 and for the following 60-70 years was staffed primarily by men engaged in the production and harvest of timber. Social and economic changes that emerged from the civil rights and environmental movements of the 1960s and 1970s, however, changed the scope and priorities of the service and created opportunities for women to find employment within the agency. Here, career Forest Service employee Lauren Turner offers a brief history of the agency and then profiles the careers of 42 women who have spent most or all of their working lives in that agency. A final chapter provides a frank review of the collective challenges, rewards, and accomplishments of women who have been employed by the Forest Service since the early 1970s. This review is the first of its kind involving women in the Forest Service and, as such, it adds a rich layer to the history of both the agency and that of modern women. In addition, it serves as a beacon to attract and inform young women of today who might themselves be interested in the outdoor, environmentally important work that is undertaken by the Forest Service.

Описание: Specialized public resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) are increasingly common and diverse--from protection order courts and dedicated domestic violence units in police precincts to a vast network of community-based emergency shelters and counseling services. Yet little consensus exists regarding which resources actually work to reduce violence and help survivors lead the lives they would like to live. This book is an account of these resources and IPV survivors' experiences with them in three communities in the United States.Through detailed observations of services such as court procedures, public benefits processes, and community-based IPV programs as well as in-depth interviews with dozens of IPV survivors and practitioners, Shoener describes how our current institutional response to IPV is often not useful--and sometimes quite harmful--for IPV survivors with the least material, social, and cultural capital to spare. For these women, as the interviews vividly record, IPV has long-term economic and social consequences, disrupting career paths and creating social isolation.
